Angela | 655 comments Who Fears Death came in via the library for me! Our library actually re-opened today and I am so stoked.

Even better news is that I am getting my first covid vaccine on Thursday!

Jenny | 2346 comments Yay and double Yay and triple Yay!!!!!!!!

Do you have time to start that book now-ish? Was there anyone else who wanted to do a buddy read?
Shall we do it here, or get a different thread?

message 553: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I sent in the guesses, and two were wrong, but, I figured out the right ones, and we are all good now.
We get all the bonus points for that, so yay team!
Now, we just need to read a bunch of books.

Please feel free to grab spots on the mini-challenge, and we are missing some color cards (Yellow) and a couple of Wild Draw 4s for the Uno hand, so check your books to see if any of them are ones you all can cover.

I can start this weekend? I have three reads happening right now so I would like to at least wrap up 2 of those first. :)

A different thread would probably be best so we don't annoy or give spoilers to the rest of the team. :)

Angela Snyder | 31 comments How do you go about doing a buddy read? Via zoom? or in person if you live close enough? I wouldn't mind giving it a whirl.

Started reading The Hunting Party tonight- this can work for yellow 3 as a wild card 4 I think. However I wasn't sure if 2 wild draw 4s could be used both for yellow 3? A wild card 4 for this particular colour card has been used in another hand :)

Hi Dawn! You can take the spot of WD4 for the 3 yellow. I am 75% sure that the book I started last night will be able to go in to either the 5 or 7 yellow spot.

message 561: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 303 comments Hi Angela,

Thank you, that is great news!!

I'll pick your brain some more- does this count as a black and white cover? A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

message 562: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments That looks black and white to me.

message 563: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Another busy day at work, so i will answer other questions when I get home. That one was easy though...

message 564: by Angela (new)

Angela | 655 comments That also looks black and white to me! If not, I cannot think of any other book that would be a more perfect fit.

message 565: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I set up a buddy read thread here...

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

for anyone who wants to read Who Fears Death (Who Fears Death, #1) by Nnedi Okorafor starting Saturday.

message 566: by phez (new)

phez (phezweb) Okay I totally missed the music guessing trivia part, I thought you guys were talking about books! Ha! Where were these trivia questions? Ah well!

message 567: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I will try to be more explicit about where to find the rules for the mini-challenges for next month. I did post a link to the rules when they came out.

At least you were spared the endless searching through 80's videos, and skipped the brain worms that resulted from those searches. teehee
It was memory lane for me.

Go to the March mini tab to grab books for the tasks we need to complete, if you want to.

message 568: by phez (new)

phez (phezweb) I probably just overlooked it and assumed the book list was it. I might have only looked on phone and my laptop is better for goodreads. My fault! I do have a book that is about a punk band that started in the 80s too actually!

message 569: by Angela (new)

Angela | 655 comments Let me know if anyone wants to cover my 2 green. I can read another book to fit the mini challenge if I moved that card off my plate. If not, I have no problem still reading it. :)

message 570: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I probably could do that. I will check later today.

message 571: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Nevermind, I just checked, and I can cover the green with a book I have already read and not put on the spreadsheet. I will put it on the sheet later today.

message 572: by Jenny (last edited Mar 20, 2021 05:26PM) (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments We are kicking ass and taking names this round so far!

All we need for unclaimed cards is one each of...

7 Yellow
Skip
Wild Draw 4 (can use 4 or 5 Red, 1 or 5 or 7 Yellow, 2 Green)

And for the mini challenge, the following tasks...

6. Read a book with a white suit or white hat on the cover
8. Read a book with a black leather jacket on the cover
12. Read a book where a male character is wearing his hair long/with a long-haired man on the cover
17. Read a book with a rags-to-riches plot
18. Read a book with diamond jewellery on the cover
19. Read a book set in Detroit (Motown)
22. Read a book where the MC is a dancer
23. Read a book where a character has permed hair/gets their hair permed
25. Read a book where a character is royalty/ shelved as "royal(s)" or “royalty"
30. Read a book with the word "Dance" in the title/ top shelf “Dance"
38. Read a book with the word "eclipse" in the title// an eclipse depicted on the cover

As always, when we get close to the end of the month, remember to release any cards you think you won’t finish.

Nice job so far guys.

message 573: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 303 comments Just finished 'A Monster Calls'... I'm not sure I had any expectations starting this book but I was not expecting that. Could not put it down, been such a long time since a book has moved me in a big way like that. Literal tears down my face down the end, but it was so beautifully done. A book that will stay with me a long time for sure

message 574: by phez (new)

phez (phezweb) Wow those are tricky books to find! Eclipse the twilight book I bet will be a popular one for that. I've read it before but not in awhile. Good times!

message 575: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 303 comments Agree Phez! Will have to trawl through the list features on goodreads for some inspiration :)

message 576: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments In looking for books to cover the tasks, I ran across one that clearly shows that some men should not have long hair...
Under the Radar (SEAL EXtreme Team #3) by Kimberley Troutte

message 577: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Yay!
I found books for all of the remaining tasks. So, if anyone needs a free recommendation from KU or Audible Plus, all but the perm one are on those platforms. Let me know if you want me to list what I found.
I won't claim any spots for a couple of days.

message 578: by Angela (new)

Angela | 655 comments Jenny all I can think of when I hear men with long hair is Fabio.

I do have a book to fit the leather jacket task. I still have a few books left to read so I will let you know by Thursday if I have time to pick it up.

message 579: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I used to work in a book store, and every time a new Fabio book came out (remember that he "wrote" books too?), I did a dramatic reading of at least the opening scene for the staff and whatever lucky customers were there that day. Not sure I helped his sales much. teehee

message 580: by Angela (new)

Angela | 655 comments That's hilarious!

message 581: by Angela (new)

Angela | 655 comments Head's up! I just removed a Reverse card as I just read another that fit the mini challenge.

message 582: by Alla (new)

Alla (allaskarp) | 364 comments When is the end date for this round?

message 583: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 161 comments If you guys need a recommendation for the eclipse prompt, there’s the new release by Rebecca Roanhorse called Black Sun that has an eclipse on the cover and it’s about an eclipse

message 584: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Alla wrote: "When is the end date for this round?"

Last day of March, I forget what time of day, but I will post the countdown when we get closer.

I keep almost picking that one up. Is it good?

message 586: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 161 comments I actually haven’t read that one but it’s been on my radar and I really want to try something by her!

teehee

message 588: by Angela (new)

Angela | 655 comments I actually have that book!!!!

message 589: by phez (new)

phez (phezweb) Working full time now and a part-time online college student so plate is full but I'm still reading, and my goal is the same, I want to do minimum of 4 a month. I'm behind my goal for the year but I will get back on track. Mid May to Mid August I won't have classes so I'm hoping to really get ahead during the summer. Hope everyone is doing well.

message 590: by Katie (new)

Katie Rowen (ksnyds13) I love seeing all of your book recommendations! I'm in a similar boat to Phez with work right now, but still reading!

message 591: by Jenny (new)

12. Under the Radar
18. The Diamond
22. To Dance Again
30. When She Dances

message 592: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 161 comments I just cleared the two Wild Draw 4 because I don’t think I’m getting to the books. I hope people can shift some things around. I’m sorry, things have been busy this week and my TBR keeps changing

message 593: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments No worries. I will take a look at what we need.

message 594: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments Ok, check your books. We need a 7 Yellow, a Reverse, and 2 Wild Draw 4s, which can be any of these- 0 Blue, 7 Blue, 4 Red, 5 Red, 1 Yellow, 5 Yellow or 7 Yellow.

message 595: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 2346 comments I will check later this week when I have a minute, but if any of the boos you have already read or plan to read fit any of the above, let me know, and I will move stuff around. on the spreadsheet.

Thanks guys.

message 596: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 303 comments I'll take a look this afternoon- my work has cut my hours due to the effects of lockdown but a pro is that I have more time to read !

message 597: by Dawn (new)

Dawn | 303 comments Got a short 7 yellow book that will work!

message 598: by Angela (new)

Angela | 655 comments Jenny wrote: "Ok, check your books. We need a 7 Yellow, a Reverse, and 2 Wild Draw 4s, which can be any of these- 0 Blue, 7 Blue, 4 Red, 5 Red, 1 Yellow, 5 Yellow or 7 Yellow."

You can use Fighting Words or Amari and the Night Brothers as WD4's since they both have blue covers.

message 599: by Angela (new)

Angela | 655 comments I can also take the leather jacket prompt as I should have time to read That Forever Girl (Getting Lucky, #2) by Meghan Quinn this weekend.

Awesome! I kept looking for one but couldn't find anything on my shelves. :)
