Jade Zahreddine | 8 comments Read it the 90s for sure. It could have been part of an anthology in an English textbook. The women lived together, they may have been elderly sisters. There is some presumably evil entity that exists in part of the house.

One day they leave some door unsecured and the entity invades more parts of the house before they seal it off. They reference parts of the house they cannot go into anymore because it has been taken over. They mention things they have to live without, like eye glasses or knitting needles that were left in the part of the house they had to suddenly abandon. It ends with them having to quickly leave the house when the entity gets out again.

They lock the door because it wouldn't do for "some poor thief to break in and get themselves killed."
