Jenny | 2346 comments Morning all.
The countdown to the beginning of the next round and the end of this one is updated in message 6 of this thread. We have five days and a few hours left.

message 402: by Alla (new)

Alla (allaskarp) | 364 comments I´m constantly listening to books; while doing housework, in front of the tv while knitting, while cooking, folding laundry, taking walks...just ALL THE TIME! lol!

message 403: by Angela (new)

Angela | 655 comments I actually listened to 3 audio books this month which never happens! It made me realize that I can do non-fiction audio books but still cannot get through fiction.

message 404: by Alla (new)

Alla (allaskarp) | 364 comments Angela wrote: "I actually listened to 3 audio books this month which never happens! It made me realize that I can do non-fiction audio books but still cannot get through fiction."

I find it very important though that they are well narrated. A badly narrated book I can not listen to at all.

message 405: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Yeah. Audible recorded one of the books from my favorite mystery series of all time, not the first book, weirdly, and the narrator sounded so bored, that I got angry at the whole thing. I think everyone else must have as well, as there have been no more recordings of that series, at least that I am aware of.

message 406: by Angela (new)

Angela | 655 comments Do you have favorite narrators or books to share with those of us who are on the struggle bus with audio books?

message 407: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Sue (misscimi) | 28 comments I finished How to Catch a Queen and The Glass Hotel

Jenny | 2346 comments Angela wrote: "Do you have favorite narrators or books to share with those of us who are on the struggle bus with audio books?"

I do. I will make a list of goodies when I get a chance, maybe later today.

message 409: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Amanda wrote: "I finished How to Catch a Queen and The Glass Hotel"

How was The Glass Hotel? I have been thinking about getting that one.

message 410: by Angela (new)

Angela | 655 comments I will be finished with both of my remaining books by tomorrow. Is there anything you want me to pick up?

If we start a book this week but finish after March 1st can we count it for our March cards?

message 411: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Sue (misscimi) | 28 comments Jenny wrote: "Amanda wrote: "I finished How to Catch a Queen and The Glass Hotel"

Hated pretty much all of it, tbh.

message 412: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Well, that's too bad, I will leave it for now.

Angela, yes, any book you started after Feb 1 will count for any month.

message 413: by phez (new)

phez (phezweb) Hey I took off “The Dilemma”— hand 6, zero card! So any stand alone novel will work.

Time got away from me/- I’ll save this one for March!

Thanks! Sorry about that :(

message 414: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments No problem, Phez!
We will be fine.

message 415: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Asking for opinions here.
Yellow or orange?
The Beauty of Your Face by Sahar Mustafah
Yellow or blue, or not enough of either?
The Lost Book of Adana Moreau by Michael Zapata

message 416: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 161 comments The first one is orange and the second one is more of a yellow cover with some blue.

message 417: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments A couple of spreadsheet bits-

If you see an asterisk by your name on the Draw 2 hands, it is so the book count coincides to the actual books read on the members tab.

On hands 5 and 14 for the March deal, there are two Draw 2 cards per hand. I grabbed one in each hand, with color covers. If you put a book in one of those hands, just be sure to check if your book will work for a draw 2.

Just a few days left in the round, and we have around 15 books to finish. I love some of the connections in the mini-challenge!

Well done, team. You are all doing great. And, your over-achieving in reading has made it so I haven't had to enter many of the books I have read this month. But, we are totally covered if someone can't finish a book. So, read in happiness, and relax, I've got your back if you just can't finish a book until next month.

First one is orange and the second more blue.

message 419: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Thanks guys, I will not use them for Uno color cards then.

message 420: by Angela (new)

Angela | 655 comments Take A Hint Dani Brown came through on my library holds last night so I will be able to use it as a yellow for March! Take a Hint, Dani Brown (The Brown Sisters, #2) by Talia Hibbert

message 421: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Oh, that reminds me, I got one of the Kindle first titles a couple of months ago that has a yellow cover. I should check to see if that one works too.

message 422: by Alla (new)

Alla (allaskarp) | 364 comments Are all books that have been put on the spreadsheet and not marked finished yet, going to be finished?

message 423: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Morning!
Alla, I think everyone is planning on finishing the books they have on the sheet. The captains have 24 hours after the end of the round to enter books on the official spreadsheet, so if someone doesn't finish a book in time, we can move up the extras that people have been wracking up. If you finish more before the start of the March round, just put them on your Uno shelf anyway, and if I need an extra book, I can grab one from your shelf, or mine, as well. I have a bunch of extras.

Also, have you been enjoying the St Mary's series?

message 424: by Alla (last edited Feb 26, 2021 04:52AM) (new)

Alla (allaskarp) | 364 comments Morning to you too!
Good to know, just wanted to be sure everyone could finish :)

I absolutely love this series!! I´m hooked!!
Starting book 7 today (hopefully).

message 425: by Angela (new)

Angela Snyder | 31 comments Yes. I am over half finished w/mine. I am feeling some pressure from teammates & would appreciate some patience. May I remind them that, again, not everyone reads @the same pace or can listen to audiobooks. Thank you for your understanding.

Just read at your own convenience Angela, no worries and there is no pressure, please don´t take it as such.
Only reason I asked, was if someone was not going to be able to finish and if some card would be needed before we finish this round, that is all :)

message 427: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Pressure? None of us would ever pressure you!
Just stop whatever you are doing and finish your book. Do it now. Or else. teehee

There is no pressure here, Angela, really. Read at whatever pace you feel like reading. If you finish, great, if you don't, we have your back.
The point is to enjoy your book, unless it is a piece of crap writing, then just power through it to the end to find out who-done-it.

message 428: by Angela (new)

Angela | 655 comments Would you recommend the St. Mary's series on audio? I will be trapped in the car next week and was looking for a good audio book.

message 429: by Alla (new)

Alla (allaskarp) | 364 comments Angela wrote: "Would you recommend the St. Mary's series on audio? I will be trapped in the car next week and was looking for a good audio book."

Yes Angela, absolutely, the narrator is really good.

message 430: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Yes, yes, yes!!!!
Those are some of my favorite go-to audios.

Some others that are worthy for a road trip are Into the Darkest Corner by Elizabeth Haynes (thriller), A Place of Execution by Val McDermid (slow burn mystery), The Stupidest Angel A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror (Pine Cove, #3) by Christopher Moore (bloody hilarious), In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan (best character ever- Eliot), Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs (Jane Jameson, #1) by Molly Harper (silly), and Jodi Taylor's other series The Nothing Girl (Frogmorton Farm #1) by Jodi Taylor (heartwarming, funny, and with a large invisible horse).

message 431: by phez (new)

phez (phezweb) I will 100% be done by Sunday.

message 432: by Angela (new)

Angela | 655 comments Thank you so much for the audio recs! I will have to see what I can get my hands!

message 433: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Angela wrote: "Thank you so much for the audio recs! I will have to see what I can get my hands!"

There's more where that came from. Let me know what kind of stories you think you might like, and I can shoot you some more recommendations.
I am usually in my shop by myself, and I only have to stop the audio if I am using the saw, or helping a customer, so I get hours of listening done while I work on people's pictures. Of course, since Covid, I have been swamped, so I am doing a lot of rereads, and it doesn't matter so much if I miss a bit.
Yay for audiobooks, as I get tired of repetitious radio music and talk.

message 434: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 161 comments I just finished reading Slay by Brittney Morris!! SO GOOD! The ending had me shook and I was so engaged throughout the entire story! This is such an important book to read to understand the safe spaces for Black people and also keeping it lighthearted and fun with the awesomeness of the video game world that was created!

More people needs to read this book!!

message 435: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Just added Slay to my TBR list, it does look good.

I have noticed that I struggle with non-fiction audio but can listen to a fiction book I am interested in within a day or two. I did put Migrations on my hold list but it shows a 6 month hold. Agh!

I bought this book about a year ago. I have heard nothing but amazing reviews. Adding to the must read pile. Maybe I will pick it up for a Reverse card this month of next. :)

message 438: by Angela (new)

Angela | 655 comments Is anyone excited about books they are reading for March?

I am going to try to fit in a few middle grade if I can.

I started The Starless Sea which will probably take me the entire month to read.

message 439: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I haven't really decided on what I am reading for March yet. I have a large stack of new titles that are staring at me, and pleading to be the next one I pick up, but I might be just projecting.

I will probably start The Midnight Library and The Memory Theater and Here We Are and Black Buck, but I am not sure at all yet. So many look really good.

message 440: by Angela (new)

Angela | 655 comments I have read The Midnight Library so you could always use that as a Reverse if you pick it up. :)

I had to look up The Memory Theater and Here We Are since I have not heard of them. Another reason I like this game, all the great book recs!

message 441: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I will use the reverse. That decided at least one book for March!

Karin Tidbeck is an author that does strange really well. Her book Jagannath by Karin Tidbeck is the first one of hers that I read, and it made me a big fan. She has some short stories for free on Tor.com, if you want to give one a try.

message 442: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments We have 1 day and 16 hours left in February's round.

If you are starting books for the March hand already, make sure you don't finish them until the new round starts please!!!!!

message 443: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Amanda, I added the read date to your book The Glass Hotel on the spreadsheet, and added a silly mini-challenge connection. By all means, if you have a better one, please change it.

message 444: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 161 comments I don’t know what I’m reading in March either. I’m going to try to get to Truly Devious and The House in the Cerulean Sea for color cards. I also want to try to get to The Alchemists of Loom, I’ll Give You the Sun, and Children of Blood and Bone. Those are just some books I’m thinking about though.

I might have one book I’m carrying over for March but otherwise I will try to finish them all today! Also if you want some good middle grade Angela, I recommend Furthermore by Tahereh Mafi, Sal and Gabi Break the Universe by Carlos Hernandez, The Crowns of Croswald by D.E. Night, and The Screaming Staircase by Jonathan Stroud!

message 445: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 303 comments Will be adding screaming staircase by Jonathan Stroud to my ever growing want to read list- loved the Bartimaeus series.

I thought I would be carrying over pandemonium to March but am really enjoying and may finish tonight :) think we can use this in the mini challenge

message 446: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I just asked in the captains group to make sure, and yes, a book can be used for the mini that is not on the main hand.

It sounds like all of you will be finishing your books, but just to take off any pressure, I did check and we have subs for all of the unfinished books. So, if any of you get busy or distracted, worry not.

What a team!
I am thrilled with you guys. Just saying.

Except, of course, my TBR list is getting a lot bigger thanks to you all.
Every time I think I might wipe a few off the large number, the number grows. Sigh. Life is hard.

I have read Furthermore and agree it was good! I have the second book on the shelf I could always pick up. I also The Screaming Staircase in which I have yet to read so I just pulled that one! Thanks for push to do so. I am also going to look in to the other two you mentioned. Thanks!

message 449: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments My brain. One of you is thinking of reading Who Fears Death (Who Fears Death, #1) by Nnedi Okorafor . Anyone else interested in that? We could maybe do a buddy read.
I have been meaning to read it for a couple of years now. I loved the Binti series.
