The rest of The Giver series is not as good as The Giver. It took too long I think. They were fine but they didn't have the same impact. As a whole they do make a nice cohesive story though! I do want to re-read them consecutively.

It's been about 5 years since I read The Giver so I am not even sure how much I remember [probably should have reread it before jumping back in, but ahhhhh, life. LOL]. I had heard that the ones after aren't as good and really don't have much to do with The Giver overall, so thankfully, my expectations are not that high.

Well I lasted a little bit, but I gave up. What a depressing beginning of a book and a truly hideous narrator. Meh. I will read and reread The Giver all day long, but I think I will just pass on the rest of this series.

David Tennant IS a fabulous narrator!! He narrated My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece and it was an amazing experience. It was random Overdrive choice when I was looking for just anything that was available on my wishlist! lol.

You might actually really love Practical Magic [the book] then!! I am not sure why I was drawn to the movie - it certainly was not something I was typically watching at that time in my life, but it struck a real chord and it has stayed with me. I hope if you read the book, you love it!!

I wanted to write a review for why I didn't finish this [and many other's that had been on this list and have been replaced], even though it has since been replaced on this list. I had some real revelations today as I shut this one off and moved on and wanted to share them somewhere.
This is what I have learned this year; the books I wanted to
read in the early years of Goodreads are not the books I want to read now, no matter how popular they still are [like this one]. In 2011, I was separated, but still very much in love with my husband and hoping and praying for reconciliation and my book choices absolutely reflect that. I believed in love and hope and the goodness in people and that even if my heart was broken, it could and would heal and I absolutely would find love again. I now know this is all a fallacy that both books and movies perpetuate, and in 2011 I had 100% bought into this. I am a much different person now, ten years later. Everyone does not get a happy ending. Everyone does not find love again. People DO spend their lives alone, and I have found that I do not need to read books that both remind me of that time and remind me what a lie these stories have been for me.
**NOTE** I am absolutely NOT saying these are bad stories. Not even remotely. What I am saying is that they are bad FOR ME. I am absolutely sure that this is a beautiful book and that many many many people both loved it and recommend it and pass it on and I am so glad and happy for them. I wish it could be me. It is a tough thing to have to give up books when you have been looking forward to them and even tougher to realize why.
Thanks for the safe space to figure this out.
Dawn, I hope your realization helps you to avoid books that no longer fit and make more room for the ones that do. I DNF books for any number of reasons, and it's rarely that the book is a bad one.

Not because they are bad, because they are not [at least the first one isn't], but for other reasons. I can tell you if you want, or you can just decide on your own. :-)
