Tamahome | 7222 comments Wow, Roberservations from Youtube talks about Netflix having new movies they made come out every week of 2021. The Queen's Gambit was a huge success. Are the movie studios becoming obsolete? What do you think, Post-Geek Singularity? NETFLIX IS ON FIRE RIGHT NOW! ROBSERVATIONS Season Three #601

By the way, I think a 7 episode miniseries is the perfect way to adapt a novel, especially a shorter one.

It's debatable whether 1 a week is a good thing or a bad thing given the low rate of good Netflix original movies.

For every "The Queen's Gambit" there are several "The Midnight Sky". Sorting through the garbage is hard enough as it is.

It might be better if they spent 4 times as much money to make 1 really good movie/TV series a month.

This applies to every studio by the way.

Tamahome | 7222 comments It seems like a streaming service can take more risks and allow creative control more than a big movie studio can though.

Trike | 11199 comments I do wish they’d do a better job of telling us what’s new. I’ve been hearing this “new movie a week” for months now, but other than Outside the Wire and Midnight Sky, I have no idea what they are. Are series like Queen’s Gambit and Bridgestone part of that, or is it just feature length films?

Edit -> autocorrect turns “Bridgerton” into “Bridgestone”. :|

Tamahome | 7222 comments I usually just look at the top 10. I wish Amazon had something like that. I also like the "screensaver" that comes on when you idle with pictures of different movies and series.

Geez I hope the US Top 10 on Netflix is better than the Oz Top 10.

I find it no guarantee of quality. Anything new or featured, will instantly jump high inside the Top 10

I would like to see a better rating system and a Top 10 based on ratings for the last week.

I find recommendations from friends, forums like this and podcasts I trust, like Cordkillers (Tom's show with Brian Brushwood) are best for me finding new content to watch rather than what Netflix tries to push or their Top 10 which is broken.

Tamahome | 7222 comments I use rotten tomatoes too, and watch the trailer. Sometimes I'll go for a lower rated movie anyway.

Trike | 11199 comments Here’s the official film slate. A few dates given in the descriptions. Series like Queen’s Gambit and Bridgerton aren’t part of it.

Tamahome | 7222 comments Nice. Yeah, one has Gale Godot and Dwayne Johnson. And Halle Berry directs one for the first time.

Rick The best way to sort through stuff is Just Watch. For example, here's all movies on Netflix with an IMDB rating of 7.3 or better, sorted by release year.

https://www.justwatch.com/us/provider...

You can filter by genre, etc too. Sub to more than one service? I do. Here's the same criteria, but for Netflix, Prime and HBO Max:

https://www.justwatch.com/us/movies?p...

But maybe you want to hike the bar to a rating of 8. Even then, you get 1052 choices. How about narrowing by filter. Here's all movies 8 or better on this 3 services but only the SFF titles, sorted by rating (highest first):

Trike | 11199 comments Space Sweepers is okay. Pretty much just borrows the plot of River Tam’s arc from Serenity.

Tamahome | 7222 comments I liked the beginning the most when they were just happy go lucky space cleaners. I was confused by what happened to the other daughter. I watched some "ending explained" video, but he just read the press release. The comments helped clear it up though. Often in movies or anime, the visuals are great but the writing isn't so great. I think I really like novels adapted to a miniseries, like The Queen's Gambit.
