Dawn Michelle wrote: "This is my first Andy Weir; I own The Martian, but have never read it [I KNOW, I KNOW] so I am a newbie. I am afraid it will be too science fictiony for me, but you never know. Crossing my fingers!!..."
Oh there is a lot of science jargon in The Martian but I think it would be good on audio! And the movie was really good! Matt Damon really brought Mark Watney to life.

I think Wil Wheaton narrates The Martian!! S W O O N. ;-)
And the movie has been on my radar for forever. I plan on reading the book next year [there is no way I can do this book AND that one in one year. My head would explode] and then I will watch the movie.

It is rare [unless its an audiobook] that I can read read a book in 3 days anymore. SO depressing.

WHAT an odd book, that is strangely lovely at the same time. Those illustrations were amazing and Neil Gaiman is the king of stories. I don't know that I loved it, but I did enjoy it and would love to see these two collaborate again.

* I am also starting "Return of the Native" [on 6.13], which had been started but stopped in January. I just kept the original numbering [#30] which is why it isn't here. <--*EDIT* OH MY GOSH this was just so good. I totally love Thomas Hardy and will read anything he writes. SO fantastic
** I SURE hope that this doesn't turn out like Big Fish did for me [being just meh whilst the movie was amazing]; I have been looking forward to this book for a long time!! <--*EDIT* WHOOSH. As good as the movie [though the movie has changes that make it more watchable, neither take away from each other. MUCH better than my experience with "Big Fish" and I am so thankful. I would recommend this one to those who have seen and love the movie.

Thank you so much. It really helps that I stay home 99% of the time. I was gone all day yesterday and didn't read one word and it felt SO WEIRD. I mean it was good and I was glad to be out and about, but WOW. After months of nothing but reading, it was very weird.

Where do I start with this one? A simple conversation about this book with Joy led to us finding out about the plagiarism charges [81!!!!!] and the court cases and the refusal by the Pulitzer committee to pull the prize from the author [I will not even say his name]. HOW HOW HOW does someone lie about a story, be found guilty of plagiarism, and still be lauded and revered? Especially within the black community? I am completely baffled and shocked by all of this. And 100% completely disappointed and completely sick to my stomach over how much this man deceived people.
What makes me the maddest is, this was a good story. If he had just admitted he made a mistake and had borrowed from others and not given credit, that he made up the [specific] links of Africa/Gambia to his family and that this was "just a story", I could understand that. It is still a very good story. But to continually lie [all the way to his death] is just wrong. He stole from other people and made up stories [which has been confirmed by his papers that he donated to a university] and the book is now forever tainted in my eyes. I am not sure how anyone can read this book and not take all of that into consideration. I for one am unable to complete the reading and this will forever leave a bad taste in my mouth.
Links to everything I learned:
www.nytimes.com/1978/12/15/archives/r...
This is the 1978 NY Times article about the plagiarism suit and what happened at the time.
historynewsnetwork.org/article/168815
This is an excellent article from 2018 that talks about the Pulitzer and how it should have been removed from Mr. Haley when the plagiarism was discovered and how it has been before the committee several times and is always shoved to the wayside. It is extremely eye-opening. I have always had an issue with the Pulitzer's, but now I don't care if I ever read another one again and for sure they are also tainted by their refusal to acknowledge the lie that is Alex Haley and Roots. And I am appalled at people that continue to defend his actions simply because the book is a good read [and I cannot deny that. I read 40% and it killed me to quit]; it is a decently written book. But written by whom is what made me quit. Anyone who decides to settle out of court for absurd amounts of money screams more to me than just the plagiarism. It is disappointing and frustrating.
For more links, simply google. You will see many many many more articles - for both sides. It is important to read both sides and then decide for yourself. My choice is to not read him, but there will absolutely not be any judgement from me if you decide to read it. Again, it IS a good story. And it tells some important truths. I just think there are better books out there that tells similar stories in a better way and *AHEM* more honest ways.

So far, I like it, though it is much more sciencey and mathy than my poor non-sciencey brain can deal with so I just nod and go "OKAY" and move forward. LOL
His writing did grab me from the first paragraph so I see why people love him; I am totally hooked.
