I joined PBT on Shelfari right after it started. I remember the first tag (Historical Fiction), which got me WAY out of my reading comfort zone, but the book I chose ended up being one of my favorites of all time. And I love historical fiction now. The next few months I read lots of books that I thought I'd never read (even one tagged dragons...lol).

If anyone wants to check the date you joined GR, go to your Profile and look under Activity (3rd line down) and it will give the month and year.To check on the date you joined PBT, go to the Group Home, click on My Group Comments and the date will be at the top of the page on the left. Of course, if you were on Shelfari before, I don't think those dates come over...

Yes! It's harder if you joined PBT on Shelari, though :)

I think my first month was November 2008. The tag was poetry and I read The Panther and the Lash, Eric Carle's Dragons, Dragons, and Eric Carle's Animals Animals.

I don't even remember my first tag with pbt, so I am impressed when people do. Thankfully I remember when I joined. However, I ought to go look that one up.

Joined at the end of that month, so I did join IN that month, but it was too close to the end of the month, so didn't read for it.
I joined when the tag was France, but am not sure if I read for that tag or started with Family Relationships. I had to look this up to find it.
It's been a little over 2 years for me, and it's given me a wonderful new focus following an upheaval in my life. I think my first or second tag was Literary Fiction.
I joined PBT back in Shelfari near the end of August 2008 - the tag was poetry. So I just passed my 12th anniversary last August and have been a member for 12 1/2 years. Became an admin January 2019, so I just passed my 2nd anniversary as an admin.
Oh, I had so much fun reading through all the posts about people's first tags! And I can't believe how long it has been. I started PBT when my son was 12, and now he's 25. How is that possible?I was inspired initially by a moms group on Shelfari. All the mothers there were just enjoying talking about books, but not one specific book at a time nor one specific genre. But it was so chaotic. I wanted an active group, like the moms group, but one that didn't restrict everyone to reading the same book, but still had a structure. I really didn't even know if anyone would join my group . . .and here we are!
Moving to Goodreads was definitely the scariest moment. Not every Shelfarian thought it was the best move . . .amazingly we survived and thanks to you all, thrived.
Still makes me so happy to interact with all the passionate readers we have here.

I echo the sentiment - it's the reason PBT is the only social media group I am really active with!

It’s so cool to see a GoodReads book group with such tremendous continuity and community! And then for one to predate GoodReads is even cooler!
Jenny wrote: "I must be weird - most of you have planned your journey and fitting the books around where you want to go for Fly the PBT Skies. Whilst I am letting my books tell me where to go each month!"That is the way I am doing it also.
Only 1 year with PBT but it has been a pleasure being part of the community. I joined GR in 2009 but never discovered the groups until I found the PopSugar challenge a couple of years ago. I had never heard of Shelfari until the this group. So... am I the only one that has been crying my eyes out with these mental health books? They are killing me. So good but so emotional. I'm going to attempt to try more comedic family dramas in February and fingers crossed for a less emotional topic in March! Like werewolves :)
It seems to me there is a huge overlap between Mental Health and Family Drama! So many mental health issues come from and/or affect families.
Good suggestion Amy but I've already read that one. Robin, I definitely agree on that I've seen much overlap. Quite of my mental health reads definitely affected the families.
Amy wrote: "Family drama will keep you crying I think. Time for Crazy Rich Asians?"That's my pick for family drama. And I read a humourous look at mental health in January with "Furiously Happy" by Jenny Lawson.
Jen K wrote: "So... am I the only one that has been crying my eyes out with these mental health books? They are killing me. So good but so emotional. I'm goi..."FIRST, remember that for the monthly tag the book does NOT have to have tag already, as long as you think it fits and feel that you can justify it. The exact tag is needed only for the special challenge games ... like Fly the Skies
SO depending on whether you need something that also meets Fly the Skies you might want to try ...
The Spellman Files (or one of the sequels if you've already read this one) - 6 people tagged it on pg 2
The Boston Girl - 11 people tagged it on pg 2
Girl Waits with Gun - only 3 people have tagged it
Bittersweet - 4 people tagged it
Serving Crazy with Curry - does NOT have the tag, though it is tagged both "family" and "drama" and I think it would fit.

Thanks BC! I will definitely check these out!
Nicole R wrote: "I am pretty sure that is the one that is being made into a Netflix series, Joi!"That may have something to do with my decision ;)
Newbie here. Planning on reading: A Man by Keiichirō Hirano. I have a lot of family drama books on my list including but not limited to:With the Fire on High, The Darkling Bride, and Conjure Women.
