A man is offered an escape from prison if he agrees to assassinate someone. He agrees, they get him out of jail, and he's flown on a helicopter over some country estate where his target is swimming in a private pool. The shot from a helicopter is successful, the target is killed, and the assassin is trying to escape from his handlers - he gets to Mexico with his wife, but in a few weeks his handlers catch up with him, end of the story.

Very short, less than 200 pages, I read it in a paperback, don't remember neither the author, nor the title.

There was a movie based on this book, I watched it.

Why is the man in jail? What was his previous job? How did he develop his sharpshooting skills?

Kris, I read it around 1980, I think it was published some 5 years earlier. I don't remember why he's in jail, but I think there was some miscarriage of justice one way or another.

He served in the military, I'm pretty sure, and this is where he acquired his sharpshooter skills.

The whole story is set in the US, don't recall more precise location.
