Wow, Katrisa. Sounds like a challenging group. The pandemic must have something to do with it. You know how kids get very difficult when their parents are getting divorced, or any other situation at home that make them stressed? The pandemic might be too much for kids so little. Who know what is going on in their little heads. Hang in there! We are here for you to vent, and also to discuss books, of course. :)

Saar The Book owl | 2648 comments Hi, there! How is everyone? It has been real quiet here :(

message 1355: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments Doing well, Saar! I didn't even notice, but it really has been quiet in this thread. I'm out of town, taking my mom to get her knee replaced today. We'll be leaving for the hospital soon. Hoping all goes well.

How are you doing?

message 1356: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments I'm doing well thanks 😃

I'm super relaxed at the moment due a Sound Bath on sunday topped up by some yoga and meditation yesterday. And was very happy to hear yesterday that my Aqua Fit class is back on 5 days per week from today. I hope I'll be able to there at least one a week depending on the situation at home.

I might have a lot at to wait a week or so though as I managed to give my forearm a nasty burn yesterday while I was cooking dinner. It stung a lot at first but then calmed down when I put aloe vera on it. When I woke up today I was shocked to see a dirty great blister there! It looks horrible!! I put a dressing on to keep it clean. It's a little bit soar but nothing like as bad as it looks but I don't know how chlorine will affect it.

@Rus - I checked with the pool and they haven't upped the chlorine to combat covid, good thought though 😉

message 1358: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments So I woke up this morning to the house shaking and rattling for about a minute. I thought it must have been a small earthquake we get every now and then.

Turns out it was a 5.9 magnitude one that was 500km away. 190kms from Melbourne which sustained some damage (which they do not need after the past 2 years). Minimal damage, and no deaths which was a concern as our last big earthquake was in 1989 and was an 5.6 which killed some people. So great news.

That was an interesting start to the day. And good lockdown distraction.

message 1359: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments OMG Rus, that must have been scary! If we had any kind of earthquake I'd be a nervous wreck. Poor old Melbourn :(

message 1360: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments We live next to the main highway in the city, which is really quiet to be honest. Usually I wake up to earthquakes that are around 2-3 magnitude from our windows rattling and have to think "truck or earthquake?" If the windows rattle, it's usually an earthquake. And I am literally talking about every 2-3 years.

Today I woke up to it and it was more than usual, and it was just so long! The scary thing was when I saw how big it was and how far away. For us, it was a bit bigger than normal, but that's usually something that's happening 100km away. The fact it was that substantial here but SO far away was worrying.

For context, distance from the epicenter to here is roughly the same as -
Cork to Belfast.
Brighton to Leeds.
Amsterdam to Luxembourg.
New York to Washington DC.
Ottawa to Toronto.

I saw this in the news, and thought it was far from you, so I didn't pay too much attention! Amazing how you still felt it.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Same here Sandra. I immediately thought of Rusalka. I think she's nearest to Melbourne of the Australian members, but I figured far enough away not to feel anything.

message 1364: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments I've just been readingin another group that it's no longer possible to post links to sites outside of GR. This is GR response to growing number of spam posts. It is being likened to using a sledge hammer to crack a walnut but apparently FB is taking the same approach. Such a shame, some of our best challenges have used links to other sites.

I believe the only ones not annoyed by this are the spammers who continue merrily posting links!

message 1365: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments There's been a bit of talk of that too in the help thread for interactive tasks. Some people in this group experienced issues, others (me included) can still post links. At least, still worked yesterday.

It's weird.

message 1366: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I hope they find a better way of solving the spam problem than cutting this feature.

It worked for me when I tried earlier today, but who know for how long.

message 1369: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Lori reported in the Interactive Tasks thread that links to Amazon no longer work (I can hear the money talking), and that some one had tried to link to a goodreads help thread and that was blocked.

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Idiotic.

Never fear, I will find ways around this for randomiser challenges!!

Also, I would be watching this very closely if I was FB. From how my friends and family use facebook, this would cull a lot of people already on the fence about using that platform.

Saar The Book owl | 2648 comments @Kristie: I hope the surgery goes well for your mum and she recovers soon.

@Margo: that sounds so good for body and mind! That's a nasty burn you've got. I hope it'll heal well.

@Rusalka: I immediatley thought of you and if you were safe. It seemed to be a big earthquake. A couple of years ago we had one in Belgium, a light one, but still light enough to get me tumbled out of bed in the night.

Hm, I don't seem to have problems with external links.

I'm doing fine. I've started my degree for vet tech last week.

Kristie | 19137 comments Glad you were safe from the earthquake, Rusalka!

Thanks, Saar. Mom's surgery went well. She is still in the recovery area of the hospital because they had no rooms available for her, but she spent the night there and was able to walk down the hall to the bathroom today. She is expected to go to a rehab facility closer to her home today or tomorrow (at this point, it is likely tomorrow). They are again just waiting for a bed to be available.

In the meantime, I have been running a few errands for her, buying her a few things she may need when she gets home, doing some cleaning, and now I'm about to cook a few meals to freeze for her so she'll have something that's easy to heat up. I'm hoping to gather all settled into the rehab tomorrow because my flight home is planned for Saturday.

Congrats on starting your vet tech program, Saar! That is excellent!

Glad to know she is doing ok, Kristie. It is amazing how fast is the recovery now for knee replacement. My grandma had both replaced at different times, but it was more than 20 years ago, and the recovery was certainly slower.

message 1378: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments Yes, it's amazing how quickly you are able to get up and walk. They want you to do it right away because it helps the recovery process.

Janice (jamasc) | 59884 comments @Rusalka - that was an awful wake up call. I'm glad there were no fatalities.

@Kristie - glad to hear your mother is up and getting around.

Re: the link situation, you can still link. You just can't use the "a href" coding.

I arrived home this afternoon and immediately had a nap. It's been a roller coaster this last week. I had another angiogram and more intervention is required. I'm really hoping this will fix the problem and that 2022 will be a better year. I'm ready to get off this carnival ride.

Best part of the week was that we had an impromptu family reunion. My sister is home from Hawaii, she picked me up at the hospital on Monday and sat in on the consultation with my neurosurgeon. After the appointment, we went to my dad's and my brother came to join us. We went for a hot dog roast out at a campsite at the lake. We got kicked out! Can you believe it. Apparently the campsite is closed for the season, but the gate was open and the website said it was open. Fortunately, we had just finished eating when the camp ranger came along.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Awesome, Janice!

My middle sister had major surgery on her right arm and shoulder yesterday. (She fell on their deck after a weak board gave away. She broke both bones in her arm just below her elbow and disclocated her shoulder.) Her husband just had an abdominal hernia repaired on Monday. My youngest sister (that had her hip replaced) called me last night to tell me that the surgery went well. My BIL was using her as his phone - I cannot think of the name. She called the rest of us on the west coast, any way. My BIL will not let the rest of the family come over to help because they refuse to get the Covid vacations.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I'm fully vaccinated as of yesterday. I cannot express how happy I am about this.
One of my brothers got his first shot on Friday, another brother got his second today. I know this just mitigates the illness, but my god this is welcome and a long time coming.

Still have another 3 weeks of lockdown though, but I won't be so worried getting milk anymore.

Lol now that is a way to sell the vaccination to those of us who are lesser endowed ;)

They are pushing the *cough* problems *cough* the males of our species are experiencing after contracting covid as an incentive for vaccination in the past few days over here.

message 1397: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Sep 26, 2021 08:23AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Now I'm thinking about it. I don't know why they haven't thought of this sooner.

There was a nationally successful driving behaviour change in Aus after an ad that had a whole heap of women waggling their little finger at men who were doing dickhead dangerous things in cars.

And it entered the culture, and people stopped doing stupid things in cars as others insulted their manhood through a finger waggle.

I saw that. The most made up link to someone you know, ever. I mean, I do that for comedic effect, but I always throw a goat in so you know I'm taking the piss.

Why I saw it was the press conference from the Health Minister in Trinidad after they spent a day making sure her claim was bullshit. I have never seen a more diplomatically annoyed Caribbean man.
