phez (phezweb) Hello I’m Pheasant and I’m new to UNO so any help is appreciated. I’m great with Google docs so I will be checking that out ASAP!! My goal is 50 books for 2021- I like challenges and wanted to pick a hard goal. I’m real excited to start! I live in Kansas, I have 8 black cats (1 tuxedo) and yes I’m obsessed with cats! I also like watching the Chicago Bears lose hahaha. Love watching TV and movies and of course reading!

message 102: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Pheasant, do you want me to change your name in the drop down on the spreadsheet? (Or do you want to?)

My two non-black cats and I are happy to have you here!

I am curious, did you only want black cats, or did it just happen that way?
My last black cat was named Obiwan. He had a roommate named of course, Vader, but he left with my ex. Good riddance to the guy, but I missed the kitty. teehee

Jenny | 2346 comments Morning!
Did you all feel the Earth shift on its axis yesterday? It snowed in parts of Phoenix. So weird. Of course, the snow lasted for about five minutes, but still.

So, it seems like everyone is comfy using the spreadsheet, so unless I hear otherwise, I will not get a books read thread set up.

I have my pile of books I plan to read sitting on a shelf. Staring at me. Knowing that I will change my mind about some of them, and put off reading them again. Sometimes I feel guilty about that, but...

message 105: by Nicole B (new)

Nicole B | 119 comments Nothing too exciting where i'm at sadly. I'm praying for snow. I love it so much but we had it when I was going to work so it caused me more grief than joy lol.

My pile of books is waiting and I'm eager to get started. I have like 700 unread books on kindle and it's time to get that number down. Plus read the actual books I have littered about the house :)

message 106: by Angela (new)

Angela Snyder | 31 comments Oh shoot, wait, I finished the John Grisham book on Jan 10 so that doesn't count as we officially do not start until this Monday, Feb. 1?
Darn!

message 107: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Angela. That was the last book available. Ever. So sorry that you have nothing left to read. It is like getting all the way through Netflix.

teehee

Nope, we have to wait to start the books we are going to use in this challenge.
Also, seriously don't worry if you change your minds about what you are going to read, if you put a title on the spreadsheet. We have a month to get through about a hundred books, and moods change and book availability changes, etc.
My guess is that this team will be there to pick up any slack. If someone has real life crap that gets in the way, we collectively will have each others' back.

message 108: by Angela (new)

Angela | 655 comments I added a few more books to the spreadsheet as I have library books I need to read. A few "I" books which always seem harder to find?

I always kick myself for checking books out when I have so many at home and on my kindle to read. Tsk, tsk.

The spreadsheet is currently loading and it is taking a long time... and I see that many rows are filled out. So.... for Hand 1- does that mean all the cards are "taken"? So I can only pick from Hand 2 and after? And I can start reading for Hand 2 on February 1?

Does "I" count if the book starts with an "I" like "I Jumped the Ball" or "I killed Zoe Spanos"

One last question-- This is for 3 months- so we should pick however many books we can read in those 3 months. Is there a limit to the hands-- like should we only pick 1 book per hand? Okay I'm done I think I got the spreadsheet up and running and working too.

message 112: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Sue (misscimi) | 28 comments @NicoleB

You have 700 books on your Kindle? Wow! That is quite impressive and you certainly have plenty to choose from for this challenge. How do you pick one? Do you just scroll and wherever you stop that what you read?

message 113: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Phez, yes, I works if the book title starts with "I".
The cards that are up are for February. We have 15 hands of seven cards each. Next month it will be 16 hands, and April will have 17 hands. Or something like that. So, over the three months, we as a team will be reading over three hundred books. Grab as many as you want, and since we will likely finish out all of the cards, it makes no difference if you start from the top.

You can pick more than one book per hand if you wish. Remember that Draw Two cards in a hand mean that one book in that hand must work for two cards.

Does that all make sense?

Basically lol. Challenges like this help me focus and pick a book. Sometimes I'll use the Goodreads to give me a random book on the bookshelf. I'm really bad at actually reading the stuff I buy. My Want to Read is over a thousand now so I want to get some of them in the Read pile.

message 115: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Phez, I am answering here instead of on the ss, as I wasn't on line when you asked there before.
You absolutely can use your book Claim Me for the draw two in hand four.
List the book again under the second card you want to use, and then again under the draw four card. For the reason column for the draw four is list the two cards you used.

message 116: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I have added the countdown to the start of the game in message six of this thread.

For me, if I feel like waking up at two in the morning, I can start then. Probably not.

message 117: by Nicole B (new)

Nicole B | 119 comments The challenge starts at a nice time for me but sadly on a workday. I'll get most of my reading down Tuesday to Thursday with maybe one over the course of the next four days depending on how tired I am after my shift :)

Now in that awkward period of time where I've finished my last book but have a few days yet before starting lol.

message 118: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Good time to reread a favorite book that doesn't fit a card.

Hi welcome! I also have 2 cats :) Bagheera (all black apart from a few white hairs on his chest that always grow back)/Baggy and Willow- our white and tabby who swoops in for food like a seagull hunting chips.

Dawn | 303 comments Speaking of cats, I've picked up Varjak Paw (Varjak Paw #1) by S.F. Said 2] as I thought a book from a cat's perspective might be fun! It is a children's book but it is around 250 pages so can I still use for the challenge?

message 121: by Nicole B (new)

Nicole B | 119 comments I remember that book. I picked it up by chance at my school library when I was a teen. I remember enjoying it a lot. I hope you do too :) I think it's ok though Jenny can confirm. The word count has to be above 25000 I think and according to AC is 34000.

message 122: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Yes, it will work if the word count is above 25,000.
Cute cover.

message 123: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Ok guys. Here is a completely random challenge for you.
Everybody can write a haiku. So, write one about Uno, 80's movies, your cat, anything. Bonus points for making me snort coffee out of my nose. (I am not actually awarding points, just being silly and passing the time between now and the start of the challenge).

Here is one to start us off...

eighties hair was dire
shoulder pads, leg warmers, worse
Tron saved the decade

Ilsen | 161 comments I made a fatal mistake in which I started a book in January thinking I would finish it and ummm I don’t think I will and I could have used it for Uno 😫😫😫

message 127: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Not fatal! Just annoying.
I have just a few chapters left in the book I have been reading at work (lunch, random breaks), and I left it there so I can't finish it tonight. I am trying to not start anything new. It is hard.

message 128: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I added a couple of books to the spreadsheet this morning, and went through what you guys had already put on there. We are going to be an amazing team. Just saying.

I added links to books that didn't have them, and Phez, I added your book in hand four to the Draw 2.

One thing I would appreciate is when you use a character name or author name as the reason for the card, is to put the name down instead of just the initial. (4 card) C- Fatima, (9 card) A- Nelson, etc.

Only a couple of days left to wait!!!!!!!

message 129: by phez (new)

phez (phezweb) Jenny- yes I understand! Thank you so much! I’m excited

No please keep posting things, it helps me get in the habit of remembering all the cards. How did you guys pick the letters for the card numbers? Is that random or did you pick less common letters?

If you are using Google Docs on a PC, you left click the cell and a pop up menu will appear, insert link, then you go to your book's goodreads page and copy/paste it

So it's kind of a combination of both. Two years ago, I had a roomate, he brought in a stray, and she stayed inside. Then after a while her belly was swollen, so she had babies January 25, 2019. Then he got her fixed. She was a black cat. Gave birth to 4 black cats and 1 dark gray cat. Unfortunately 1 passed a couple weeks later so idea what happened. The little dark gray one was the runt, and he got sudden kitten syndrome, he checked all the boxes and we couldn't help him. That really hit us hard. Then in October 2019, I saw one of my babies get hit by a truck in the daytime, on a residential street, he was inside cat but the outside really intrigued him and he would escape, It was traumatizing and it still makes me cry all the time :( But I still have the last 2 black cats. Not too long after, my parents had a coworker whose mother passed and had a cat around 7-8 years old, so we took her in. It took over 6 months for her to relax and stop hiding. She just happened to be a black cat. Then around the same time my friend had two black kittens that needed a home, so we took them in. Then late 2020, my friend is a cat foster home, and I went over to her house and fell in love immediately with three kittens , two black and 1 tuxedo. So we adopted them too. I do think black cats are super cute and they are adopted the least!! Sorry for the long story. I live with 3 others so it's like we have 2 cats each haha. I am definitley the "mother" of 7, the oldest one is my parents cat. When I move out who knows because I love those cats so much, it hurts!!!

So most of yall read a lot of books a month, huh? I need to step my game up.

message 139: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I love the haiku!
I am just sitting down at work for a minute, and then i have to go back and put the frames together that I cut this morning. Fridays. I will be chattier as soon as I get hime!

message 140: by Nicole B (new)

Nicole B | 119 comments The haiku's purfect :)

And don't worry about reading too much lol. The years I've struggled most in them challenges are the years I've forced myself to do more than I can. Its soo tempting though and I want my TBR pile reduced to more controllable level lol.

message 141: by Angela (new)

Angela | 655 comments I only read so much now because I have worked from home for the past two years. Not having the commute every day gives me a lot more time for reading. :)

I remember when I worked out of the office. I would close my door, lay a blanket on the floor and read for as long as I could at lunch (usually until someone knocked urgently needing me). I only slightly miss those days. haha

message 142: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I'm lucky as well that I can listen to books when I am at work. Although lately I have been so busy that I end up having to rewind and listen again. Stupid customers coming in and wanting framing done. I mean yay! I am busy!
I also usually have several going at once, although I learned a while ago to keep different genres going at the same time. It is too easy to get confused if I am listening to a mystery and reading one.

Phez, I love the story of your kitty-monsters. I would love to have more than two, as every time I see a stray or visit a pet shop and see the cats up for adoption my heart breaks a little. But, my two love each other and I hesitate to mess with that dynamic.

Thanks for the haikus, guys. I am tempted to ask for sonnets next, but perhaps I will wait for April to do that. teehee

message 145: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Just plug them into the ss, unless you can't for some reason. I don't mind adding stuff to the ss, especially if any of you are using your phone, and then that is just annoying to try to do.

That sentence totally made sense in my head.

I liked the eighties too. End of high school, going to college, wearing perfectly amazing clothes!

Jenny | 2346 comments Oh, and by the way team, you can absolutely visit other teams' threads to say hello, check up on a friend, drop suggestions for books, whatever.

Since this game is more about participation and fun, and less about beating the other teams into submission (teehee), the threads are not private.
