Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) i'm just not feeling this book! i'm getting those slightly aggrivated, eye rolling feelings that i had every time i tried reading the secret! it's saying a whole lot of nothing in a very fluffy, ethereal way so far (to me!) i know i'm no longer into any kind of self help-ish books, but, i'm really trying, yet i think it's going to end up unfinished! i just don't see how anyone can get anything from this! (and i still don't get how anyone got anything from the secret!)

Amanda (randymandy) | 467 comments Seriously, I think you have to be in the right frame of mind to get anything out of books like these. If it's not something you NEED from a psychological standpoint, then it's probably not worth it. I loved the Alchemist, but I was stuck in a rut at the time. A year or so later, my sister tried to get me to read The Secret and whenever she was telling me about it, I did Jo's good ol' eye roll!!! hee hee

Liz Thank God!!! I thought I was the only one. After all the raves about this book I went out and picked it up and began reading it right away. Page after page after page I forgot what I had just read!!!! I thought wait a minute, this is supposed to be earth shattering. Oprah said this book should change my life or something?? Right?? Well, maybe it turns out my life doesn't need so much changing after all. Also, it is just not that great a book LOL!!

You all made me glad I waited for the hype to die down a bit to hear the real reviews.

Amanda (randymandy) | 467 comments Yeah, I think we should just be glad for the surprise life changing reads. Anything from a biography to a comic strip has life-changing potential, so there is really no use trying to force it. After all, we might all be connected, but we are still vastly different people in different times and places in our lives.

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) yippie! i'm not the only one!

my way of thinking about a lot of things began changing at teh beginning of this year, but, i realized at some point in my mid to late 20's that no matter how much i looked, i wasn't going to find the answers for my pain in any book!

not saying that you can't get some great suggestions of things to try & incorporate into your life to help you change certain habits or ways of thinking because you certainly can! if they work out, great, if not, that's ok too!

but i think if you take a book like this (or eat pray love) and use it as your own guide book, i think you're eventually going to end up right back where you were when you 1st started! we all have a different way and trying to make someone else's way work as if it's your own... well, i just don't think it's going to work!

i mention eat pray love because of watching the 2 episodes about it & author liz gilbert on oprah and everytime i heard a woman say it was now her 'bible' i cringed! i thought to myself 'oh honey! you're going to be in a world of hurt after the exciting high of thinking you found "it" wears off & you're back where you started!' (and i LOVED eat pray love and i came away with a lot from it & yes, i think parts of it helped me to see some things differently, but is it now my 'bible'?! no!)

i'm not as much of a follower of oprah as i was in my early & mid 20's, but i do still enjoy her show from time to time. i don't tend to go for her book club selections anymore though after seeing that they were doing a weekly class on a new earth, i thought it might be interesting! (problem is i can't view the class video's even though i downloaded the player from her site! it's constantly freezing up!) ah well!

Holli I completely agree with you guys regarding the Secret and New Earth....I honestly don't feel I need someone to tell me how to "be happy and fulfilled". I started to read both of these books and put them down quickly---I knew they weren't for me. I like to come to realizations about my life on my own without anyone's guidance or suggestions and even though that means I learn things the hard way its how I learn them. I tell my friends all the time.....your life will get easy when you want it to and not a moment sooner!! That's all anyone needs to know....think happy and you'll be happy....its really not that hard!! LOL

Rolana | 22 comments I usually hate self help books. Yes, I know I need all the help I can get. LOL, but I really end up thinking in the back of my mind that every self help book is filled with information that you really know in the back of your mind. So, I'm glad I didn't run out and get it. I knew I could count on my Chick Lit members to give the real review on this book.

MJ I thought I was the only one!!! The Secret was not my thing either I didnt even finish it so I thought I would try A New Earth, I usually enjoy books Oprah picks, still nothing. I was starting to wonder if it was me!!!

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) nope, definately not you! i'm plodding away through it slowly, just so i can be done w/it (and in case there's anything to get out of it!) but, it's no easy, enlightening read i can tell ya'll that!

Sandy (sandila) | 75 comments I made it to Chapter 4 and gave up. I was the same way, I'd read pages and forget what they said or realize that he just keeps repeating things or switching them around.

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) i watched most of oprah yesterday (taped it to see what i missed when we went out) and she had on a bunch of people who said that this book has made them think about certain things in a different way which has helped to ease their worries and stress. i had put the book down, unfinished because of how unsatisfying it was for me. i'll watch what i taped and maybe pick it up again & TRY to keep an open mind and see when i end up getting from it, if anything. (maybe i know some of it already! who knows?!) i'll let you all know what i think when i'm done!
