I really, really liked this book. I am not as weird as Eleanor, but I do know that it is what prevents me from having friends. She may have a more horrible back story than mine, but it sure would be nice to have a true friend like hers.

I find this one of these books which either loved or hated by those who read it. I happened to love it and gave it a similar rating. I loved it so that I thought my wife and daughter would also. Nope! They hated it. As I heard from others, I received polarized reviews.
Raymond was a true delight, wasn’t he! I loved this book too - Eleanor was such a complex and interesting person.
My objection was that it seemed too easy for her to make friends after all those years of not doing so, especially because she hadn't really dealt with her past issues. I think the main thing is that I expected something more humorous based on the descriptions. So the issue was more my assumption than the book itself.
I gave it 4*. As someone who is also socially awkward - despite not having the character's tramatic past - I found it easy to relate to Eleanor. But there were a few things that bugged me. For example, the way that her drinking was handled was unrealistic to me.
I also loved it, gave it 5 stars. It hit the right spot with the "character study" and psychology for me, while still being endearing and quirky.

And I was in “Slightly under the rave - there were a few elements that bothered me clinically, but without that, a good ride” camp. A camp shared by more than a few reviewers in our group.

He just kept including her in things, and accepted her as she was. They say to make a friend, you have to be a friend.

And another aspect I love about British stories in book and TV is there are often platonic relationships between men and women that just don't seem to exist in American TV. Seems like eventually they have to get romantic.
