Darya Silman (geothepoet) | 118 comments Hi! I'm Darya. I mainly read nonfiction, but after finishing Coming Up for Air by George Orwell, I remembered how to enjoy reading without waiting for new information to settle in. Just linguistical delight in its purest form. I'm Russian with a degree in Slavic (read: Russian) language and literature, so I have read almost all Russian classical literature (War and Peace at least 3 times). I had a year course in world literature, and I'm familiar with some basics. I am currently very slowly re-reading English-language classical literature in English and want to re-read Estonian classical literature in Estonian (since I was born and live in Estonia). Got through some of Shakespeare's works:) I totally disliked 'Wuthering Heights,' but my fav book from age 15 was 'Jane Eyre.' My favorite book of all time is 'Lolita' by Vladimir Nabokov. I read in Engish, Russian, and Estonian but write reviews in English

message 691: by Chris (new)

Chris | 94 comments Happy New Year everyone! I have been on GR since 2010 and it has taken me quite awhile to navigate through the site. Each year perhaps adding something new and am still learning things (I am not an intuitive computer person)
Anyway, I have been a member of another classics group that focuses on the Western Canon and find I often can't keep up with that group and they read a lot of philosophical classics which I struggle with, SO I am looking for an additional group with a more diverse palate. I also joined Dickens and Thomas Hardy focused groups within the past two years.
At 69 y/o, it amazes me that I have missed reading so many classics that seemed to be a part of most people's education either in HS or college. I am slowly trying to rectify that. The past two years I managed to read 1984, Brave New World, Fahrenheit 451, The Little Prince, Beowulf, & Tom Jones. With the Dickens group: A Christmas Carol, The Signal Man, and Dombey & Son. With the Hardy Group: Tess of D'Urbervilles. Other classics: Dracula, The Black Tulip, Dead Souls, Poldark, King Solomon's Mines and a few of the Sherlock Holmes stories. Boy, as I list them, I think "not too bad".
Look forward to reading with you. Going for The Haunted Hotel this month.
