SOLVED. YA Fantasy lite-magic series. Set at a school for magical children in a semi-realistic world with a variety of strange powers. Read around 2005-2008.

1. Genre and Plot Details: Main character can travel into and see the time and place a photograph was taken. Starts living with his family who all have powers, such as blowing out lightbulbs, channel electricity, etc. Goes to a boarding school where other kids can do similar things, such as shapeshift, channel ancestors, and mind control. The MC's father is missing.

2. Year: I believe I read these around elementary school, so maybe around '05-'08? I'm pretty sure the books were pretty dog eared by the time I got them out of my library, so they may date back to the very early 2000's.
