There are three basic magic laws- the law of similarity, the law of contagion and I don't remember the third one. In every world they have to fulfill a task that somehow changes the original story, so they can come back to our world. In the second or third story one of them finds a girl that he marries and takes back with him. I read the book two-three years ago, but I believe it is written quite a bit earlier.
