There's this one or this one in my library. Nicole Kidman: The Biography 2003
Nicole Kidman 2002
It may cover when she was married to Tom Cruise and he was into Scientology. From what I know the marriage fell apart after the disastrous movie Eyes Wide Shut when they played a married couple together.
Aw, there doesn't seem to be any bios on Keith in my library.Except for this e-book.
Want to read this one?
Fortunate Son: The Unlikely Rise of Keith Urban
The inventor I am interested doesn't have easy-to-obtain biographies (but his wife wrote one). After working for Edison until Edison lost funding, and a few other places, he took out over 500 patents and invented things such as the precursor to modern rader, the first wireless telephone AND he was the first to get voice to carry over radio waves (Marconi licensed his inventions.). Reginald Aubrey Fessenden, who greatly admired Edison.Edison was an amazing inventor, but fwiw he didn't invent the incandescent bulb nor did he claim to, but bought a patent from a Canadian inventor and perfected that man's invention.
FYI, I have a passion for Canadian inventors et al who are so often overlooked. Every time you watch a basketball game you are watching a sport invented/developed by a Canadian (yes, he was living in the States). Hockey, OTOH, is from Scotland--field--so ice hockey was a take off on that.
Rambling will stop here :)!
I obtained a Time-Life biography of Thomas Edison called TIME Thomas Edison: His Electrifying LifeSo, not really a personal life bio but more about his public inventing life. If anyone wants to read along with me or a different bio on him it should be interesting. It was the only one I could find in the library available. As I don't really know that much about him it should be interesting.
Does anybody want to buddy read Exactly: How Precision Engineers Created the Modern World by Simon WinchesterIt's about engineers...!
I'm watching Nicole Kidman in Big Little Lies. How does she always look so beautiful in every single thing she does. She's like a modern day Grace Kelly (and she did actually play Grace Kelly in a movie). It's probaby not something a biography would really answer though. Though apparently Marilyn Monroe wore falsies, dyed her hair, and had a constant drama coach and lived on sleeping pills, while Gwenyth Paltrow is constantly telling the world she's conciously uncoupling and surviving on wheatgrass and organic goop.
I've already read Reese Witherspoon's Whiskey in a Teacup: What Growing Up in the South Taught Me About Life, Love, and Baking Biscuits. That was completely staged, plus now she has her own book club. I now know among other things that Reese likes monograms, drinks whiskey from a teacup, bakes biscuits and is from the South y'all.

Yes, but I am not sure if I'll be able to get to it soon enough for this--I did mark it want to read.

I have it but have other books to read first so let me know when you might get it, I have about 2 months on it if I renew it.

I'll put it on hold and suspend it until mid-August. I can have it up to 8 weeks if no one puts a hold on it before the first 4 weeks are up. I am going to friend you and if you help me remember in a few weeks with a PM that would be great (if you don't, that's okay, too).
FYI in the States it is called The Perfectionists: How Precision Engineers Created the Modern World
Ok great, looks like a book with a lot of info in it to digest!I'm starting to wonder what the next 'great' invention is going to be. I remember when plastics started to become all the rage, to become the ubiquitous material of the modern age until they found it killed all the fish and wildlife and now it's demonised.
Certainly now, looking back on 'the information superhighway' - remember that, people thought it was going to be all great, but never thought that too much information all at once all the time was going to be a bad thing.

That made me think of pantyhose. I remember when it first came out and we thought it was wonderful. Now nobody wears it.

Pantyhose was so much better than wearing garters, though!

I tried to explain garters to my granddaughter. I don't think she was quite picturing it. And those crazy belts we had to wear with the Kotex. Girls these days don't know how good they have it.

Yea, like what is a 'petticoat'. It sounds like something you would wear on top, not underneath your skirt.
Men used to wear suspenders, to hold up their pants.
Ok, while waiting to start Exactly: How Precision Engineers Created the Modern World does anybody want to read....Queen Meryl: The Iconic Roles, Heroic Deeds, and Legendary Life of Meryl Streep
It's published 2019 so should be easy to find

You need to show her a picture:). Pantyhose came out while I was a child, but I remember both.
For any young women or men here who have no idea what we are talking about, here are pictures:

Sanitary belt used with pads before self adhesive ones:
PS -- that sanitary belt plus pad was revolutionary for women and so very much more freeing than anything that came before.
um.. eek! What was before post-its. I suppose paper clips?
Where did the garters go? And when were tampons/tampax invented?
Selina wrote: "um.. eek! What was before post-its. I suppose paper clips?

I remember my mom telling about the rags that were used for periods before paper products.

Yes. My mother told me about rags too. Actually when I first started working at the nursing home the auxillary ladies made cloth pads for the incontinent people. We didn't have any disposable diapers and when we first got disposables we had to use them sparingly and only for certain people.
Selina, the pads had long tails on each end and you threaded the tails through the metal part. I don't know when tampons first came out but back in the day young women didn't wear them usually until you were older or married.

You are probably right!
You are probably right!
Oh, my grandmother used to tell a story about Kotex pads, so they have been around for a while. In my mother's area of birth and raising, there was an old farmer, never married, who had no idea what Kotex napkins were for. Someone told him they were horse bandages, so he bought a box. He went back another time with a different store clerk and asked for those really good horse bandages.I am sorry that I don't remember how my Amma told the story, but she made it really funny.
Kotex has been around since 1914, but apparently pads were first made by nurses in France from wood pulp bandages (for those not familiar with what this really is and are wondering how wood can be absorbant, wood pulp is made at pulp mills in preparation to make paper.) Not as good as cotton or things made later, but a start!
Wow, so the joke was on the jokester, I guess, because this story about nurses is true.

So is my copy! After Meryl's book I will then go on to Exactly.
Went to the library and picked it up..and started reading it as was waiting for covid vaccination next door. I got up to chapter 3.
Start a thread whenever you are ready Koren!
I have my other books to get on with at home so won't read all of it right away.
Ok I am ready to go on to Exactly: How Precision Engineers Created the Modern World soon.Karin have you got the book yet?
Selina wrote: "Ok I am ready to go on to Exactly: How Precision Engineers Created the Modern World soon.Karin have you got the book yet?"
I have the book and have started it, but have some books I have to finish and return before Sept 1 when the library fines start again (they were due 8/23 and 8/27). It's interesting, but not a quick read for me. The first chapter reminded me of Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time, but I have read more than that :)

oh goody
yes no rush
I felt a bit like that when I started it, that it was something I'd need to digest a bit more as each chapter was about something different and new that I hadn't read about before.

Yes, but also, I have only so much interest in this at a time. This is something I probably would prefer on TV although I would only watch it if my husband had it on and wasn't channel surfing too much.

oh ok...engineers = boring
I get it.
I know they are kinda. No women in this book either. They don't write about great inventions like washing machines or vacuum cleaners or stuff that REALLY changed the world.
Ok has anyone got another buddy read they'd like to start? This is so I can put a request in and it may be ready when we come out of quarantine..or could try an audiobook?
My library has lots of them in their memoir /biography collection online. It gives you how long they take to listen to as well. If your public library has Overdrive or Libby then it may have the same ones.
On my real bookshelf all I've got left is some books about Jim Jones and Jonestown.Does anybody want to read them with me?
These what I've got at the moment. Note - I have not read a book of anything about what happened before and this did happen before I was born so I am completely new to this.
The Road to Jonestown: Jim Jones and Peoples Temple
and
Cult City: Jim Jones, Harvey Milk, and 10 Days That Shook San Francisco

I do have Libby and Overdrive. I will give it some thought. Right now I am reading Go, Cat, Go!: The Life and Times of Carl Perkins, the King of Rockabilly if you are interested in that. I'm not sure yet what I will read after that.

Selina, I downloaded Is This Anything? by Jerry Seinfeld from Overdrive if you want to try that one. If not let me know and I can send it back and look for something different.
Aw I never watched Seinfeld.I'll have another look later and see if anything catches my eye.
I thought about starting one called Michael and Me: The Untold Story of Michael Jackson's Secret Romance but then thought I don't know if I can handle 10 hours of a fan who thought MJ was in love with her. I am supposing he had that effect on everybody...
Ok I found one I'd like to listen to and you might enjoyCarrie Fisher: A Life on the Edge by Sheila Weller

Your Hoopla or Overdrive must be different than mine. Mine doesn't have that book but I see the library does have it. I'll see if I can pick it up tomorrow but it might be a little while before I can start it as I have a couple others to get to right now and the Carl Perkins book is actually quite good. I will be working quite a bit in Sept. and Oct. so won't have as much reading time.

I've got a two week wait on the audiobook, someone's already got it out. Who knows how long it will be for the print copy though! I didn't see the Carl Perkins book available on audio when I scrolled through. My public library doesn't have Hoopla. Just Overdrive, Libby and BorrowBox.

I'm starting Last Chance Texaco: Chronicles of an American Troubadour by Rickie Lee Jones. I'm only to page 15 but so far I'm thinking this is going to be a good one. I don't really know who Rickie Lee Jones is besides the fact that she sang Chuck E's In Love.

Good news Koren. The Carrie Fisher audiobook is now available.I can start listening to it anytime - Let me know when you are going to start reading your copy.

Ok. Give me a few days to finish Last Chance Texaco. I don't like to read two of the same genre at once.

I have a little over 100 pages to go in Last Chance Texaco so should have it finished by Thursday. I was wondering if anyone would want to read a Marilyn Monroe bio after the Carrie Fischer book? I will look up the name of the one I have when I get home from work but I've been putting it off because it is sooo big, I know at least 500 pages, but we could probably do any Marilyn bio.
I'll see if there are any about Marilyn on Libby that I haven't read yet. Does your Carrie Fisher bio have photos/pictures in it? I'll miss out on those when listening to the audio.

Yes. 8 pages.

Yes. 8 pages.
I found this one as an e-book Marilyn in Fashion: The Enduring Influence of Marilyn Monroe. Not really a bio but got lots of pictures and I don't feel up to listening to another full on bio at the moment. (Plus I've already read a tonne of Marilyn bios over the years) . Can still discuss it though and you may have picked one I'd already read. Some of them were pretty hefty.
