SOLVED. YA book. Girl is taking acting/ drama classes possibly at summer camp. One character is on stage pretending to talk on phone so believably other tweens are in awe. 1970's or 1980's book. [s]

1970' or 1980's book. There is a tween that is either taking acting classes or summer camp acting classes. One of the characters is on the stage who is given the assignment to pretend to talk on the phone, she is twirls the phone cord in her finger and does it so believably it leaves the other tweens in the audience in awe.

Any leads on books with summer camps or day camps or summer vacations would be appreciated.

that's it..that's all I remember I have been hunting on the internet for almost 4 years and I am starting to believe that I imagined that this book from my childhood doesn't exist. If anyone remembers anything I will forever be in your debt.

I read it when I was a kid - in the 1980's but I think it might have taken place during the 1970's or 1908's...I just remember the description of the old style phones that were hung on the wall with long cords back in the day....

Might also check the Middle Grade Summer Themed Books list, although most of those titles are newer.

How sure are you that it was a sleepaway camp or day camp vs. just regular acting classes?

There's a scene in New Girl where the kids (in a summer acting class) are asked to act out pantomimes. I don't remember a phone cord specifically, though...

I have to be honest I have been looking for so long and my teenage years are a long time ago that I am afraid that its all my imagination at this point. This was sort of my last shot to see if this book existed. Its just driving me nuts trying to find it.

I know that feeling :) The "new girl" of the title is the one who's best at acting out the pantomimes and impresses the other kids, so I think there's a chance this is your book!
