I've heard a couple of prices of $3500 on houses double my size, so I'm hoping I'll get a lower quote. If I can get it under $2000 (with the cash back offer), I'd be sorely tempted.

I don't have that many windows so I'm not keen on blocking off a window for one of those window AC's. My neighbor has one and I can't peek in his window any more - just kidding.

Roz | 4528 comments I feel for you guys out west. Such high temps is so unusual for you. We've had a heat wave here on Long Island (NY) too, in the mid 90s F (feels like 100) with high humidity during the day and "cooling" to mid 70s at night. It's the humidity that makes things so uncomfortable. We have 1 air conditioner in the living room downstairs but haven't put in the ACs in the bedrooms yet so we've been using a table fan at night. At least there's a breeze (warm breeze). They say it should break in a day or so. In the meantime my house is a sauna. Lots of cold showers.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments We've been considering AC in the bedroom for some years. There are only a few nights a year when it's too warm to sleep there (although two years ago it was a couple of weeks!), but many nights when AC would make it more comfortable, so I think we would use it regularly in spring and summer.

One of the reasons we haven't done it yet is that both a friend and my brother in law could do it for us, which is cheaper. But we're afraid that when we're not satisfied or something, it could influence the friendship/family relations. So we prefer to let someone we don't know do it, but then we're afraid the friend or brother in law might feel passed by.

message 1104: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4528 comments We have a window AC unit for our bedroom that we can install ourselves and have done it every year (in, in the summer then take it out in the fall when it cools off). But this year we decided not to do it because we're selling the house and the window it would be in faces front and would take away from the look of the property. Lame reasoning, I know. Sacrifice comfort for appearances.

One of the local tourist groups posted videos of baking cookies in a vehicle. He had a black truck and he closed it all up at 9am and baked cookies at 1pm.

Yes, I’m becoming used to applying for refunds for cancelled travel I now have 2 travel vouchers from cancelled flights. I was refunded most of the Norway trip thank goodness because it was a biggie.

message 1107: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I was refunded for most of my Norway trip. I have a travel voucher for my share of the deposit, but it's not likely I'll use it. It was a "seize the opportunity" trip. I think my sister is going next summer, but I want to go see her new home more than I want to go to Norway.

message 1109: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Happy Canada to my fellow Canadians! I'm starting off the morning by drinking a maple flavoured coffee in honour of the day. :) It's quite tasty considering that my taste buds are all wonky.

It's a balmy 22C /72F with an expected high of 30C/86F. There's actually a nice cool breeze. It was 30C/86F inside this morning, but I've opened windows and got the fans blowing. It's cooled to 27.5C/81.5F and I feel comfortable. I've apparently acclimatized somewhat because I'd be feeling hot if it was 27.5/81.5F in my house.

message 1110: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 3029 comments Happy Canada Day 🎉🇨🇦🎉 I am totally envious of your 22-30C Janice. Yesterday was 40-46 in Fort McMurray (depending on exactly where you were), and it hit 39C at the campground in Cold Lake 🥵 So, I’m hoping that maybe it will back off today 🤞

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments Happy Canada Day!

It is a fabulous 21 degrees here today. I have all the windows open and I am enjoying the breeze. Such a relief.
Hope it is cooler for you today Jenn, we had 2 sweltering days here and then the temperature dropped and the breeze was cool instead of hot.

message 1113: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I hope you get some cool temps, Jenn! I'm sitting upstairs in my recliner and feel very comfortable. Yesterday, I could barely tolerate being upstairs long enough to use the washroom. I was outside this morning, watering my begonia and deadheading it. Yesterday, I couldn't breathe outside.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Happy Canada Day, Janice, Jenn, Dawn, Esther and TrudyAn!

It is a cloudy 23C here today. It was about the same yesterday.
We are supposed to get a little warmer in the next few days, but more normal to what we are used to with cooler nights down in the 12C and 13C range.

I am looking forward to our July 4th holiday over the weekend. I am off of work Friday and Monday.

Saar The Book owl | 2650 comments I hope things will cool down a bit. It was on the news and in the news papers. That weather is unbelievable! I don't understand that there are people who still denies climate change...

message 1116: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2650 comments I've got a book related questio, so I don't know if it fits well here:
I've got a bunch of books in PDF - format, but I hate reading on the computer or laptop. Are there e - readers where you can read PDF - versions on? I don't know anything about e - readers :(

message 1117: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments My kobo allows pdf reading. Its not as good as epubs, it's a bit clunky. But it works.

message 1118: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Works on my kobo too. But as Rusalka says, it's not as easy to navigate.

There are also programs to change the format. I used it to change from kindle files to epub, but I'm not sure if you can do the same with pdf.

message 1119: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I have been having some issues with pain. I started developing strong reactions to one of my medications. When I stopped taking it the problem I was taking it for returned only worse. I hope you all are well. I hope to be back. Right now I have good days and bad. More good then bad now.

message 1120: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I'm sorry to hear that, Renee. I hope you get better soon. Sending positive thoughts your way.

message 1121: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments Renee, I echo Sandras words. I hope they can sort out your pain.

My contributions to the group may be limited for a while. Also I might not make a lot of sense (!) as I'm very tired and stressed. My mums parkinsons has got really bad. She's had a really tough year with family illess and death - a sister, a brother and a great gran niece have died so far this year, plus she had covid in february - it's all taken a toll.

We are getting tons of help from the medical service but shes not always very cooperative! We want her to remain at home so our house is turning into a mini hospital. My daughter is suffering from depression so we are really struggling at the moment which doesn't help anything. I keed telling myself how lucky I am to have this time with my Mam.

message 1122: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Margo, I admire your strength and your positive thinking when facing this challenging moment. I'm being completely honest. I hope things settle soon. I'll pray for you and yours. We'll be here for you when you need support or just a break from life. Huge hug.

message 1123: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Margo - What Sandra said! Hugs from here too.

Renee - I hope the doctors can get your pain meds sorted out to give you some relief soon.
Hoping more “better days” than bad for you.

message 1127: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Thinking of you guys, Margo. It's been a pretty full on year for you guys and your Mam. Good on you guys for looking after her as best you can, and I am sure she very much appreciates it, even when she's being difficult.

Sorry to hear your daughter isn't doing great at the moment too. Sending you guys lots of love and thoughts, and hope things get a little better for you soon. Or at least a couple of good nights sleep.

Don't worry about us. We'll be here whenever you need. Check in if you can and let us know how you are going. You know you have a massive support group here who are after the best for you, so let us know what you need. *hug*

Kristie | 19138 comments Renee - I hope they are able to get your pain under control soon. This has been quite the battle for you.

Margo - So sorry to see your mum isn't doing well. Nice that you are able (and willing!) to help her like you are. I hope your daughter is getting help as well and her depression lifts soon too.

Shirley | 1505 comments Thinking of you Margo. Take care.

message 1130: by Grainne (new)

Grainne Coughlan | 1297 comments I hope your Mom starts to listen and feels better soon. My Dad had to change his lifestyle quite a lot when he was diagnosed with Parkinson's a couple of years ago. He is now retired and has settled into somewhat of a routine. He takes advise from the local health personnel and support personnel and visits the doctor regularly which is a blessing. I hope that she can find some relief soon and that you can too.

I hope daughter is feeling better soon too.

Renee, I hope that you can find a way to manage the pain so that you can enjoy life a bit more each day and get back to doing more things that you enjoy instead of hospital visits (even though those are important too).

message 1131: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5191 comments Renee and Margo,

My thougths are with you, Margo. I can only say what a strong person you are, but don't forget to take some time for yourself too, so that you won't break.

message 1134: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments Thanks for all the support guys. Until I joined this group I wouldn't have believed that internet friends and e-support could ever have meant so much to me. Since mum has become housebound, I pretty much have too and these days Visitors are not a thing so the majority of my interactions are with medical people re my mam or my late uncle. This is by way of an explanation for my being such a whiny, wuss lately 🙀

message 1135: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 1505 comments Definitely not whiny, Margo. This group sure fills a need in this crazy world. COVID-19 has had devastating effects, and because it is shared globally, I think it’s brought us all closer. We share the pain! And we are all such nice people🤪

message 1136: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments It doesn't sound like whining to me, Margo. You're expressing the difficulties you are facing. There's a lot on your plate.

message 1137: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Not at all Margo!

I finished grading my last student assignments yesterday. I've just got a couple of meetings and team drinks today and tomorrow, and then I've got 5 glorious weeks off!

message 1138: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2650 comments Don't think you're whining, Margo, because you're absolutely not.

@Peggy: waw, 5 weeks off! Enjoy :D After this week I've got 2 weeks at work left and then 3 weeks off :)

message 1139: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Yes, one of the perks of working in education :) I've got the same weeks off as the students: 5 weeks in Summer (students actually have 7-9, depending on whether they have any resits), 1 week in Autumn, 2 weeks for Christmas, 1 week in February/March and 1 week in May.

message 1140: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Enjoy your weeks off, Peggy. Do you have any travel plans. or has travel opened up in Europe?

message 1141: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

message 1142: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Great, Peggy! Enjoy!

message 1143: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Haha, I will enjoy!

We're going away for two weeks end of July, but staying in the country. Travel has sort of opened up here but it was very uncertain for very long and now it's still a bit unclear with all countries having their own rules and regulations regarding testing and restrictions. And now there's talk of the Netherlands going red on the map again, making it even more complicated and uncertain. So way too much hassle and stress for me..
