Jet Townsend | 4 comments Read this between 1975 and 1985, checked out a copy from the local parish library, adult fiction section, but they claim (over the phone) that they have purged checkout records from that time. Hardback book with a dust jacket.

Plot: guy with a computer and a modem discovers he can break in to banks/stores and steal money/goods. Buys a van (RV?) and travels around the country as a sort of Robin Hood, breaking in to banks for money to pay for his travels. This was *not* science fiction, the technology was explained in very lay terms. He met his wife/gf while on his travels. No memory of how the book ends. I remember it being more of a techno-savvy hippie-turned-Robin-Hood book than anything else.

I was in an experimental computer programming class in Jr. High and sold Commodore 64s at a store when I was in high school, so I knew about "phreaking" and "hacking". My memory is these words were not used in the book.

Jet, does he give to the poor like Robin Hood?

I added some details to the header/topic title. You can update it by clicking the small "edit" link after the header. This only works on the full Desktop website - not the Mobile website or app. (On the Mobile website, click the "Desktop version" link at the bottom of the page.)

Jet Townsend | 4 comments Thanks for the cleanup, this is my first time doing a search.

I don't remember if he gives to the poor or is just a well-meaning grifter who steals from "the man". I *think* part of the plot was him living in a van so tracing the model calls would just lead to RV parks and public phones.

You're welcome. Is this set in the U.S.?

Jet Townsend | 4 comments Yes, set in the United States. I checked it out from a Parish library in Louisiana, so I assume it was published in the US.

Jet Townsend | 4 comments Maybe! This Kirkus review sounds a bit like the book I read in high school in the early 80s: https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-re...
