YA Reading Challenge #3: Ideas and Discussion

I really like the sections Lydia. Good job!
Here's my ideas so far:
Section 1: Read a YA book that is discussed in any of the Discussion Folders at Wild Things and has less than 50 comments posted in it's thread (go to any of the discussion threads and the books towards the end of the folder probably have the least amount of comments).
Section 2: Read 2 YA books that have a word that rhymes in the title (i.e. The Call of the Wild & All-American Girl: Call and All)
Section 3: Read a YA book that includes a "math" word in the title: add, plus, minus, subtract, divide, multiply, ect. (i.e. The Dark Hills Divide)
I can't really think of something for Section 4 yet. I was thinking some kind of Christmas book, but they are mostly shorter than 100 pages. I will keep thinking about it.

These are great Linda!
:) Thanks. If I think of anything else, I will let you know. I liked your examples also, so I was just trying to add to them.

Read a book with (3 books total):
-A subjective pronoun in the title (I, we, you, he, she, it, they, who)
-An objective pronoun in the title (me, us, you, him, her, it, them, whom)
-A genitive pronoun in the title (me, mine, our(s), your(s), his, her(s), its, their(s), whose)
...thinking of more.

Section 1:
~Read one of the group reads chosen during November, December, or January.
Section 2:
~Winter is cold…read something with a word that has a synonym of cold (as it pertains to temperature). For example: chilly, frigid, cool, icy, etc.
~Read a book with the word "the" in the title
Section 3:
~Read a book whose title has the same number of letters as your age.
Section 4: (those websites are too fun!)
~In honor of Red Planet Day (November 28), read a science fiction book about space travel.
~In honor of Sandwich Day (November 3), read a book with a food-related word in the title.
~In honor of Teacher Appreciation Day (December 7), read a book about a teacher or that has "teacher" in the title.
~In honor of Underdog Day (December 15), read a book where the main character has some kind of triumph.
~In honor of Clean Off Your Desk Day (January 8), read a book that you own but haven't yet read to get it off your "desk" (bookshelf).
~In honor of Inane Answering Machine Day (January 30), read a book with an unnecessarily long title.
It's scary how much fun it is to plan for these challenges.
Those all sound good Michelle! I really like the one you have for Section 3 (above) and also the Section 4 tasks.

Great ideas from everyone! I am already excited.
Michelle, I like the Clean off your Desk day idea!
Section 1: Start a new discussion in any thread (in other words, pick a book that hasn't been talked about yet).
Section 2: Pick a book with non-English words in it (I notice a lot of Middle Eastern books do this), and tell us if it hindered your ability to understand the book.
Pick a book that is about a writer (the main character can be a writer, or the book can be about other writers/story tellers).
I don't have any ideas for Section 3
Section 4: Pick a book that involes the celebration of a holiday you (the reader) don't celebrate. (ie: the Brits amongst us don't celebrate Thanksgiving, or the Americans don't celebrate Boxing Day etc).
I love everyone's ideas!!

I think for the celebration category I might even put up polls so that people have choices of which they might want to do.
Misty, yes, I think the point system will be the same. My current outline has a reading between 6-7 books for each section. Some tasks may demand a comparison (read 2). The first 1-2 tasks will only require one book. The 25-pt. task will involve a minimum of 2.
The person who gets to write the 50-pt. question will need to design it for 4 books like I did. I think the most fun will to ask them to do the same as Linda Grace asked me -- try to integrate the topics. That could produce some fun!
:) I agree Lydia. I really liked the way our current challenge came together... with the point values for the tasks and the 50 point question. You had mentioned maybe having a prize for pages read. If so, we will have to decide if we are going to use the top GR page count or actuals and if we use actual page counts, what about audiobooks?

***I'm not sure if that made sense...it's late here *yawn*
That did make sense and that is what I think as well. That is what we did for the first YA challenge, so hopefully it won't be too confusing.

(a) If you have not added to the Top YA Novels thread, this would be a good time.
(b) If you have not contributed your thoughts about a great book relevant to one of the genre threads, this would be a good time.

I would like nominations for November celebration themes you might like to have a task named after.
I will post a poll for voting on the themes which are submitted between now and October 4th at 11:59 PM EST. You can assume the U.S. holidays are included (Columbus Day and Halloween). I would appreciate if someone from Europe would let me know of any established holidays I should include in the exemption.
The week after we will do November.
So, what "wacky" celebrations for reading might we want to relate to our reading of YA books?

Lydia, did you mean November now, and December the following week?

Oct. 5th - Child Health Day (maybe a book about sickness or healing/healers?)
Oct. 12th - Farmer's Day (animal related?)
Oct. 15th - National Poetry Day
Oct. 17th - Sweetest Day (love story)
Oct. 22 - National Nut Day (That one can be open to interpretation of the word "nut"! haha)

Unfortunately, I'm looking at November when the new Challenge would start, so do you have some other suggestions?

We might be able to do something like that for our ongoing challenge.

Fiona, we were thinking about doing an ongoing challenge. I think a new folder for ongoing challenges would be good. That way people don't get it confused with the Official Challenges.
Lydia, go ahead and open a poll to see if people would like to hold off on the next Official Challenge until January and start our ongoing challenge November 1. Once that is decided, I will open a poll to see what kind of ongoing challenge everyone would prefer to do.

I think "Linda Grace's Ongoing Challenges" would be good. I think if we end up doing something where it is a different topic every month, I will want to post 1 thread for each month just to differentiate. How does that sound?
Okay thanks!
I think the only topic I will need to "sticky" (if I understand that correctly to be the threads that will be always be listed at the top of the folder - cute word by the way) will be once I get the rules up and an ongoing list (that I will add to) of each topic we do, so everyone can see the past topics in one place.

Did we decide if we were going to start Challenge #3 November 1st? Or do we want to establish an ongoing challenge and start Challenge #3 in January?

I think you can go ahead with starting the ongoing challenge.
I have not seen enough interaction and interest to suggest a poll -- although, Fiona, if you want me to do one, I will.
Otherwise, I'm thinking the YA Challenge #3 will start January 1st.
I will set up a poll then for the ongoing challenge and will include one choice for jumping stright into Challenge #3, just to get everyone's opinion if that's okay with you.
Looks like November 1 we will be starting our ongoing challenge: A Monthly Challenge that relates to one of the off-beat celebrations/observances for that month.
I will set up a poll shortly for which November celebration we will use for our first task.

Lydia, did you see everything I set up today? Let me know if everything looks good, or if you think I should add something.
Books mentioned in this topic
The Call of the Wild (other topics)All-American Girl (other topics)
The Dark Hills Divide (other topics)
Catching Fire (other topics)
Speak (other topics)
I will be working on YA Reading Challenge #3 with Linda Grace and Misty (hint: she'll probably be designing Challenge #4). I have an outline for this challenge and need your input.
Like #2, this challenge will have 5 sections. Since school is back in session and the holidays are coming, the theme is adapted from my blog: "Reading, Writing, Arithmethic and Holiday Celebrations"
Section 1: Reading
I would like to retain the first section from YA Challenge #2: YA Official Challenge section, selecting books based on the Wild Things threads and GoodReads book lists. But I would like the tasks to be a bit different. Any ideas?
Section 2: Writing
For this section, the focus is on language. For example, read a book written in a non-narrative form; read a book with a place in the title; read books with a proper noun (person's name) in the title.
Section 3: Arithmetic
All number things are game. For example, read two books with a consecutive number of words in the title, e.g., Speak and Catching Fire; read a book with a number in the title.
Section 4: Let's Celebrate!
Since the challenge would run from November 1st to January 31st and I've always loved the different designations for months (National Pickle Month?), this section would have readers looking for YA books that include some relevance to celebrations during this time. For example, November not only has veterans day, Marine Corps birthday and Thanksgiving, it is also Native American Heritage month.
Section 5: 50 point question
To be selected by the point leader by December 15th.
I would like to offer prizes to the readers who complete the reading, writing, arithmetic, and celebration sections first (no double dipping); and a major prize to the overall winner. I might even be able to offer a prize to the person with the highest number of pages.
So, I invite you to let the ideas flow!
Thank you to all who participate.
