I thought the topic was different for Austen in that it's about the development of basically a health spa. Use of the setting has helped her poke fun at people in inventive ways hitherto unseen.
Consider about Diana, "The words unaccountable officiousness, activity run mad just passed through Charlotte's mind." But of course, she said something polite and quite different. Thank you Jane for describing what was actually on Charlotte's mind!!! It was just what I was thinking myself.
It's unfortunate the novel did not reach completion because the character of Arthur Parker would have rivaled that of Mr. Collins for being a most hilarious dimwit. I read the part twice where he overindulged in his ailments.
I would have loved to see what became of Sandition.

Me too, Heather. I'm just grieved over it. I really would have loved to have read this novel and see where Jane would have taken all the plot particulars you mentioned! I'll warn you the PBS Sanditon miniseries is a bit of a shocker because of where Davies took some of the storylines that seem to be decidedly un-Jane Austen like. I did like trying to identify which Austen movie some of the costumes came from- the costume designers reworked several pieces from former films or tried to design the costumes with a nod to former Austen films.
I read the book The World of Sanditon: The Official Companion by Sara Sheridan which was interesting but haven't seen the actual tv series. I was really only interested in the parts about Jane Austen and the Regency period.
