SOLVED. Old Childrens Detective series. Main characters are animals (dogs?). In one mystery, they visit a town where all the snakes are having their skins stolen. There's a secret society called something like "the SSSS". Read around 1999/2000. [s]

i also remember the main characters are animals, but i cant remember exactly , most likely they were dogs. theres also a saying which has stuck with me since i read the book (would have been around 99/2000) "hear no weevil see no weevil" as i believe the main character dislikes them.

i remember the culprit was a large old snake that couldnt grow his own skin so he had to steal the skins from snakes as they slept.

i hope this is enough as its not a very long book as i remember
