Oh, wow. I thought the loss of taste and smell was unique to Covid!

Jason Oliver | 3050 comments Just want to share what I have been told concerning COVID. I work closely with the hospitals in my area through Coca-Cola.

I have been told that if its possible, the Moderna vaccine seems to have milder side effects than the Pfizer vaccine. I was told the Pfizer vaccine causing some side effects similar to COVID symptoms.

Has anyone had a vaccine and can comment on the side effects?

message 53: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15582 comments My sister had the Moderna vaccine on Tuesday and has nothing more than a sore arm. Ditto those who work with her (in healthcare)

Another sister is being vaccinated with Pfizer vaccine on the 12th. Now, she's special needs but her social worker and nurse will let me know if hse has any side effects and what they are as I'm her guardian. I'll share what I hear and learn.

annapi | 5505 comments I've been slowly getting my smell and taste back the last few days. Things still aren't back to normal, my favorite tea tastes blah, like sugar water, but at least most food tastes somewhat normal, if not as delicious as before. The phantom smoke smell comes and goes.

Overall condition is still the same, though breathing was a teeny bit tight this morning. My next appointment at the center is on the 14th.

annapi | 5505 comments I have gotten into the habit of asking the kids if they smell smoke, just to figure out if it's my phantom smell or not. I've also gotten used to my daughter's pitying look and gentle amused reply, "No, mama, you have Covid."

message 61: by Anita (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 9288 comments Lol, Anna. I know I shouldn't laugh, but your daughter is terrific!!

My husband had no adverse reactions to vaccine #2. He said about 10-20% of folks at his hospital are having flu type symptoms after shot #2. Mostly younger people because their bodies mount a stronger immune response to the vaccine . . .

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8425 comments LOL, Anna ... having met your lovely daughter on Zoom, I can now picture her saying that to you!

But I'm with you ... better to ask if anyone else smells it than to ignore it, because - GOD Forbid! - it could be an actual fire.

@Anita ... Good to know about vaccine # 2 .... did he get Moderna or Pfizer? My brother got Moderna # 1 so far ... I think he's slated for # 2 NEXT week. He had a very sore arm from # 1 ... enough that it woke him because of discomfort, but he just took some ibuprofen.

message 63: by Anita (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 9288 comments My husband got Pfizer. Also got a very sore arm, but in the scheme of things it seemed like a small price to pay lol.

message 64: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12933 comments One of my patients took the moderna, while every single one of her coworkers took the Pfizer a week earlier. She said none of them had a symptom at all, and she had two take two days off. The chills, jont pain, serious headache, soreness, the ringer. She says she's going to have to take a day off for the second shot.

message 65: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 5766 comments That's interesting, I had heard the opposite, that some people had more issues with Pfizer. I imagine it varies by the person.

Yikes! I hadn't thought of that. That makes me worry - what would I do? I live alone. I'd either be constantly worried there's an actual fire, or I'd be constantly ignoring it - and what if there was!? I guess I'd have to rely on my smoke detector?

Tessa, I thought the Moderna vaccine was only one shot. I thought that was one of the benefits of it (in my mind, anyway!).

message 69: by Anita (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 9288 comments Both Moderna and Pfizer are two shots. J&J is testing a single shot vaccine.

message 70: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 5766 comments Maybe AstraZeneca is one shot, I thought there was one someplace in the world already.

message 71: by KateNZ (new)

KateNZ | 4101 comments Astra Zeneca is two shots as well. Best results reported to come from a half dose, then a full dose.

Karin | 9236 comments Robin P wrote: "That's interesting, I had heard the opposite, that some people had more issues with Pfizer. I imagine it varies by the person."

Yes, because some people are actually reacting to the weakened/dead form of the coronavirus (I have NOT read up on what is used) rather than any of the other ingredients.

One of my adopted brothers actually had to have 2 small pox vaccinations (he was at the very tail end of getting those) because he didn't react at all to the first one (usually you got one of those "boils" with them that left a scar), but some people got quite sick with those even though it was weakened cow pox. Once the risk of dying from the vaccine was higher than the risk of getting the disease, it stopped being given.

Interesting. Most vaccines require more than one, but one would make things easier if it really works.

I don't understand how, for the very same virus, there could be some one shot and some two shots, but then vaccinations are not my field.

I wonder how I missed that in all the talk of the vaccines. Anyway, thank you for the info!

message 75: by Anita (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 9288 comments These vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna) do not use a weakened form of coronavirus. They are a new type of vaccine called mRNA. You can read how they work on the CDC website.

annapi | 5505 comments I think I'm over this thing, except for still testing positive yesterday. For the last 4-5 days or so I've felt perfectly normal, including smell and taste. No more phantom smell. And this morning I finally dared to try my Scottish Blend tea, and was excited that it tasted as good as ever! LOL the only problem is now my appetite is back and I haven't really lost much weight from having Covid, only 5 lbs so far, darn it.

I'm not going to bother getting unblinded from the study - to do that I would have to get on a vaccination list somewhere, and my doctor does not offer the vaccine. And anyway, having actually caught Covid means I will have antibodies for at least 3 months, so I would have to wait that long anyway. But for the study, I was told that we would be unblinded when they report the findings of the study, and that could be in the first half of this year. I will still continue to participate for as long as they need it for data collection.

That makes sense--I understood the concept right away.!! This is cool!! Viruses don't have DNA, only RNA, and mRNA is messenger RNA--it's one of the kinds of RNA our body makes, and it sends signals to and from DNA (well, in our bodies it takes information from DNA to other parts of the cells, at least that's the job I remember).

Now I'll go read the link for more info.

annapi | 5505 comments Boy, it's been a long while since the last post here, but I figured this was a fitting place to close out this thread.

I finally got unblinded today! And I did receive the placebo back in December 17, so it's not a surprise I got Covid. The annoying thing is that because of the pause in the vaccine study, they have a lot of red tape and paperwork to go through with all the changes, and as of today the pause is still in effect with regard to the study so they could not give me the J&J vaccine even though it's being distributed now.

I had to make my own appointment at a local place, and I chose to get the J&J despite my history of a blood clot back in 2003, because they said all the cases were of women under 45 who were on birth control. I'm way over that age so I felt safe enough, and was able to find a same day appointment this afternoon to get a shot. One and done!

Lots of appointments available if you choose J&J - I think people are still wary of it so most are choosing either Pfizer or Moderna, and also not many places here are offering it.
