Matriarch is a fading actress. Her husband is now a celebrity academic who has now become a successful author with dark secret. They have three grown up children, two girls and one boy. The family have for many years taken a family holiday to a villa complex in Portugal. In 2019 the father has died and the family return to Portugal as a way of saying farewell. One of the daughters, whose husband was left behind in UK and subsequently dies, takes along a young Canadian girl to nanny for her young daughter. As the plot unwinds the various family members recollect events that led to the disappearance of a young toddler of one of the children back in 2001. It is revealed that the father who had died had sexually abused his children and the missing toddler turns out to be the Canadian nanny who had been adopted by a male gay couple when a child.
