Watcha' Doing - 2021
Moral to the story is to be careful of these things. Mum had to have plastic surgery 5 years ago on her thumb from a mandolin incident. I think it's less impactful (yay lots of room on a thumb) than when I took the top of my left pinky off a few years ago with a Swiss peeler, but much more annoying finger.I was reading the instructions about using the guard to protect my hand when it happened. Distracted and ironic.

Oh geez, Rus! Ouch, but also the irony... lolThanks, she is staying here so there is extra cleaning and prepping, etc. Need to get the spare room ready and such. Worth it though.
Rusalka wrote: "I was reading the instructions about using the guard to protect my hand when it happened. Distracted and ironic."Sorry, but that made me laugh a bit.
A friend of ours chopped the tip of her thumb off a couple of years ago while cutting a pumpkin. She had to have stitched and then it didn't heal properly afterwards. Ever since that happened to her I'm always super careful when I have to chop dangerous foods like pumpkins. I'm also always the one to use the grater, as Rob has no patience to do it slowly and carefully and will easily grate some of his own skin off.
Good luck with the final preparations Kristie! Having someone come to the house sounds like an excellent idea.
Sounds like a painful way to get rid of fingerprints, Rusalka.Hiring someone to stay with the menagerie sounds like a great solution, Kristie.
Janice wrote: "Sounds like a painful way to get rid of fingerprints, Rusalka."See, that would have been useful!! This is the stupid fleshy bit on top with no fingerprints (well, not the standard bit).
I'm the same Peggy, anything sharp it's like I need to offer a piece of flesh to some god. Usually it's once and it's appeased. Just this one and the swiss peeler where nearly doctor level. And possibly could still be.
Clean like the wind, Kristie! I always find cleaning for the relevant sitters the worst. Clean before you go away! urgh
Rusalka wrote: "Clean like the wind, Kristie! I always find cleaning for the relevant sitters the worst. Clean before you go away! urgh"Yes, I like to have the house clean, but of course this is extra because she's staying here. Of course, I'm leaving a couple of days before Craig, so who knows what condition it'll be in by the time she gets here. lol

Thanks, Sandra! I can't wait to see everyone. :)
Great photo Abby!Ouch Rusulka. I feel your pain. Many years ago, I was carving a pumpkin with a knife. First time I think. Anyway, pumpkins are hard. And I slipped with the knife and sliced into the top of my finger. Bled so much but no major damage. I didn't need stitches. But I could see all the fatty tissue which was a bit grim. Hope your finger heals quick. I bet it will be sore for a bit. Haha, just read Peggy's story of a similar incident! Clearly happens often.
Enjoy your road trip Kristie.

Ohh... lol
I'm so glad so many people have done this silly thing. Looks a bit better today than what I expected. I wrapped it in a massive bandage today so I wouldn't knock it and allow it a few hours to heal. It was the most distracting thing in meetings today. Although I was able to give Mickey Mouse level thumbs up when required. It was a weird day.

You just have to get the angle right and boom! No more fingerprints. :) My weapon of self-mutating is the potato peeler. I'm honestly surprised I still have fingertips from how much I cut myself on that thing.
I cut pumpkins in front of my kindergarten every year and now I am imagining all kinds of horror! And lol, Rus about mickey mouse level thumbs up!
I am super excited right now because we just put an offer on 5 acres of land. My hubs has been a farmer the past 10 years but on leased or borrowed property and so we are always worried about losing it and we can't always do what we want. In fact the field we are using right now belongs to a developer and they are going to build after this season, so we had to figure out something to do about it.
We live in the city and the land we are trying to buy is about an hour and a half away and is nice and flat but right at the base of some beautiful mountains. I have fingers crossed that everything goes ok with loans and whatnot - but if it does we may finally have our dream of owning our own farm by the end of July :)
Thanks everyone! We grow a lot of different things. A lot of garlic and onions and shallots but also eggplant, tomato, cucumber, melons, corn, cabbage, kale, chard, spinach, peas, summer and winter squash and TONS of peppers because we like things HOT! - it's like a whole grocery store! I eat well in the growing season! But it has kinda ruined me for out of season produce. I just refuse to eat tomatoes from the store - they are like hard pink tasteless baseballs, lol!
Katrisa wrote: "Thanks everyone! We grow a lot of different things. You’re right about supermarket fruit and veg - just not the same as fresh from the farm.
I look forward to the start of summer. There's a working farm not far from my house and they grow everything either at this location or another one the family owns further out on Long Island (NY). They had a sign out that said they're open. Yay! Can't wait until the corn is ready.
Katrisa wrote: "Thanks everyone! We grow a lot of different things. Last year I had only four tomato plants, but the tomatoes were so delicious! I couldn't remember when was the last time I ate tomatoes so tasty. I remember in my childhood the tomatoes we bought in the weekly street market used to taste like this, but not anymore.
We harvested the first radishes last week and they were way better than the bought ones.
I can't wait to harvest from my vegetable garden too. The radishes were so good, but May was a cold and wet month, so everything is behind with growing. I'm making slowly the transistion to go from food out of the supermarket to more biological and more natural food. I've found a litle shop nearby that sells everything right from the farm: fruit, vegetables, meat that isn't with antibiotics and stuff...and for other things I go to the bio - market.
The past few weeks I'm bouncing off my chair from excitment, nervousness and so much more. Most of you remember me posting about my cat Spike who passed away and very strangely, partly because of him the decision to make a career switch came easier. I'm an animal lover, always have and always be, and if I had the brains, then I would've become a vet, but life makes strange curves and bows...So, at 38 years old with a family and a job, I registered myself to get my bachelor's degree at the university (I don't know how to say that in English) for veterinary assistant. It's a longer study, because it focusses on persons with a job and a family, but the studies and the courses are the same. You study mostly at home, but every Friday you've got classes and the degree is the same as a 'normal' degree. I've got butterflies, but I'm so terribly nervous, because I have courses that I know that would be difficult, like anorganic chemistry. Like Pippi Longstocking would say: 'I've never done it, but I think I can!'. That's going to be my new mantra.
THAT IS SO AWESOME SAAR!! (I think this deserves capital letters). I'm sure you'll do absolutely amazing. And very brave I think, to make a change like that.
CONGRATULATIONS, SAAR! I agree this deserves capital letters! It's normal to be nervous and anxious, but I'm sure you will do better than you think, because you love this, and made a conscious decision, and will do your best. I do not doubt you will excell at this!
Congrats, Saar! That's excellent! It's never too late to make changes in your life and make your dreams come true. I'm sure you will do well in your studies because it is something you want and a goal you have set for yourself. You've got this!
Waw, thanks, everyone, you all make me blush and smile at the same time :)It's summer vacation now, so schools are closed, so I'll read as much as I can, beside work and family, before the start mid september. I think my reading time will be very low after that.
Haha, and a colour book apparently, for students, where we have to colour the nerves, bones, muscles, etc....

It may not always be easy but i am sure it will be worth it.
Thanks, Shirley, I loved Pippi as a kid and that's one of the quotes that I'll keep remembering. I even say it to my son when he say's he can't do this or that.

We hired someone to come to the house and stay with our mini-zoo for a couple of days. I'm really hoping that it works out. It will cost less than sending them all to the kennel and it is really convenient. It does leave me with a little extra to do, but that's ok. We didn't think the puppy was ready to be left in a kennel yet.
