At first I thought he may have fell for Eliza while they were both grieving over her husband, Ted. But I think the whole thing was just comfort, not romance.
I actually think he had stronger feelings for Eliza. She definitely didn’t for him or she wouldn’t have stayed away for over 20 years. I think Lincoln was feeling like she was the one that got away.
However! His feelings may have been a bit convoluted...a little guilt, a little attraction and a lot of loneliness because his own marriage wasn’t working.

I thought the same, Jonetta. He felt so guilty over that kiss, which tells us how honorable he really was/is.
I don't think he had any real romantic feelings for her. He felt guilty over Ted's death and transferred this on to Eliza.
I agree with you Jonetta. He had feelings for Eliza but she didn't reciprocate those feelings. I think she recognized that she could take advantage and left to protect them both.
