Hello and welcome to Team The Breakfast Club!

It this the time of year again... UNO is here!

For those of you who are new to this challenge, do not worry. It may look like it is a lot to take in at first sight, but you'll see that it is a very easy game. It merely involves some crazy colours and keeping an eye on character names while reading.

I will be your captain this year and I admit, I have a gif issue at times. And this movie has so many iconic scenes.... I want to post them all haha. Who here has seen the movie? If you haven't, go watch it, seriously, it's good fun! :-D

First things first though!
Please read the RULES. Yes, I know, it involves reading. The horror ;-) If you're uncertain, it usually helps to go over them again. And then have a look at the spreadsheet to make it all more visual. And if you still have questions, I am all ears!

When you arrive in the thread, please post a link to your Uno shelf!

Most important of all: HAVE FUN!

Mary Hangen | 376 comments Hello to everyone! I am your co-captain this year. I am super excited to get started with the challenge! 2 weeks is going to drag on! haha

I already have 15 books that I am thinking about and piled on my coffee table...and 2 more weeks to add more! :) ...my poor coffee table...

Hi Mary I know what you mean about the weeks dragging on as I have been holding back reading certain books because they work for this challenge.

message 12: by Jhmingos (new)

Jhmingos | 417 comments I've made shelves and have been saving books for this challenge too. Can't wait to get started.

message 13: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Some make piles, some make shelves.

Hopefully there are enough colour cards everywhere to cover all of ours! :-D

There will be quite a few hehe.

message 14: by Eldarwen (last edited Jan 19, 2021 11:57PM) (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Since it's never too early to start planning a little and since the people who are already on the thread have piles or shelves of books prepared for Uno... ;-)

Here are our colour cards for February:

- 5 Red
- 4 Yellow
- 2 Red - Federica Targeted: My Inside Story of Cambridge Analytica and How Trump and Facebook Broke Democracy
- 9 Green
- 3 Blue - Raven The Mystery of Three Quarters
- 8 Green - Eldarwen By a Thread
- 6 Yellow - Lizzie The Scapegoat
- 4 Green
- Wild Draw 4 - duplicating 3 Blue - Mary The Nightingale
- Wild Draw 4

And I'm going to immediately call dibs on the 8 Green! So I can continue with the Elemental Assassin series by reading By a Thread (Elemental Assassin, #6) by Jennifer Estep :-D

message 15: by Mary (new)

Mary Hangen | 376 comments I am going to sort through my books and see what color covers I can possibly match :)

message 16: by Federica (new)

Federica (federicag) | 109 comments Hi team! This is my first time doing the UNO challenge and I'm really excited about it!

I had a couple of questions before starting, maybe you might know the answers given your experience with the challenge:
- I have a few titles is mind already as well, will we be sharing these with the team? If yes, when and how will we do it?
- Do books in languages that aren't English count?
- How does it work to decide who gets each card?

Sorry if these questions are obvious but I just wanted to make sure I had everything clear before starting.

Looking forward to this and I'm already planning a rewatch of the Breakfast Club before Feb 1st :)

message 17: by Eldarwen (last edited Jan 19, 2021 12:34PM) (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Hey Federica!

Ok, first off, anything non-English will of course count! The first letter of the title will be used in whatever language you're going to be reading in. Same goes for character names, though those generally do not change all that much from one language to another.

If you already have a few titles in mind that you are certain you want to read, share away!! Just post them here in the thread, and if you already know which cards they could potentially work for, please let us know. No need to wait :-)

Also, we do not decide who reads for which cards until we get towards the end of the month maybe (if needed), EXCEPT for the colour cards since those are more difficult and so we don't read colour books we may not be able to use for a colour card this month - because there are three months total with a lot of colour cards.

message 18: by Mary (new)

Mary Hangen | 376 comments I'd like to claim red 2 if that's okay! I think this would work perfectly as long as The Vampire Diaries counts as part of the title. And I've been dying to read it. Phantom (The Vampire Diaries The Hunters, #1) by L.J. Smith

message 19: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments "The" can count. But in the case of this book the title is done a little weirdly. What counts is the title mentioned on the GR page, which for this one is "Phantom". How odd that the original title mentions the entire series and subseries before getting to the actual title o.O

Think there might be a T character in there somewhere? Or maybe one with I? (For the 5 Red).

Otherwise, keep it for next month! It may work then!

Ravenclaw Library Books (ravenclawlibrarybooks) | 234 comments I like to claim 3Blue please. The Mystery Of Three Quarters The Mystery of Three Quarters (New Hercule Poirot Mysteries, #3) by Sophie Hannah

That's what I was wondering. Such a weird title. No I or T for characters. I shall save it for next month. :)

Mary Hangen | 376 comments I have these two on my to-read list that possibly work for 3 Blue/Wild Draw 4.

Exit West I am a little worried because it fades to purple.

I don't have the best eye for picking colors haha

Exit West by Mohsin Hamid
The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

Hmm, yes, Exit West is a little too much on the faded blue, purple side, I'd say. Odd book, btw. If you want to read it, you can use it for a Reverse as I've read it. :-)

One of the Wild Draw 4 cards is yours, duplicating the 3 Blue!

I shall use it for a reverse! It seems like a short read...hopefully.

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Federica wrote: "Would Anxious People by Fredrick Backman be ok for 4 Yellow? Anxious People"

Hmmm, I'm tempted to say no for that one unfortunately. The yellow sticks out but it isn't >50% of that colour. Sorry!

No problem! What about Targeted My Inside Story of Cambridge Analytica and How Trump and Facebook Broke Democracy by Brittany Kaiser for 2 Red?

Thanks!

Then I am totally failing hahahah.

Federica (federicag) | 109 comments Btw, for Hand One, I'm happy to take any card that remains free. On my list I have:
- 0: Febbre by Jonathan Bazzi - It's a standalone book
- 4: Anxious People by Fredrik Backman - Author Name with F
- Skip: Unmarriageable by Soniah Kamal - Author Surname with K

They shall be added to the spreadsheet!

(Not necessarily Hand One, just so you know.)

message 39: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Federica, do you have a hardcopy of Febbre? Because that background looks suspiciously yellow to me. A very light yellow but yellow. And there's more background than on the Backman book.

message 40: by Federica (new)

Federica (federicag) | 109 comments I have the hardcopy and it's more ivory than yellow, it's a very very light colour

message 41: by Federica (new)

Federica (federicag) | 109 comments If we need a Yellow book I'm happy to read this for 6 Yellow We Are Never Meeting in Real Life. by Samantha Irby , author starts with an S

message 42: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Aah ok, thanks for clarifying!

Do keep that 6 Yellow book in mind in case nobody else has anything for it, but quite a few more people still need to pop in and we want to leave them a chance as well to snag a colour card :-)

(And 2 more months to come with lots of colour cards!)

message 43: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments I'm off to bed now. Will be back in the morning to answer questions etc etc.

Please remember to link your Uno shelves, thank you! :-)

Good night!

Jhmingos | 417 comments I think The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead will work for 5 Red. One of the settings is in Indiana.

If we need a yellow cover, The Scapegoat by Daphne du Maurier
will fit for 6 (Title: Scapegoat) or 4 (Place: France)

Here's the link to my Uno Shelf

I'm super excited for Uno. This is my second time participating. I'm planning on picking out some of my books for next month tonight so hopefully I'll be able to help with some of the color cards!

Also, I love the 80s theme!

Carlie (carlie892) | 159 comments Hello team!!

This is my third time doing uno and I’m so excited to get started. I’ll take a look through my bookshelves this week to see if I can find any matches for color cards that haven’t been claimed yet.

Here is the link to my uno-2021 shelf.

I’m loving this theme, too. The Breakfast Club is such a great movie!
