YA. Can't remember year, I read it when I was young. Opening begins with a dog or wolf named Queen. She has a puppy but is by a black wolf early on, I believe. The puppy is nearly killed as well but the book is about how the puppy survives, grows up.

I never made it beyond the wolf killing Queen and almost her puppy part.
