My dad is going to drive up tomorrow morning and give me a hand. So should get it sorted thankfully.

Kristie | 19136 comments Peggy, that's always my fear with needing a knew e-reader. I have so many books on there I'd hate to lose any.

Good luck with your repairs, Sarah. And good on you for deciding that you want to go away by yourself for Christmas. It can be difficult to make decisions like that and do what we want instead of what others expect of us. I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time.

That's a great idea - a vacation for Christmas.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Sounds wonderful, Sarah!

Hilariously, this article appeared on my twitter just after I read about your holiday - https://theconversation.com/sex-on-th... (science research article, but may not be safe for work)

Scientists, spoiling everyone's fun.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Oh my, we have been ruining the planet in more ways than we thought!

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I know, right!!

I also so wish I was a fly on the wall when that academic in Adelaide was in a faculty research meeting pitching that topic for funding.

message 1608: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Lol, right. That was probably something to see.

message 1609: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Lol!

I got my new ereader. I feel a bit ashamed. It automatically added all my kobo books that I haven't read yet. I know I buy a book there every now and then, but I didn't realize I have 122 unread ones..

message 1610: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19136 comments They add up quickly, Peggy! I have way too many unread books too, and in every format.

message 1611: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Yup, got way too many paper books waiting for me too. But at least they're actually always there. Apparently, my ebook ownership is some sort of black hole.

message 1612: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19136 comments Yes... out of sight, out of mind?

message 1613: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Haha Rusalka, I don't expect I'll be adding to the damage lol Topical with the transgressive dune fields as I'm off to watch Dune at the cinema this afternoon. First time at the cinema for 2 years!

Managed to fix my headlight so that's a relief. Dad's can be very useful!

message 1614: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I have over 200 Peggy. I'll never finish them, especially at the speed I'm reading now.

message 1615: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments There is something comforting in the thought that if you could never buy new books anymore, you have enough to last you a lifetime ;-)

message 1616: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments It's so easy to buy electronic books isn't it? Just touch the screen, non of this pesky walking to a book shop, trolling the shelves for what we want, queuing, carrying it home and finding a space in your own shelves- It's addictive 😀

@Sarah - I've always wanted to experience Christmas in a hotel with no family obligations, bliss!

Lol well just in case, be mindful of the lizards/plants ;)

I really hope you enjoy it! I've heard many varied reviews of Dune. My brother went to the movies last weekend for the first time since summer 2019/2020. I got a phone call afterwards for another reason, but the verdict was "That was really weird..."

message 1618: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19136 comments Recently saw Dune. It was strange and confusing and actually only half a movie. Apparently, they are making a second movie, so there isn't really an ending for this one. I think maybe if you've read the book or series maybe you'll know what's going on right away and enjoy it more, but I haven't read it so I had to figure out the politics of that world and who was who as we went. Hope you enjoy it, Sarah. Have you read it?

message 1619: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I heard last night from a friend, that there are another 2. The first two movies based on the first book, and the last set on the second book.

message 1620: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19136 comments Oh, I didn't know that. I just know that there was a scene and the characters were about to go somewhere and then it ended... knew there had to be at least one more. It's kind of like the Lord of the Rings in that way.

message 1621: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Ahhh yeah, I am very glad I know that now before watching. Sounds like that is important information.

message 1622: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments But can I just say, as a movie consumer, not a movie maker, that if I sit in the theatre after a movie and go "... ummm?" that is not good.

If I as a consumer have to google a whole heap of things or talk to friends who have googled things, to understand your movie, that is not good.

I would have thought this is self explanatory, but seems not lately.

message 1623: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59883 comments I think the first movie I'll go see after almost 2 years is The House of Gucci with Lady Gaga.

Kristie | 19136 comments Janice wrote: "I think the first movie I'll go see after almost 2 years is The House of Gucci with Lady Gaga."

I want to see that too.

message 1625: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19136 comments I completely agree, Rus. When I go to a movie I generally want to be entertained. I don't want to have to do research. Some movies you go into knowing it will make you think or that you'll learn something, but I don't like that feeling of "what's going on?"

message 1626: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I have read the book. I didn't realise going into the film that it was 2 parts so that was a bit annoying. I spent most of the film trying to work out where they'd end it. I did love it though. I love the Dune world generally, it's pretty awesome. Loved all the space ships, fremen technology etc Some good casting too. I didn't realise Jason Mamoa was in it :-o But yeah, you shouldn't need to have read the book to understand it. It's pretty close to the book though. I just bought a print of litany of fear (the poem of sorts that they repeat a couple of times about fear) to go on my wall along with my yoda quote. I really should get back to the book series, I own all of them, also the ones that the author's son did too set in the same world. It was pretty quiet at the cinema which was good.

message 1627: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm surprised we don't have a audiobook thread. Or is there one? I can't seem to find it.

I've come to see the perks of audiobooks and my worry that I wouldn't be able to focus is unnecessary. Well, at least as long as I keep busy at the same time, but with simple things like walking, running, cooking, cleaning.

I've looked into subscriptions and there is so much choice. I like audible because there's so much available, but I don't need to own the books and I think it's more expensive compared to some others.

I've also looked into Storytel and KoboPlus. Both give you unlimited access to ebooks AND audiobooks. The downside is that the choice is more limited (but still huge), The plus side is that they also have Dutch books to choose from. Storytel doesn't allow you to read ebooks on your own ereader. So I could only use it for audiobooks. With KoboPlus I can read the ebooks on my ereader as well. However, Storytel has much more books that are interesting to me available than KoboPlus. Decisions decisions. I'm going to do a trial period with one of them as soon as I finish my current audiobook.

Also found Chirp, to snatch up a good deal every now and then.

message 1628: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19136 comments Peggy, Audible also has a Plus catalog, which are free to you if you are a member. There are over 10,000 books available and you can become a member for just the plus catalog for a monthly fee.

I don't know how good your library system is there, but I get a lot of audiobooks through my library system. They have an app you can download and have quite a good number of books available.

I know some people use Chirp as well, but I haven't looked into that one much because I already have so many between my library and Audible.

message 1629: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Thanks Kristie! I didn't know that, I thought it was just that one credit so you can get one book a month and that's it. I need to take a better look.

Haven't checked libraries for audiobooks, but did for ebooks. I read mostly in English and that tends to be quite limited here. I don't expect it to be different for audiobooks. More likely even worse ;-)

message 1630: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Not sure on the Dutch collection, but Lexx uses Downpour as an alternative to Audible. I am not sure if he's found the others you have, so I will clue him up! Glad you've enjoyed your first audiobook!!

message 1631: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19136 comments Yes, they changed their offerings. I don't know if it's exactly the same for you. For us, there is an offer of $7.95 per month for the Audible Plus catalog only or it is included for free with any other membership. I'm not sure if you can see it, but this is our catalog: https://www.audible.com/search?&a... The offerings do sometimes change, so books may come and go, but they have some really good books and they tend to stay a long time.

message 1632: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Thanks Rus, hadn't heard of that one yet.

@Kristie: ah, I was looking for the collection but couldn't get past the main page. The link works! There's no Dutch audible so I guess I'd have to use the US or maybe UK version.

message 1633: by Margo (last edited Nov 17, 2021 09:54AM) (new)

Margo | 11628 comments There are plenty sources Peggy but for me doing audio only audible is the best for value and selection. As you'd be paying in euros, you'd probably the UK site better value.

They have a deal at the moment that you should check out, it's 99p for the first 3 months, then £7.99 per month after. I can't seethe terms on this PC as they keep telling me I already have an account.

Margo | 11628 comments Hmm, maybe we could have a thread for audiobook deals, or just deals?

message 1635: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Thanks Margo!

There is a thread for deals in general :)

message 1636: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments You can also pause your subscription occasionally. I do that when I end up with way too many books to listen to.

I advise you to read the books, Kristie. I remember the two other versions of Dune. They were probably just ad not-understandable as the new one, especially if they are making a follow on.

I do not think you really get a good handle on the story line until about the third book though. The first one is a good story but like a lot of series, it is hard to understand the characters and the fantasy world until a few stories are under your belt. I can remember reading them over and over as each one came out. At least you do not have to do that. ;o)

message 1639: by Cherie (last edited Nov 17, 2021 06:38PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I don't think we have an audiobook thread here on YLTO, but there is a whole group on GR dedicated to audiobooks. I used to be a member, but it was too hard to keep up. I think the closest to an audiobook thread is the What have you purched?" thread because there are so many of us posting audiobook purchases from Audible.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Completely unrelated to the above.

Getting my bees tomorrow!! I have taken the afternoon off work, have to drive 45 mins to the place. They will walk me through the hive, show me my queen, and pack it all into my brood box and seal it up. I then have to drive 45 mins home with THOUSANDS OF BEES in my backseat.

Will keep you all updated.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I'm not sure if this will be more or less terrifying than the time we caught a feral cat in our fox trap and had to drive it to the RSPCA to be put down. That thrashed against the cage for 2 mins straight and then spend 30 secs staring me down in the rear view mirror as I drove. And then start again. I have never had such a long 8 min drive, was convinced the damn thing was coming to kill us both.

Bees seem less overt than a feral cat, but probably bigger risk.

message 1650: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments A few days ago I went to buy fall bulbs, and it is so late in the season that the last bit that was left was 50% off. I do not confirm nor deny that I then bought the double amount.

Anyway, I planted half of them yesterday and plan to do the other half today. Tulips, daffodils, alliums, sparaxis, hyacinths. I planted some tulips and crocus last year and they grew beautifully. I like to plant these where I can see them from inside, since they grow very early in the spring, when it is still cold to be outside. I plant summer flower plants near the grill and outdoors dinning table, where we can see them when we spend more time outside.

So looking forward to spring already!
