Jedi Academy Reading Challenge

(formerly Star Wars Yearly Reading Challenge)

Duration: Optional (1, 2, 3 or 4 years)

Rules:
‣ Choose your rank & category, choose your books/comic books and get to reading!
‣ Choose how long you want your Jedi training to last. You can decide to complete your study in one year, but you can also choose to do it in stages - steadily rising through the ranks in two or more years.
‣ You can tweak your task list (the original 16 tasks) by substituting two original tasks by additional ones, and/or repeating one of the original tasks - You have 2 substitutions and 1 repetition if you want them!
‣ Comic books can be used only when the task description says so, audiobooks can be used for all the tasks
‣ You can use every book/comic book only once (i.e. for one task)
‣ When you've finished a book or a comic book rate and date it
‣ You may count any books over 100 pages and any comic books over 70 pages
‣ Legends and/or New Canon books are allowed depending on the category you've chosen
‣ Re-reads are allowed
‣ You can change your rank, category or duration at any time

Ranks:
Force Sensitive = 1-4 books
Jedi Initiate = 5-7 books
Jedi Padawan = 8-10 books
Jedi Knight = 11-13 books
Jedi Master = 14-16 books
Chosen One = 32 books (every task twice)
The Force itself = 64 books (special rules for this one - see bellow)

Categories:

Rising Star - New Canon only
Maverick - Both Legends and New Canon

Original Tasks:
1. Read a SW stand-alone book.
2. Read a SW book that's part of a series.
3. Read a SW short story anthology or a SW short story collection.
4. Read a SW comic book collection.
5. Read a novelization of a SW movie/ TV show.

15. Read a book with Luke, Han, Obi-Wan, Anakin/Vader or Leia (or Rey) as the main character
16. Read a non-fiction book on the history of SW, its pop culture significance or making of the movies or a biography/memoir of a member of SW cast or crew.

2022 Additions:

Are there any tasks in the original challenge that you really want to skip?
You can substitute up to two of them with two of the bonus tasks and/or you can duplicate one of the existing original tasks. Every participant has only 2 substitutions and 1 duplication available. So choose wisely.

Bonus tasks:
1. Re-read a SW book you loved (rated 4 or 5 stars).
2. Give another chance to a SW book you didn't enjoy (rated 1 or 2 stars, or DNF'd).
3. Read a SW comicbook omnibus (or equivalent of one).
4. Read a next installment of a SW series you started reading during the challenge.
5. Read a SW book by a new-to-you author.

Rules for "the Force Itself" Rank:
64 books altogether. You have to complete all the original AND bonus tasks three times (no substitutions, no duplications). You have to complete at least one full set of tasks in Legends, one set in Canon and the last set you can mix Legends and Canon. The last book the 64th one is your choice, can be whatever you choose as long as it's SW related.

FAQ

1. In tasks that call for "a book" does it have to be an adult book or can I use YA or middle grade books for those, too?
If it says only "a book" and doesn't specify, then you can use either of these.

2. Can I use comic books for tasks #8-15?
No. Comic books can be used only for tasks that specifically mention "comic book" of "graphic novel/novelization". So only original tasks #4, #6 and bonus task #3.

3. (re: task #3) What's the difference between short story anthologies and collections?
An anthology contains stories written by various different authors. Collections are written by one author.
Examples of SW anthologies: Star Wars The Clone Wars Stories of Light and Dark by Lou Anders Canto Bight (Journey to Star Wars The Last Jedi, #1) by Saladin Ahmed Tales of the Bounty Hunters (Star Wars) by Kevin J. Anderson Tales from the Empire (Star Wars) by Peter Schweighofer

4. (re:task #4) What qualifies as a comic book collection?
A collection presenting either a completecomic book miniseries, a story arc from a single title, or a series of stories with an arc or common theme. Needs 70+ pages to count for the challenge.

Examples of SW comic book collections: Star Wars The High Republic, Vol. 1 There Is No Fear by Cavan Scott Star Wars From the Journals of Obi-Wan Kenobi by Jason Aaron Star Wars Jango Fett - Open Seasons by W. Haden Blackman The Thrawn Trilogy by Mike Baron

5. (re: task #5) Do junior novelizations count?
Yes. Both junior and adult novelizations can be used to complete the task.

6. (re: task #13 - 15) How do I decide who is the main character when there's more prominent characters in the book?
Use common sense. If the book is more of an ensemble piece then you can count more characters as MCs.
Example: Books like Battle Surgeons where there are about 5 prominent characters and only one of them is female (Barriss Offee) are ok to use either for tasks #13 or #14 (especially as the old EU is light on female MCs) . On the other hand, in Heir to the Empire Thrawn is one of the main characters, but so are Luke, Leia and Han, that's why you can use the book only for task #15 and not #13.

7. (re: task #16) What non-fiction books are there that deal with the Disney era?
There are not many of those. That's why any non-fiction that deals however briefly with the post Lucas era of SW (e.g. memoirs that cover mostly the OT/PT era and touch on the sequels only in passing) qualify for this task as both legends and canon. I know it's almost like cheating but unless you count "The Art of..." series you would have no options for canon NF.
Example: George Lucas: A Life deals in detail with OT and PT but the last chapter delves into the Disney deal. I'd be ok with counting the book towards both legends and canon NF however strange it might seem.

Hooray, Melina is in! A lot of us are the same, as Zuzana says. My reading whims change and the best laid plans at a list goes out the window, I made a tentative 2021-books shelf yesterday and I am tempted to change it a day later.

I hope you'll like it. There's a lot about Carrie's parents and step-parents and all of their scandalous connections - Carrie serves all of the shocking details with so much humor but it couldn't have been easy on her as a kid.

Nice. I say go for it! It is a heck of a commitment and the key word is fun.

I was thinking of a prolonged personal effort relative to our 2021 Star Wars Reading Challenge. As a parent, full time employee, being physically active, and with so many varied interests in addition to reading, working through twenty to thirty books a year is a challenge for me. Let alone 'just' five to seven Star Wars books. My mind is drawn constantly to other reading interests.

I conceived of a prolonged challenge that might span several years. This year I will get my five to seven Star Wars books in and 'earn' Jedi Initiate. In 2022 I will read another five to seven and earn Jedi Knight status (working through Padawan in that time frame), etc. I compare it to being a college student: this year I am a Freshman. Next year, with continued reading I'll be a sophomore.

My current challenge profile looks like this with an added field for Next Advancement:
Duration: 27 December 2020 to 27 December 2021
Current Level: Force Sensitive
Next Advancement: Jedi Initiate (5 to 7 tasks)
Category: Maverick (Legends and canon mix)

My 2022 challenge profile would add my attained level and identify my next advancement upon completion of the selected challenge:
Duration: 27 December 2021 to 27 December 2022
Current Level: Jedi Initiate
Next Advancement: Jedi Knight (5 to 7 Tasks to include Padawan work)
Category: Maverick (Legends and canon mix)

This is totally random and may be completely out of the spirit of the idea of an annual challenge. Please, consider this my random thoughts. This is a personal view and idea I've been thinking about. And it is probably too complex to track and manage in a group setting. Maybe I should quit typing and go read a Star Wars book...

May the Force be with you.

That's a great idea, Don. If you want to do the challenge in stages, go ahead. Do it the way it brings you the most joy. :)

Sarah, I've been recommended How Star Wars Conquered the Universe: The Past, Present, and Future of a Multibillion Dollar Franchise published in 2014 for the Lucas's SW.
How Star Wars Conquered the Universe The Past, Present, and Future of a Multibillion Dollar Franchise by Chris Taylor

Other books I might read for this prompt: Star Wars on Trial: Science Fiction And Fantasy Writers Debate the Most Popular Science Fiction Films of All Time and George Lucas: A Life.

The new SW might be problematic - there's not much of other official non-fiction than "The art of..." books and visual dictionaries for Disney films.

Wow! Well done, Zuzana! I've only read eight books this year and only two for my Star Wars Reading challenge. At this pace I think Chosen One is within easy reach. :)

Thanks, Don. Only 6 books to the rank of Master.

I think that two books so far works fine within your two year plan.
BTW you can read Master and Apprentice in April with the group.

BTW I didn't know that there's both a book and a comicbook dedicated to Captain Phasma. One learns new things every day. :)

Hi Zuzana, There were 4 issues of Captain Phasma comics that picked up with her escaping from the trash compactor that she was left in from The Force Awakens and how she covers up her role in lowering the shields at Starkiller Base. There were a few panels in the series that referenced a character from the Phasma novel. Those panels were probably confusing to anyone who had not read Phasma.
