Glad you found your book, Alice. Here's the link for Nachelle's find - The Eye of Minds by James Dashner.
The story starts with a young man who spends most of his days in this VR (virtual reality) world because it's the trend. Players have a chip in their head that allows them to play whilst their physical them is in a capsule. The thing about the VR is that the brain cannot distinguish whether what is happening is real or simply part of the VR, and only the chip helps mark the difference.
This boy has got a couple of best friends (a boy and a girl, I think) and usually meets them somewhere in this VR.
One day, he receives the mission to save a girl from jumping off a bridge in the VR. He tries to talk her out of it, but she digs the chip out from her temple (gross, I know) and tells him to tell another guy "that he doesn't control her anymore".
She dies and the MC is in trouble/under investigation/ something similar.
