Saar The Book owl | 2650 comments Thanks, Grainne, I hope so too :)

Saar The Book owl | 2650 comments How's the weather where you are all living? I'm in desperate need of some sun and a bit warmer temperatures in Belgium! It's summer, but it feels like autumn, with temps around 20°C Lots of rain, storm...I even got birds searching for grain in my garden again...

message 1053: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Such difference Saar! I'm not that far from you I think, but the past few days have been okay. There has been a bit of rain every now and then but mostly sunny and warm, but not too warm. Wednesday and thursday will be colder and rainier (17-19C)

message 1054: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2650 comments We had a couple of weeks ago a heatwave with +30°C, but then it dropped 10°C Also a lot of thunderstorms...It's strange when you hear what temps they have in Canada, US, Siberia...
Yes, we're not so far from each other :)

message 1055: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments I'm in BC, Canada and we're in the middle of a heat wave. Breaking records for hottest day every recorded.
I would love to have rain and 20 degrees. Supposed to be 44 today with lows of 23 overnight.

message 1056: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments We had a couple of cold and rainy weeks, but since yesterday it is super sunny and hot. 32C/90F right now. It is suppose to stay like this until Wednesday.

message 1057: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments It's too hot for me. It's 33C (91.4F) right now. Last night, when I went to bed, it was 34 outside and 31 inside. I slept downstairs where it's cooler. We're supposed to get to 38C (100.4F) by Wednesday. This is the cold north where anything about 25 is considered hot.

We're just a bit cooler than Dawn, next province over.

message 1058: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2650 comments Waw, these are big differences! Send some of the warm weather to here :) I hope it cools down a bit soon.

message 1059: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19138 comments We like to be different here and use ℉. It is sunny and about 90° (32℃).

message 1060: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Good luck to all of you in heat waves! We had a couple of 35C days too. Night temps stayed over 20C which made it hard to sleep. Luckily it was much colder soon after so our bedroom cooled down too. I generally don't need rain and temps below 20 in Summer, but it has the advantage of getting the house cooled down again.

message 1061: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments It's 36C in Grande Prairie right now, and 29C in Honolu. I'm texting my sister and she's shocked. I think I should jump in a plane and go visit. At least I can cool down in the ocean there. And the trade winds keep you feeling a bit cool.

message 1062: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I know the feeling! It has happened a couple of times that The Netherlands was the hottest place in Europe! Hotter than Spain, Italy, Greece.. that's insane.

message 1063: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments We have had two days at 114F and 115F here in Hillsboro. I have no idea what it is in C - just let me say, WAY too HOT. It is 1:05am and has cooled down to 22C. Tomorrow is forecast as 34C hi with a 16C low.

I have been watching your temp up there too, Janice. Your low right now is 24C. Your height tomorrow is projected as 41C and 40C on Wed. Looks like you are getting what we just went through. We can deal with the low 30Cs as long as it cools down to mid to low teens at night. I didn’t do anything except keep hydrated and listen to audiobooks all weekend and today..

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I've been really worried about you guys in the north west part of North America. It's looked crazy hot, even for us. I mean, 46C in British Columbia??!?!?!

Look after you and yours. Put water out for the wildlife. Take lots of cold showers. Not a positive start to your summer, but here's hoping it's a blip and not a trend.

message 1065: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5191 comments It is not too hot here, Temps are around 25-30C, it is the humidity, close to 100%, that was killing me. It felt like I could swim in my house. It is 90% now and it feels nice. Eurk.

message 1066: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments Oh you guys must be melting! I can't take anything above 26C, lucky for me we don't really do summer here (Ireland). It is 20C here at the moment and sun is shining - unusual :-p

It's very worrying that so many of you are getting these insane temperatures. Stay safe!

Oh no, humidity is harder to deal with than heat! I can't imaging what you're going through :-(

That's 46C, Cherie.

It was 30C (86F) in my house this morning when I woke up and 20C (68F) outside. I've got the deck door open and the fan on full bore trying to suck some of that hot air outside. But that's a losing battle. It's to get to 41C (106F) today. Thank goodness I can hide out in the basement where it's a few degrees cooler.

This is when I really feel the loss of being able to drive. I can't jump in the air conditioned car and go for a drive. I'm not even sure my car will start since it's been started since Apr 10th.

Any idea when you'll be allowed back at the wheel Janice?

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments My vision is gradually improving but my next appointment with the ophthalmologist isn't until October. He will be the one to determine when I can drive. If I think it's improved enough before then, I will call his office and ask for an appointment.

If I only had to look straight forward, I could drive now. But those pesky intersections where I have to look right and left would be tricky. And I'm not sure about backing up.

message 1071: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments The heat is on the news here too. I read somewhere in Canada it was 47.9C! Stay safe (and cool) everyone!

I'm glad to read your sight is improving Janice. I hope you'll be allowed to drive before October.

I think that was Lytton in BC. They just set an all time hottest temperature for Canada. According to the news, Las Vegas has never been that hot.

Though, Lytton is typically the warmest place in Canada anyway. It is a bit of a desert. They have a welcome sigh that says "Canada's Hot Spot".

message 1074: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments Stay cool Janice. I have to say that I didn't move from my chair yesterday evening except to get more ice packs to put on my head and chest.
Made it through Magic Mike, The Lost Husband, and the last 5 episodes of Shadow & Bone on Netflix. Just did not have the energy to do anything else!

message 1075: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Yes, Lytton, that was it! It also said that the heat record was broken by 3 degrees which is a lot, but the previous record was also higher than I would have ever thought possible in Canada.

message 1076: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments I have been to Lytton in the summer, it sucks in general. Way too hot. But yesterday must have been ridiculous. I feel like rubber shoes would have melted on the pavement.

I remember the 2001-2002 summer in Rio de Janeiro (I remember because it was the last summer we lived there) it was so hot that it burned your feet to walk on pavement with just flip flops. You have to use shoes with thicker sole. It was crazy.

Oh, this made me laugh so hard. It did not even occur to me to GO OUTSIDE and try it.

@Janice - trying to blow all of the hot air out of the house in the evening has been a loosing battle here too. Although the outside temp got down to 62F, it was still over 80F in the house. It is 94F outside and 87F in my hallway. I need a couple more fans, but there are none to be begged, borrowed or bought in this part of the USA. Two of my box fans gave up the ghost. Fans will be on my Christmas list this year!!!!

We used to do that all the time in summer when I worked at the Science Museum. What's scary is when you put a frying pan in the car and crack an egg in there.

I've slightly melted thongs before, but that sounds intense. We have the tar on our streets melt frequently.

But I was going to say remember if you won't walk on it, your puppers shouldn't be. We have huge problems here each summer with dog's feet getting burnt from the roads and footpaths when owners take them for walks when it's too hot.

message 1089: by [deleted user] (new)

I feel for you all that are melting in the heat right now. I love the hot weather but only if I have a pool or the sea to jump into when the mood takes, air con and, of course, a cocktail or two (or three) within very easy reach.

Last year, over lockdown in the UK it was so hot we ended up buying a portable air con unit. Although very noisy, pop your earplugs in and it was positively arctic in the bedroom.

Animals really struggle with the heat. Especially, as you have said Rusalka, when walking on the pavements/footpaths.

message 1090: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 1505 comments We had to cut our holiday short because the day before we were due at Magnetic Island, the whole area was locked down due to an infected person travelling there from Brisbane on a weekend holiday. We moved very quickly to rebook our flights to get home ASAP. Quite embarrassed for our government - the infected woman worked in a hospital and was UNVACCINATED. Oops. Major stuffup.
Feeling for all of you suffering in the heat. I share your pain. We’re in our winter now and getting a few months of cooler weather. Maximum is around 21 degrees Celsius.

message 1091: by [deleted user] (new)

Shame about your holiday Shirley but at least you managed to get home without any issues.

message 1092: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 1505 comments Too right Kathryn. Imagine if we’d arrived for our holiday and then it was locked down. Our rules would then have us in 14-day isolation on our return.

Oh no!!! I am so sorry, I have been thinking about you with the Queensland lockdowns. I didn't know you were heading up to Magnetic Island. Hope you have some good books for lockdown back home.

Lol 21 degrees. Winter lol. ;) This is the reason you live up north and I live in the Australian version of a fridge. We have nothing on our Canadian friends though.

Would you have to isolate at an approved hotel or could you have isolated at home?

message 1095: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 1505 comments Pretty sure we’d have to isolate at a quarantine facility. Only approved individuals - football players or international movie stars are allowed to isolate at home. NB sarcasm.

Yes Rusalka, always plenty of books to read.

In Canberra, if you are returning traveler you can quarantine at home. Even if you're not a sports person, politician, or Nicole Kidman. Be interested in what your rules are.

Yes... to the Covid chat. It has been an eventful day in Australian politics in the world of covid. We have multiple clusters all over the place, and politics has turned into a real cluster#*$&

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Shirley, didn't you have to cancel your trip to Norway when Covid first hit? I had to cancel mine and I remember someone else in the group had been planning on going a month ahead of me. I'm sorry this trip was shortened.

Katheryn, I'm considering getting AC. Costco is offering up to $1500 Cash Back Cards. I think I should call and get an estimate. I was saying to my friend last night that we only need AC maybe one month a year and wondered if it was worth the expense. She said, it will be a benefit to have AC for resale and we're only getting older and less tolerant of the heat. If it's too pricey, I will look at a portable AC.

I think if you can afford it, it is worth it. We looked at having AC put in properly but felt that the expense and upheaval of doing it, outweighed the number of days we would need to use it.

Our portable one does the job as downstairs during the day does stay quite cool.
