SOLVED. YA (maybe) super post-apocalyptic book about a teen transported centuries(?) into the future and has to make a new life for himself

My english teacher in 7th grade read this book aloud to us in 2007-2008ish. I don't remember a whole lot except that the MC was somehow put way in the future (like at the end of Time Machine far in the future). He was enslaved I think and had to learn the new language that I'm pretty sure was the kind where they click their tongues. Unable to get home, he had to make a new life for himself in the future. I think he lived in the desert.
Spoiler:
He gets a wife whose name I'm pretty sure is similar to Megan but maybe has a "k" instead of "g" in it? He eventually makes it home to his own time, just as spontaneously as he appeared in the future. As an adult, he became a doctor but I don't think he ever remarried? The last few lines were about him trying to get back to his wife I think?
