My first novel, The French Baker's War has been released this month. Of course, it's historical fiction, about a baker in occupied France in 1943 who returns home to find his four-year-old son in the street, his wife missing, and a Jewish escapee hiding behind the display case.

Very exciting!!! Will be looking for it. :)

Thanks for the warm welcome Janice. Not sure my book is suitable for kids, unless they are late teens, because there is death and destruction, as you would expect in history!

It's now available on Chapters as a KOBO.

That is so exciting for you!!! I will wait until it is in paper form as I don't read online. :) If it's not too much trouble, please keep me updated. :)
Hello
My name is Sarah.
I wanted to join this group as I have a place in my heart for historical fiction and I am also hoping to read more of various time periods as well as connect with like minded readers.
Regarding time periods I am interested in reading about; I will admit I tends to read more in regards to European history particularly around war of the roses and the Tudors but I am hoping to also expand my reading to other time periods and settings.
I am still in the process of thoroughly learning my way around therefore I am still in the process of finding all the books I have read at this point. Along with reading historical fiction and nonfiction; I also read romance and fantasy therefore I prefer to read across genres.

Welcome, Kate. This is a great group for finding new interesting reads!

Introduce yourself for the first time.
Re-introduce yourself for the 10th time."
Hi all, I'm an avid historian, researcher, genealogist and author of historical fiction. Typically I'm interested in 18th & 19th C stuff, but if my interest is piqued on a subject, I will read and research it! I'm really hoping to immerse myself in discussions, so feel free to say hello.

Hi Ashley, sorry to hear of your distress. Glad you're back!

Good luck! What time period and location are you writing about?
Hello Everyone! I'm Henry. Happy to be a new member of the group. I'm a native Texan currently living in Brazil. Looking forward to meeting other historical fiction fans and maybe get some inspiration for the novel I'm writing. Thanks!

Hello Maria! Thanks for the book suggestions. "Measuring the World" looks very interesting! I enjoy books about that time period.

Hey Henry, good to have you aboard!

I love browsing book shelves in thrift stores and we have excellent ones here that are run by a hospice organization. I probably have more books on my "want to read" list than I will ever be able to read.
As for my Goodreads Challenge, I am 70 books into the year which is actually the number I read the total of last year. I've set my goal for 100 although I may have to up that if my currently pace continues.

Welcome, Maridele! This is a wonderful group for historical fiction recommendations.

I am late to the re-introducing post!
My name is Trish and historical fiction novels are my absolute favourite reads. I read other genres as well but, the books I end up loving the most and reviewing the highest are historical fiction novels!
I have my own book review blog - www.turningpageswithtrish.com- that I try to post on regularly but, I also make sure to post my reviews on Goodreads too. I love this community, I love reading everyone's reviews. I am not always good with staying on top of the messages from the group, but I always look at the list of books being read!
Thanks for allowing me to join this group!
Hello Trish! Welcome to the group!

Dealt with some of that in my last novel. St. Louis was a busy place then, the 4th largest city in the US. Many of the rail lines were small-- sanctioned by the state. Chicago was a major rail hub. There was no bridge across the Mississippi at St. Louis until later, so, like seven different railroads converged on Illinoistown (Now called East St. Louis). Everything and everybody was then ferried across the river. The original cliff face that protected the city from the floods had been altered into a levee, with tracks that ran along the top, you had to cross those to enter the city proper from the east. But goods could be loaded and taken to points around the city. The Pacific railroad was the train going west, by c. 1865 it had been completed as far as Kansas City. That depot was all the way out on 14th & Chouteau Ave (but connected to the waterfront by the interurban line). The other rail line was the St. Louis & Iron Mountain, completed to Pilot Knob c. 1858. Their depot was in the south end at 2nd & Plum. By 1860, two trains per day of high quality ore were being shipped into St. Louis, smelting and iron manufacturing became big business (before that, they were shipping the iron by wagon to St. Genevieve, then to New Orleans by boat. Riverboats were big time, steamboats traveled up and down both the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. The St. Louis harbor was busy. One trip from St. Louis to Ft. Benton would pay the cost of building the boat. In addition, flatboats were a big thing. They would be built from green wood up river, then carry payloads downstream. After reaching their destination, they would be sold for lumber and the process would be repeated. National archives have lots of period maps online. Or, check out my novel, Gilding an Age (by Kurt Burke).

Hi Madeleine! Just jump in if a particular book or topic piques your interest. Some discussions act like a book club and discuss mutual reading. Others are authors, reviewers or publishers trying to promote their work. But overall it's a great place to make connections and express yourself, so welcome!

I'm Irene, and I review for the Historical Novel Society. By day I teach English as a Foreign Language on a freelance basis. I'll read just about anything in the genre except historical mystery (just not my cup of tea). But I love colonial North America and the early US republic. I'm one of those aspiring writers, too :).

Anyway, I hope I'll get some recommendations here or give one or two. Thanks for having me.

Welcome, Maggie! Hope you discover some interesting reads here. I'm a Senior Citizen and like you most of my friends in high school (the 1960's) were not readers :)

Hi and welcome! tips hat

I'm into literary fiction - historical, period-piece stuff, victorian, 18th, 19th century. I like mystery/horror/sci-fi/fantasy stuff too. Not into YA!! I've been recently trying to write a review for most of the stuff I read. Looking to add some friends here, so feel free to add me!!

Welcome!
I like those genres too. I'm pretty new to historical fiction, I'm still finding out what era I like best. I'm reading Outlander now, which I'm not sure is really historical fiction, but I'd think so? And I like sci-fi too!

I'll read pretty much anything from any era, as long as it has a strong female lead. Looking forward to some great conversations and recommendations!

I’m somewhat new to historical fiction, having been a longtime fantasy reader who recently decided to expand my horizons. I’ve been a history buff for most of my life, so why not? My primary areas of interest are the Ancient World and the Early Middle Ages, but I’m open to trying authors who write about almost any era. So far I’ve read and enjoyed books by Mary Renault and Steven Saylor, and I’m planning to read some novels soon by other authors who have piqued my interest, such as Colleen McCullough, Bernard Cornwell, Manda Scott, Michelle Moran, and Simon Scarrow.
Looking forward to chatting with you all here, and discovering new books!

THanks, Chris

Synopsis: A young man travels back in time and joins the 1871 Hayden Expedition as it explores the future Yellowstone National Park, facing the perils of an uncharted wilderness while falling in love with a Crow woman.

I am in my 50s and I live in eastern Washington State - a red county in a blue state. (We had 100s of people protesting the governor putting out mask mandates for school children.)
I love crosswords, Godzilla, James Bond, mystery, space opera, romance. My favorite historical eras are WW I, period between the wars, and historical fiction rotating on scientists, women, etc.
