Hello everyone, I'm Rouge from Canada. Thank you for starting a club for classic book readers!

When the local library was closed during the early pandemic days, a friend suggested reading E-books from the Project Gutenberg site. They're mostly older classics, no longer under copyright in North America. I read Middlemarch, The Turn of the Screw, and now I'm reading Crime and Punishment.

Welcome Rouge. I am glad you chose to read with us. There is a thread we started last year in Chit Chat that might interest you about resources for books:

Cara (cj12037) Hello hello! My name is Cara and I’m checking in from rural Maryland. I’m 30 and run an illustration and paper goods shop with my husband. My reading tastes vary but I do love a witty memoir, whimsical novel, or thoughtful nonfiction. In between work and reading, I’m usually in the vegetable garden (starting seeds now for a new season!) or watching British game shows. I’m looking forward to moving back to my home state of Virginia in the next couple of years and putting some elbow grease into an old house near the blue ridge parkway. Thanks for having me!

Viola (biolorabiolo) | 11 comments Hellooo! My name is Viola, I'm from Italy and 21yo. Catching up on classics is something I've been meaning to do for a while but could never find the motivation for, so I'm really happy I found your group!

My favourite classics at the moment are Pride and Prejudice, The Importance of Being Earnest, Lisistrata and Sostiene Pereira.

Cara--the old house in the Blue Ridge sounds so delightful. I LOVE the mountains and old houses are the best. Good luck with the project.

Allison Hartley (allisonhartley) | 1 comments Hey everyone!
My name is Allison, and I'm a high school senior in California. I just started getting active on Goodreads because I figure it's better than other social media, and I'm trying to get into a habit of reading for fun before I go to college.

This is the first group I'm joining; I'd really like to work my way through some classics and various books from my shelf. I'd love to add some friends and get to know people here! Currently, my favorite books are Beloved and Grapes of Wrath :)

message 72: by Jenny (new)

Jenny | 3 comments Hello everyone. I’m Jenny from SC. I’m 38 and have been in love with reading and the smell and feel of books since I was a child. The Scholastic book fair was my favorite time in grade school. GEEKED OUT puts it mildly for how I was back then. Dipped my toes into King in high school but my first introduction into classics was Pride & Prejudice and A Tale of Two Cities in 10th grade. I’ve had a strong love of Austen since. Just a girl (woman...when did that happen?!?!?) over here trying to catch up on all the classics I’ve never read or some I’ve never even heard of. Public school did me no favors in that regard.
So...happy to be here with you all and have the opportunity to learn, share, discuss, and dive deeper into what gives me the greatest pleasure.

Welcome Jenny. I also fondly recall the Scholastic book fairs when I was in grade school. Reading is one of those hobbies that retains the wonder it offered from childhood.

Welcome Jenny. I also remember the Scholastic book fairs. It would always take me forever to choose from among the books. My public school education was much heavier on classics than yours and I wonder if today's students get any classics at all!

Rob Gray | 3 comments Hello all! I’m Rob from SoCal. I was once an enthusiastic reader but only read a few books one could call literature since I left school and went into my trade. On a whim, I read a copy of Thomas C. Foster’s book on reading literature and realized I was missing out on a lot. I love history, so I decided to start with making my way through classic works, important speeches, essays, and historical documents. It’s been so enjoyable that I thought joining a group focusing on similar works of fiction would be fun also. I’m looking forward to reading and discussing them with you all! Coincidentally, I just started The Portrait of a Lady the other day.

Welcome Rob! Always nice when you can come back to something you love. I have always found that a love of history and literature go hand-in-hand. Lots of choices on books to share here, and don't forget that you can always look for a buddy read if there is a book you want to read that isn't a group read. Enjoy The Portrait of a Lady.

Archana Devdas | 1 comments Hi, I'm Archana. So glad to have found this group as Classics have always been my favourite genre and the most read for me as well. message 92: by Lisa M (new)

Lisa M Hi everyone,

My name is Lisa, I'm 36 and I live in New Zealand with my partner and two maine coon cats.

2020 was my worst reading year ever, I think I read 1 book, I started several but didn't finish them. Reflecting on my reading history I've realised that it's not really the number of books that makes me happiest it's getting to the books "I've always meant to" read i.e. classics. Even if I only get to 12 books this year if they are 12 I have always wanted to read by Barbara Pym, or Elizabeth Gaskell, or a massive Russian novel then I'll be happy. Too often recently I've succumbed to hype and read something really unsatisfactory. Classics and back-list is where I'm happiest :)

Looking forward to chatting with you all - Lisa.

Eva Gerald | 17 comments Hi, everyone!

I'm Eva, and I'm a 55-yo living in Los Angeles -- no kids, 3 dogs. I've always been a reader but found I was reading less as Facebook and similar social media occupied my attention. Well, for a number of reasons, I quit FB, and whaddayaknow, I'm reading lots of books again.

My preference is literary fiction, so this is definitely the group for me. I do a few "fun" or light reads in summer (mostly sensational biographies), but pop fiction usually just disappoints me. I'm looking forward to getting suggestions from others who share my taste in reading.

Heading over to the Bingo Challenge now -- that looks like a lot of fun!
