Rachael Hewison (rachhewison) | 459 comments Looks like you're all doing great and getting through those books. I'm still working on my first one, had a few assessments at work so spent a lot of my evenings revising. Done some of them this week so hopefully going to get a lot more time to read

There are few other books that are on more than one cards in the spreadsheet Jenny, might be time to choose one card for those I think, just to be sure we have them covered ;) :)

message 253: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Alla, if you mean the hands with the Draw 2 cards, that is fine, If it is something else, I will go take a look.

There were more than that...I think...or I might have been dreaming, lol

message 255: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Stop dreaming about Uno! Whatever will Chris Pine and Idris Elba do if you are not dreaming of them? Or is that just me?

message 256: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Yup, I found one more.
Phez, I took out the duplicate book you put under Wild as well.
We don't get to use the same book twice for Wild or Wild Draw 4 cards, just for Draw 2 cards.
For a hand with Wild in it, we get to use the Wild card as if it is any other card in that hand, but with a new book. So, if the hand has a 3 in it, and the 3 has been used, a different 3 book can go in the Wild slot.

If any of you are playing around on the spreadsheet, and you see weirdness, please tell me, as I am perfectly capable of missing stuff.

At least the GR search function seems to be back, so yay for that!

I struggled getting in to it at the beginning but it did pick up around the 150 page mark. Quite different than her other books. I should finish today.

message 258: by Angela (new)

Angela | 655 comments Remind me how non-fiction works please? Is it only the author and title you can use?

message 259: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Yeah, basically. The example of character that I have seen used is for Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail, where the person the book is about can be used, but not other people in it, even if they are important. I think it is ok to use for example Einstein, if you are reading a biography of him, and the title doesn't start with his name. I can double check in the captains thread if you like, or if you have an example of what you want to try.

Thanks Jenny! That's also how I remember it. I had an audio hold come through yesterday that unfortunately just won't fit any card. :)

message 261: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments What is it? Double check to see if might work for a Reverse card. You never know.

I loved Born a Crime!

message 264: by Katie (new)

Katie Rowen (ksnyds13) I am off to a slow start but I'm reading! Also, I highly recommend Anxious People by Fredrik Backman if there are any fans out there. I finished it right before we started this challenge. Works for 4 and one of the main characters is named Zara, so works for Z too.

Jenny | 2346 comments Angela wrote: "All The Boys Aren't Blue by George Johnson All Boys Aren't Blue by George M. Johnson"

It looks like three of us on this team have it on their TBR, so it might work for a Reverse card later, but it looks like you are the first to read it.

I just bought the Backman book, so it is nice to see a good review. I might try to get to that one in March or April.

I think i'm still confused about the Wild and Draw 4 but I'll get it eventually! It's good that you have been cleaning up the excel.

My laptop background is a collage of my eye candy. I update it when I find a new hottie. Elba and Pine aren't on it. But I do have quite a few others. The Rock, Tom Hardy, Aldis Hodge, Chris Evans, Matt Damon. Like 17 years ago it would have been Orlando Bloom as Legolas filling it up.

If not, then I recommend it, really good!

message 276: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Sometimes those are the best surprises, I agree.
I do buddy reads with a couple of people, and I we take turns suggesting books. Most of the books we have read have been ones I wouldn't otherwise pick up, and I have read some amazing stuff.
Case in point, Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy . Absolutely one of my favorite reads from last year. I have been recommending it to everyone. (If I already mentioned it here, just ignore me).

Jenny | 2346 comments Anytime. I love giving and getting recommendations!

message 282: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 161 comments Guys I finished my first book for Uno and omg it was so beautiful! Definitely getting a book hangover with this one. If you want a hard-hitting contemporary about family, mental illness, and grief, please read The Astonishing Color of After!

I also read a book for school and I’m debating if I should count it or not. It could only go for standalone.

message 283: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Ilsen, so glad you liked your book!!!! I love the term book hangover. Stealing that now, as it is a great description of how I feel after finishing some books.

If your book for school fits a card, by all means use it, as long as you started reading it after the start of the game. If you are unsure about using it, add it to the list of books at the bottom of the spreadsheet, and we can use it if we need to at the end of the month.

message 284: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments And I just added The Astonishing Color to my TBR. It does look good.

Angela | 655 comments Ilsen wrote: "Guys I finished my first book for Uno and omg it was so beautiful! Definitely getting a book hangover with this one. If you want a hard-hitting contemporary about family, mental illness, and grief,..."

I have wanted to read this one for a while. I will have to request it. :)

message 286: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments OK team, the mini challenge has been posted!
It will start on February 14th, but any books you are already reading will count as long as you wait until the 14th to finish them. I am linking it here, and I will link to it in message 6 as well.

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Read it over, and let me know what questions you may have.

The book we are going to be linking other books to is The Color of Magic (Discworld, #1; Rincewind, #1) by Terry Pratchett .
We will get points if one person from the team reads it, but everyone can if they want too. (Only extra points once though.)

Anyway, read up, and get the creative juices flowing.

message 287: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I will add a tab to the spreadsheet for the mini later tonight or tomorrow.

message 288: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 161 comments So anything connected to The Color of Magic, whether it be the color of the cover or the vague things in the synopsis can count? I just want to see what can be connected to it so I can see what can fit

message 289: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Yes. Anything can be connected to it if you are creative-
-read a book with magic in the title
-read a book tagged fantasy
-read a book written by Neil Gaiman, since he and Pratchett were friends
-read a book that was made into a tv show after the author died (Good Omens came out after Pratchett died)
-read a book with a sentient non human object in it
-read a book with an unusual friendship
-read a book where someone uses a mode of transportation
-etc, etc, etc.

Basically, anything can work. Once one of us has read the book (I am happy to), then they can list some things from the plot to connect to. There is likely a Wiki page dedicated to Pratchett, or to this series of books, so lots of info to be had there, or on fan sites.

-read a book written by a tall person, or one that has a beard, or is from England (I am just guessing here, I haven't looked up Pratchett yet).

And, remember that this is not 40 more books to read, but using the books you are reading for cards, and getting extra points for them by making them fit with this theme.

message 290: by Angela (new)

Angela | 655 comments Thanks for the clarification Jenny! I will set aside the book I am currently reading and start another one. Twist my arm why don't ya? :)

message 291: by Alla (new)

Alla (allaskarp) | 364 comments Can the book both be for the mini challenge and the Uno cards or only either?

message 292: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Alla wrote: "Can the book both be for the mini challenge and the Uno cards or only either?"

The book you read counts for the mini and the Uno hand. So, if you have a book planned for a 2 card, see if you can connect it to our 80's book in some weird way, and you will get ten extra points for the book. We still only have to read as many books as there are cards to play for our Uno hand.
This is just for fun and extra points.

message 293: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Angela wrote: "Thanks for the clarification Jenny! I will set aside the book I am currently reading and start another one. Twist my arm why don't ya? :)"

Great, then I´m going to wait until the 14th to finish at least 3 of my books, I think they are all tagged as Fantasy

I read a Man called Ove. It was a nice, heartwarming drama, I usually don't read those kinds of books, but I'm in a book club here at home and we take turns picking books.

message 297: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Sue (misscimi) | 28 comments Okay, I think a few of the books I'm reading can be tied to the mini-challenge. I'm hoping to finish a few this weekend. *fingers crossed*

I'm getting my second covid vaccine today, so I'm hoping I don't get sick.

message 298: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I hope your vaccine goes well, and you have zero side effects!

Remember that only books finished on the 14th or after will count towards the mini-challenge.
We have plenty of books left unread or unclaimed, so don't worry if you are finishing stuff pre-mini challenge. We will be fine.

message 299: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Phez, I loved A Man Called Ove too! Again, not one I was likely to just pick up, but I am glad I did.

A Time For Mercy.

I am having difficulty following this game. I am also having difficulty figuring out how to get to this thread through Goodreads as well as the Spreadsheet? Am I supposed to be getting emails with notifications? If so, I am not getting them. Are we supposed to fill in the Spreadsheet with ALL the books we plan to read or as we read? It is still not clear.
