Hi, I'm trying to find a book I read about 5 years ago. I do not know when it was published, but it was fairly modern with mentions of smartphones and email. A woman and her son were trying to run away from her abusive husband, who was in the Navy. There was a Navy Seal who reported to him, and he saw her sitting in the waiting room because she wasn't allowed to drive home without her husband. The Seal had met her before, and I think helped her change a tire. She took the opportunity to beg him for help. There was a hike in a park with her son's school and it was their last chance to slip away. He refused to help and told her to go to a shelter, but it ate at him and he ended up canoeing up to her and the kid as they lagged behind the group. They hopped in the canoe and he took them to his farm, which was run down. I think it was his stepfather's and there was a side plot about white supremacists. The kid learned to carve while there. They left to go to her birth mom's house (she was adopted and her husband didn't know she'd found her birth mom). The husband of course tracked them down, but the Seal saved them, etc. Those are the details I am absolutely sure about.

I've been looking for it for a bit, but can't find it. Any help would be appreciated.
