Angry Man (I think he was a father) falls down into an abandoned cellar/basement and isn't found for a while, but does survive.

This was a book I read around 1988/89. I was young, but this was a novel. I thought the title was "A long way down" or something similar to that but I can't find any info online.
I think the friends/family of the man presumed him missing/dead and when he was found, he was quite sick from not being able to escape. He definitely had room to move around (wasn't buried).
The book took place in a rural setting and was not in modern times.
I remember him being an angry man/angry father.
