Jenny | 2346 comments Hello Team Gremlins!

I am Jenny, from Phoenix, AZ, where it is actually raining right now as I type. It is notable, as I have pretty much forgotten what rain sounds, smells and feels like. I may pause this to go jump in a puddle.
Anyway, I am, like the rest of you I suspect, a book nut. I am also a rabid Green Bay Packers fan, a science nerd, a political junkie (I will not bore you with politics on this thread, but I will likely not be available on Wednesday as I will be watching the inauguration), and the roommate of two absolutely wonderful and brilliant kitty-cats. They made me write that.

If you found your way to this challenge, you have either played before, or heard that it is the gateway drug to becoming addicted to challenges. Either way, welcome!

This is a fun challenge, and it is even more fun when we all chat like crazy people. If you haven't played before, remember that there are no stupid questions. It doesn't take long to learn the game, and usually, anything you want to read will work somehow.

I will have links to our team's working spreadsheet, and links to the rules, and anything else we need soon, in message 6.

Jenny | 2346 comments Hi everyone!
Welcome again, it has been a crazy day at work, and I am not quite done yet, so I will stop back here in a couple of hours to see who has dropped by to say hello, and answer any questions that come up.

Please introduce yourselves however you want to.

message 11: by Alla (new)

Alla (allaskarp) | 364 comments Hi everyone!
I´m Alla and I come from Iceland.
This is my second time playing. Played for the first time last year and loved it!! Looking forward to play with you all and feel free to add me as a friend if you want to :)

message 12: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Hi Alla, this will be fun, I'm sure.

Can you do me a favor and see if I have the link to the spreadsheet set up right? No one but me has seen it yet, and I'm not sure if I have it set to public or private.

Message 6 Working Gremlins.

Thank you!!!!

message 13: by Dafna (new)

Dafna | 14 comments HI
I am Dafna. This is my first time participating and I feel a bit lost but also curious and interested to see how this goes and hope it will be fun. Do we each choose a card to correspond to a book we intend to read? how do the cards get assigned? Thanks for clarifying and looking forward to doing this challenge with all of you.

message 14: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Hi Dafna!
I should be working, but I keep sneaking over to the computer.
I will explain everything I can when I get home from work, and after i feed my two kitties. Priorities and all.

message 15: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Ok, I am home now, and dinner is in the oven.
We have been given our hand for February, and I have made a working spreadsheet that we can use to grab cards for books.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

If one of you can check the link above for me to make sure I didn't leave it on private, I would appreciate it.

Once you are there, you can claim cards. Just put the book title, find your name in the drop down menu, and write why it works, etc. The columns all have headers that make it pretty easy.

If any of you are not comfortable using Google spreadsheet, or can't access it easily, I can set up a books read thread, and you can list your books there for me to put on the spreadsheet later.

I will be near the computer for several hours this evening, so ask as many questions as you like!!!!!!

message 16: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Sue (misscimi) | 28 comments Hi! I’m Amanda! Nice to meet everyone! The spreadsheet says I have to request access.

message 17: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Thanks. Let's see if I can fix that!

And Hello!

message 19: by Dafna (new)

Dafna | 14 comments Hi Jen,

yes it says view only need to request access to edit. Do we just claim one card at a time? from the first hand?
If I understand the rules 3 is anything with the letter H? I would like to take a 3 from the first hand and read get a life chole Brown by Talia Hibbert (The H :) ). I can add it once you fix the spread sheet. let me know I f I seem to be understanding the rules or if it is different then what I stated above. I assume once I finish a book I claim another card? thanks!

message 20: by Dafna (new)

Dafna | 14 comments sorry I meant to say Jenny :)

message 21: by Dafna (new)

Dafna | 14 comments the new link says you need access as well and need to request access

message 22: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I swear I will figure it out.

message 23: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I go by Jen as well, no worries.
You can claim as many cards as you want. We have 14 hands to finish in the first month, so you don't have to start at the top.

Yes, you are understanding the way to find a book for a card.
3 would work for an H in the title, or the author's first or last name, or a character in the story, or for the 3rd in a series, or a three in the title, or if the story took place in a town called Harrington, for example. There are a lot of ways to cover a card, so you can read pretty much anything and make it fit somewhere.

message 24: by Dafna (new)

Dafna | 14 comments Thanks for explaining! I thought we had to finish the first hand before we move to the second hand etc. one more question...Do we need to start reading it after February 1 or can it be something we started reading this month but we finish in February?

message 25: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments You have to wait until the game starts for the book to count.

I have asked a friend for help to solve the spreadsheet thing. Sorry I wasn't all prepared!

message 26: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I think it works now!!!!

(maybe)

message 27: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 161 comments Hi everyone! My name is Ilsen and this is my second time playing! I was on Team Void Tartlet last year!

Honestly I really like this challenge because you can honestly read anything and it’s just fun to try to complete all the hands as a team. How it worked for me last year was that we just submitted everything in the thread and then our captain would just try to fit it in onto whatever fits. I’m fine with either or though, so if you want us to put it in ourselves, I’m good with that.

We can go in whatever hand order but we would need to finish the hands in order if we wants to get the points for it. Like for example, we can’t get points for Hand 5 if we didn’t complete all the other four by the end of the month, etc.

As far as the cards being claimed, the only thing we have to reserve ahead of time is the color cards because those are very specific. So if anyone is already doing their TBRs for February, maybe we can figure out who are going to have the color cards and stuff.

Sorry I’m not the captain or anything but I’m just really excited to do this challenge! I hope I can do better than last year with more reads! Also, we should all friend each other so it would be easier for the Reverse prompt, which is someone in our group who has read the book! Hope you are all having a lovely night!

message 28: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Hi Ilsen!!!
Explain anything you want. I am not a proprietary captain. I will take all the help anyone wants to give.

As soon as we get our full team checking in, we can decide whether to add a book read thread. I don't mind setting it up, and filling things in for whoever wants to go that way.

For my sanity, and to keep the wrath of the mods at bay (teehee), as long as everyone marks their books as read, and preferably has them on their Uno shelf, then I am a happy girl.

As far as reserving cards, feel free to grab as many as you want on the spreadsheet. We can juggle things around towards the end of the month to make them all fit.

The fun really starts when the mods send out the mini challenges towards the middle of the month. By then, hopefully we will have gotten to know each other a bit, as sometimes the minis need some cooperation and brainstorming.

Personally, I love it when someone reads a brilliant book, and tells the team about it. I have been inspired to read a bunch of books I never would have picked up otherwise.

message 29: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments By the way, have you all seen Gremlins?

message 30: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Should we have a watch party? I just checked, and it is on HBO Max, and it is $3.99 on Amazon, YouTube, Vudu, and a couple of others. In the US at least. I never know how the streaming differs between countries with copyright issues and all.

message 31: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 161 comments I have seen Gremlins! I watched it with my now ex boyfriend a couple years back and I thought it was creepy but cute at the same time! I definitely would love a watch party, that would be so fun!

I’m also very excited for the mini challenges because they really are team based and it’s fun to do! I will try to include my thoughts on the book if anyone is interested in it so we can all talk about books together!

I might make a shelf separate for all the specific color cards reads I want to get to!! It’s not a definite one but like a TBR for it just to keep track of it! But maybe later because I’ve been procrastinating on homework. XD

message 32: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Pfft. Homework.
Although, if you do it all now, you won't have any to do during the challenge, right? I haven't been in school in a while, but I am sure that's how it works.

message 33: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Well, I have an early morning tomorrow, so I am heading to bed.
Hopefully, we will have more check ins by the morning.

Night all!

message 34: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 303 comments Hi everyone,

Excited to be playing in Team Gremlins!
I read a wide variety of genres and seem to have accumulated a large backlog of books around the house (opps- not sorry). I'm hoping that the challenge will help me clear some of my book shelves. I am also the servant of 2 furry roommates, who like to sit on books when I am trying to read.

Looking forward to playing with you all :)

Also I may have a book in mind for 6 Red, I'll try putting in the spreadsheet in a bit (trying to wake up and get ready for work)!

message 35: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 303 comments I haven't seen Gremlins in a long time but up for a watch party for sure! Not sure on our time zones right now :)

message 36: by Alla (new)

Alla (allaskarp) | 364 comments I´ve seen Gremlins, way, way back. Even had the stuffed animal that I kept on my bed when I was a kid :)

message 37: by Rachael (new)

Rachael Hewison (rachhewison) | 459 comments Hello hello, I'm Rachael and I'm from England. I've done the Uno challenge for quite a few years now and really enjoy it. I enjoy seeing what other people read and pick up any recommendations. I'm happy to read any genre but leaning more towards crime/thrillers at the moment.

message 38: by Nicole B (new)

Nicole B | 119 comments Hi, I'm Nicole and have been looking forward to this challenge! I'm from the UK and love reading just about anything. though I'll admit to leaning towards fantasy stuff lol. I've got a few reds that I'll have a look at and see if any fit what we have ;)

message 39: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Morning all!
I think I finally got my brain cells working together to make the spreadsheet accessible and editable by all. Clearly I just needed to sleep on it. And have coffee. And not be distracted by watching Lin Manuel Miranda recite poetry to me on the tv.
So, welcome all, and start grabbing cards if you want!

message 40: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Sue (misscimi) | 28 comments Question:
If I read As the Shadow Rises (The Age of Darkness, #2) by Katy Rose Pool for 2 Red will it count as 2nd in a series if the 3rd book hasn't come out yet? But it is going to release later in the year?

message 41: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Yes it will.

message 42: by Angela (new)

Angela | 655 comments Hi all!

I am Angela from Tennessee! This is my third year playing Uno and I absolutely love it. Sorry for the late response but like Jenny, I spent 12 hours yesterday watching the inauguration footage. :)

I was stoked to see that I was on team Gremlins as I am an 80's baby and of course this reminds me of my childhood. Thinking back, I can't believe my parents let me watch this. :)

I look forward to playing with you all this year.

message 43: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Welcome to Gremlins!
I am trying to remember the rules...
Don't feed us after midnight? Or is it no water? I need to see that movie again. I saw it when it came out, but not since then.

message 44: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Sue (misscimi) | 28 comments Does anyone remember the sequel? With the female gremlin and the one that talks, who is wearing a suit if I am remembering correctly?

message 45: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I think I just saw the preview of that one. I did not see the movie.
I anyone else old enough to remember how every male on the planet wanted to date Phoebe Cates after Gremlins came out?

message 46: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 161 comments There’s a sequel???

message 47: by Angela (last edited Jan 21, 2021 08:20AM) (new)

Angela | 655 comments I just did a sweep of my bookshelves and wanted to run these past you guys before I put them on the spreadsheet. I will warn you now that I tend to be a tad bit color blind.

9 Yellow - The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai
8 Red - Full Tilt (Full Tilt, #1) by Emma Scott - does this have enough red to count?
2 Blue - She's Faking It by Kristin Rockaway

message 48: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I'd say no on the Full Tilt one, as there is a lot of orange and pink. Yes on the others.

Do you all know how the Wild Draw 4 cards work?
We can repeat color cards once each with a WD4 card. It does not need to be in the same hand. So, if you grab a WD4 card, make sure no one has already duplicated the color card you want to use.

If I am telling you guys stuff that you already know, just tell me to shut up.

message 49: by Angela (new)

Angela Snyder | 31 comments HI
I'm Angela S from Carlisle, PA. As an 80s kid, I am all too familiar w/the Gremlins! We had the "videotape" movie - for those young'en's out there, that is a VCR tape.
Yes, the rules are:
1. Don't ever get them wet.
2. Whatever you do, do not feed them after midnight.

Oh right, UNO! I am new to this game so I will be watching how this all plays out trying to get the hang of it.

Does John Grisham's new release, "A Time For Mercy" count for anything?

message 50: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Hi Angela!
The Grisham book will work for a 2 card (T in title), as you can ignore the articles a, an, the. There may be characters with the right letters for other cards as well, but you may not find those out until you read it.

Welcome to Uno!
