Questions & Debate > Which do you prefer? A beginning that is a little hard to get through, but pays off in the end, or a beginning that is fantastic, but isn’t as engaging at the end?

Alabaster | 159 comments I completely agree with you. Usually when I have a difficult time getting into a book, it's because it leads with an exposition dump, making it difficult to work through. The payoff of having a well-developed world and characters is well worth it though.

I totally agree too.

Lynne Stringer | 117 comments I don't tend to push through if the beginning is difficult these days. I want a book that grabs me from the start. I'm also not averse to stopping reading if the ending is difficult. So I don't like either of them.
