Katie | 5 comments Set in a fantasy world - this is a YA book. MC is hunting for a lost prince that they think was captured and put in the mines. He's found a couple of candidates and is trying to figure out which is the real prince. The prince has a tattoo but it's been burned off. At the end some fantasy creature pops up and tells the candidates a sad sad story and the prince laughs.

This one has been bugging me for YEARS. It's 20+ years old and a library borrow in the UK when I was in my teens (late 90s) so may be a little niche ;)

Becca (beccalikesbooks) | 5595 comments Beyond the Hanging Wall by Sara Douglass? I had a look at the Google Books preview, and the parts about the tattoo and the laughter seem to match:

Becca's suggestion of Beyond the Hanging Wall by Sara Douglass seems to match your description.

One Goodreads reviewer says: "Garth soon discovers that the Veins, as the mines are called, are the most dismal and appalling place imaginable. Imagine his surprise and horror when, while treating prisoner #859, he senses the Manteceros royal tattoo beneath scar tissue on the prisoner’s arm – when everyone in Escator knows that seventeen years ago the crown prince met his death in a tragic hunting accident."
