SOLVED: Children's/YA > SOLVED. Children’s Anthology. Story of a gnome with small feet. Possibly Enid Blyton but I can’t find it anywhere? Read about 2008-2011.

Amy Leigh | 4 comments Hi everyone!! Ok this is a weird one and it’s kind of confusing so sorry in advance.

I have a memory of a specific story from an anthology collection I read when I was under the age of 10 around 2008-2011. The book itself was probably written in the 1940s.

The story itself is about a man (possibly a goblin or gnome), who was very nasty and hated by his town. The only think they liked about him was that he had very nice feet which he was very vain about. The story ends with a cobbler making him some magic shoes that forced him to walk away so they never had to see him again.

I remember a black and white illustration of him walking away into the distance at the end of the story. I remember from another image that he had black hair and a pointy hat. I was certain this story was written by Enid Blyton.

This is where it becomes more confusing. Recently I found an anthology collection by Enid Blyton called ‘The Enchanted Shoes’. The name, author, and the fact it was one story from a collection all checks out. The cover imagine is similar, depicting a man walking over a hill with magic shoes. But this is a colour image, he is on all fours with shoes on his hands as well as his feet, and there’s a child in the background. It’s not the image I remember at all. The synopsis is also nothing like the story I described:
“Even though his mother warns him against wandering in the hills William isn't a bit afraid of dwarfs, nor of giants, until one day when Thimble the dwarf captures him with a pair of enchanted shoes. The shoes take him to the magical cottages, dens and palaces of Witch Twiddle, Wizard Castaspell, Dwindle the dwarf and Rumble the kindly giant, but will William have to roam the enchanted hillside forever?”

I’m really confused now. I have NOT read this book. The synopsis, cover image, and the fact that it is the main story of the anthology is ringing zero bells.
So I came to multiple conclusions:

1) I accidentally mixed up two stories in my memory, one being the Enchanted Shoes, to create what I described at the beginning about the gnome with the small feet
2) Enid Blyton wrote over 700 stories and it is possible that she just wrote two very similar tales, and I found the one which I have not read.
3) it’s not Enid Blyton at all and I’m bringing her into this equation which is leading me down the wrong track in looking for the book

Either way...does anyone have ANY idea what the story is?
I’m going crazy here!!
A massive thank you to anyone who actually read this mess - I’m aware I sound insane
