Siddharth Seetharaman | 19 comments Thanks Sara, Lynn and Bob! I will check out the challenges in the buffet and the bingo and see what I can join.

I have read Sense and Sensibility in the past and really liked it! It's been many years though, so I may just get started on that one. Thanks!

From Austen to Dickens, each book feels like a journey back in time, full of rich characters and vivid settings. Can't wait to dive into discussions and swap thoughts on these literary gems with you all!"

message 1108: by Soren (last edited Jun 25, 2024 10:49PM) (new)

Soren Hello,

My name is Soren (It is pronounced and written like the owl in legends of the ga'hool.) I live in belgium, the dutch part. Pardon for the weird/bad English => I am doing the best i can.

I have always loved reading. I remember as a child, that I envied my older brother for his ability to decipher these weird signs in books. Thereforth, I was so motivated, that I could read at the age of 4. My reading level was level 9 (the highest) after only 2 months.

I did not read many classics, since my first love was fantasy and science fiction. However, while maturing I found the love of "prize books". I made myself some challenges and read many of the award-winning authors of my country. Some time after that I fell in love with the booker prizes.

I LOVE randomizing things. That's why I have decided to participate with the BINGO challenge!

If you have some questions, or need some recommendations on dutch authors, i'm your guy!

Connie | 12 comments Welcome, Soren!

Could you recommend me a few Dutch authors/ books to read? Anything, classic, pieces of work that are worth reading even if they are not the easiest/ most liked books. I am curious to read more from Dutch authors.

Well I can give you some very well regarded authors. However I don't know if there are English translations to be found of all books. (and what the quality is of those translations.) Most have a French and German translation, since we speak those three languages in Belgium.

In no particular order:

Jeroen Brouwers(Always has great topics, likes to disobey the dogmas in life)
RIJNEVELD MARIEKE LUCAS (she/he won the booker int prize, so def translated. The discomfort of evening is great, but not for the faint of heart.)
Erwin Mortier (while the gods were sleeping is amazingly written)
Hugo Claus (most well-regarded classic author)
Mulisch Harry (discovery of heaven is a classic, didn't read it.)
Herman Koch (Quick fun reads, with a literary touch.)
Hubert Lampo (classic Belgian Magical Realism)

message 1116: by Caleb (new)

Caleb Berry | 3 comments Hello everyone,

My name is Caleb, and ever since I was about 8 I've always been mildly obsessed with reading the classics. It all really began when my parents bought me a dozen 1$ paperbacks of stories like The Secret Garden, Huckleberry Finn, Oliver Twist, and The Time Machine.

Since then, I've read many other classics, as I feel there is a reason they've stood the test of time and provide a lot for us to glean from. But I've also gotten more into Sci-fi, fantasy, and YA in recent years. Now, I would really like to get back to my roots and read more classical literature, so I'm open to any and all recommendations this group can send my way as well as participating in literary discussions

Mbuye Hi, I'm Mbuye, a retired civil servant, and I am able to enjoy reading more now that I belong to the leisured classes! I do love classics, but also like to read literature and history, though not exclusively. I read books from all countries, and am a fan of Asian, African and European literature, classical or modern, but this depends on whether translations are available.

I do look forward to being a part of the group!

Mbuye Thank you! It's a real voyage of discovery for me. At the moment, I'm reading Balzac's serial novel, "Lost Illusions' and Friedrich Dürrenmatt's 'The Execution of Justice,' both European novels, and utterly different in every way you can think of!

Welcome, Nida. I glanced at your TBR and can recommend
21st century A Gentleman in Moscow
20th century Rebecca
19th century Anna Karenina large but worth it.

Finally, one that is not on your TBR but is being discussed by the group from now till the end of the year is Les Misérables

Again, welcome.
