I actually gave the first GOT a 5 also. For me it's the writing and the world building. Even though some parts were a bit slow, it hooked me.

So what's really interesting is that almost all of the characters seem to be hearing this voice? Dalinar sees the visions where a voice is speaking to him, Kalinar saw that face in the storm, Shallan can apparently see everything in her Memory and also hears a voice. So will it be the same voice or multiple ones? And what are its intentions then? It feels like they're being manipulated by something (especially Dalinar).

Something I noticed in chapter 46 when Kal is talking to Syl and he says: 'Something about this conversation was wrong' and later he is thinking to himself that maybe some evil spren is following him? So honestly, I think it's Syl that keeps putting him in the wrong direction somehow (I do think it's unintentionally or that something is in control of her). They also keep going back to sprens in the interludes.

Agree with what you said about Shallan. I'm very glad she now has this twist and I do hope she continues to go on with Jasnah because I do like their scenes.

Szeth definitely feels very important! I think it's likely he'll get his own chapters at some point. He also seems to be used by someone important. Maybe this mysterious 'master' is tied in with the voices everyone hears and sees? It appears that a lot of people, creatures and maybe even the Parshendi are being used by something. Odium maybe? Whoever that may be haha.

Fortunately most of your questions/doubts (which were the same that I had at one point of time) will be clarified by the end, but, of course, the ending leaves us with a different set to keep us anticipating. Also, if that’s a legit Mistborn Easter egg, I will need to replan my reading schedule and read the Mistborn books asap.

Szeth does seem to be important, and I agree that he might be upgraded to a full-time POV character in the future. I always felt sad for him, we see him doing heinous things despite not wanting to. I definitely want to know more about the Truthless people, are there more? Why are they supposed to kill?

That whole part of Sadeas abandoning Dalinars forces, Adolin accepting his fathers choices, Kaladin realising he wouldn't leave them behind and fighting to help them (which was EPIC). I'm usually not the biggest fan of battle scenes but this was truly amazing. And when Dalinar gave up Oathbringer for the bridgemen!! I did not see that coming.

But, as usual, I have so many questions. So Syl can just grow to human size now? What does she know that we don't? I want to know sooo badly :)

What is up the Parshendi? They definitely seem to be tied to something, whether that is the Voidbringers, the Heralds or the Radiants, or something else entirely, I have absolutely no idea.

I literally cried over all those scenes that you mentioned; I was also praying most of the time, especially during the battle scenes like that was my army fighting. I've never read anything by Brandon Sanderson before, so it came as a surprise that how well can he write and lead his readers into a tornado of emotions.

So I finished it a few days ago. Gave it 5 stars!
(view spoiler)[ Wow, wow, wow. I love this book so much. Sanderson continues to blow me away. Kaladin is one of the best characters I have read in recent memory. The way he just continues fighting to save those around him, while battling with his depression.. phenomenal, really.

I really didn't expect to be so invested in Dalinar's character and storyline as much as I actually am. I'm probably the most excited for his journey in the next book which is really surprising. He seems to be the one who has to bring back the Radiants. Can't wait!

Even though I wasn't in love with Shallan's chapters, I definitely didn't dislike them either. Hopefully, she develops a bit more over the course of the books though.

This series really has the potential to become one of my favorite of all time and I can't believe we have to wait until next month to read the next one!!

Holly Molly, I haven’t even recovered from all the lashings, light/darkeyes & Truthless, and Sanderson has thrown another batch at me, this one with Heightening, Awakening, BioChromatic breath, and Lifeless folks. His level of imagination is insane!

This time around, I feel the plot is simpler so far, unlike The Way of Kings, and there haven’t been a lot of characters, just a few who seem to be the primary ones. The characters seem simple too, not much of a history shadowing them; Siri and Vienna don’t intrigue me as much as LightSong who has a mysterious aura to him. This whole concept of returning is yet to be explained, so I’m noting down every little hint. We know the Returned do not remember their past lives, they are considered Gods and are confined to the Court of Gods - LightSong doesn’t enjoy being a God and considers it as a punishment of sorts, an imprisonment of the so-called Gods. I’m yet to understand who gets to return after their death - do they have a choice? Besides, what kind of Gods would draw souls from other people to keep themselves alive? If a God can’t even stay alive on his/her own, they can’t be real Gods!

I want to know more about the God King - they say he was a stillborn and has never drawn a breath. So being returned doesn’t hamper growth/aging? We know there hasn’t been a queen in thirty years, but I don’t remember picking up how long the God King has been ruling? Has he ever had a queen before? It is also told that the God King can only have stillborn children, does that mean he has already had a child before, or had there been other God Kings too? What happened to those children? And wth happened on Siri’s first night in the palace? Weren’t they supposed to sleep together, I mean wasn’t that the whole point of the treaty? Also, I hate Siri being addressed as ‘Vessel’ by the priests, sick!

Sorry about writing so much, these silly questions/observations might not even be important for the plot, who knows!

I missed talking about Siri and Vivenna’s father. Initially I was upset with his decision, I thought he was biased and was trying to save Vivenna, but now I’m starting to feel that he must have had a logical reason behind it, although it did look like a spur of the moment decision.

(view spoiler)[ Well this book had a really, really quick start. Not always used to that from Sanderson but not complaining :) Coming from Stormlight, this books seems a little more simple. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing. The last few chapters I really enjoyed so I'm definitely getting into the book.

The characters still feel a little bland to me. I think Lightsong is definitely the most interesting one. Everything with the Returned in general has captured my attention. I'm curious as to how the process of becoming a Returned works (I know we've had some explanations but not sure if that's the actual truth yet). And are they really gods? Also, how genius is it to have a god-like character that doesn't believe he's a god?

The Godking! It's so cruel what the priests did to him! I really like that twist to the character. So the priests are actually the ones in charge right??

As to your questions, so there have been Godkings before as Bluefingers said in the last chapter and apparently there's something really wrong about the children born from a Godking? What could that be? Also, based on that I definitely don't think he's been married before. Just because the Godking was born as a stillborn and then Returned, they probably naturally assume his child will be too and will become the next Godking. However, because Bluefingers actually knows what the child apparently will become, the priests probably do as well. Which means that they want this child to be born. So what are their plans if that's the case? Probably nothing good haha

I found the first 10 chapters slow to my liking but thankfully these last 13 chapters have picked up pace. I agree, Kathelijne, the characters seem to be quite bland and one-dimensional. In fact, so far the writing hasn’t been as gripping as The Way of Kings; it is interesting to keep me going on though.

I didn’t see that twist about the God King coming, I did guess that his reputation was more of a propaganda considering his behaviour towards Siri, but that he would only be a puppet was unforeseen. I have the same doubts about the priests being in charge, really? Could there be a higher, more sinister authority we are yet to be introduced to?

From what I made out from the latest chapters, I agree with your understanding. This God King has never had a wife or a child, and he has inherited the throne from his father. But I don’t understand why they need an heir, if all they plan to do is keep him under control- why not take the throne and rule as they wish?

I’m very annoyed with Siri and Vivenna’s characters - both of them are so boring. Vivenna claims to have been tutored her entire life to be the queen of Hallandren, but she hardly has a clue to how things work in Hallandren. She is intimidated with the smallest of things - clothing to food, literally everything. Her schooling was not up to the mark, I must say! 😉

Also, I’m most invested in Vasher and the other mercenaries - still trying to decipher their motives. Just got to know that people live even after their breaths have been taken - not just live, they actually carry on like usual. How is a normal person different from a drab then? (hide spoiler)]

Warbreaker is actually free, and you can find the chapters on Brandon's website. In case if you have any doubts with your version, you can check with the ones in the website. It is what Brandon considers his "sample" book, so readers can get a sense of his stories, writing style etc and decide if they want to buy his other books :)

(view spoiler)[Vivenna, in my opinion is an example of how different the world you are taught about, and the real world are. The theoritical training you get might not be adequate if you dont have the practical skills required to apply them in real life.
But otherwise both Siri and Vivenna are somewhat boring and one-dimensional. But the story revolves around them.

haha, these days, almost all the books I read during the month are buddy reads. The only thing I feel bad for, is the book that read during the end of the month. By that time, most of my buddies would have finished the book, so I would be playing more of catch up. Overall, its always yay! for buddy reads :)

Thoughts after reading chapter 30

Alright the plot is really starting to become interesting. Especially these last few Lightsong chapters have raised a lot of questions. What exactly are the Returned? There really seems to be more to them then we know. I also found it interesting to see the young child god, Hopefinder. They mention how he immediately became so mature for his age, but that makes me wonder... why does the Godking feel so child-like then? Shouldn't he be more like Hopefinder? I mean, Hopefinder is a lot younger than he is.

Also who was Lightsong? Although he thinks he might have been a sheriff or guard, why is he able to juggle then? And sketch? And know sailor terms? Really the only theory I have is that he might have been a mercenary as well? I mean it's not fullproof at all haha, however, his character definitely seems to fit in with Denth, or whatever he's called, and Tonk Fah?

Talking about Denth, I really like his character! I agree with you Trisha, Vivenna is kind of boring, but I do like her dynamics with him. I hope they explore that more. These mercenaries probably have a lot more to do with everything than they're saying. Seeing how they definitely have a history with Vasher and changed their names. Maybe they used to be part of the same crew? And maybe Lightsong was as well? It's probably far fetched but it's all I got hahah

The only development in these last 10 chapters was the betrayal of Denth and his gang - I always had doubts about them considering they knew way more about the Princess’ plans and were always one step ahead of her. Besides Vasher seems to be a better person and if he left the gang, there has to be a reason behind it. I am also curious to know who has been paying Denth’s squad to keep Vivenna captive.

I keep thinking that LightSong might give up his breath for someone by the end of the book, as in he will be able to find the purpose behind his returning. But I’d hate to see him go, not that I like him - his humour tires me at times.

HopeFinder might have had a high priest of the likes of Llarimar (LightSong’s high priest) so he seems to have learnt more while the God King had Treledees, who deliberately kept the God King devoid of knowledge. Maybe that’s what has made the difference. Just guessing.

Hoid the Storyteller Tells Us the History of Hallandren

This whole scene came about because I wanted an interesting way to delve into the history. Siri needed to hear it, and I felt that many readers would want to know it. However, that threatened to put me into the realm of the dreaded infodump.

And so, I brought in the big guns. This cameo is so obvious (or, at least, someday it will be) that I almost didn’t use the name Hoid for the character, as I felt it would be too obvious. The first draft had him using one of his other favorite pseudonyms. Wow! That involved some thinking! I wonder how that name slipped off my mind.

Btw, the only wild guess that I have made so far is that possibly, (view spoiler)[this Nightblood is a Shardblade considering the similarity of wounds both of them render. Or as I remember, Jasnah’s mother (can’t recall her name now) talked to Dalinar about some tribe attempting to duplicate Shardblades and Shardplates - Nightblood could be the result of that duplication. Although I don’t remember anyone (Szeth, Dalinar or the others) talking to their blades or the blade doing things on its own. If it’s a Shardblade, it’s an advanced version. (hide spoiler)]

Oh that's a great theory, it didn't even cross my mind but you're right, they do make similar wounds. I really have to start keeping a notebook just for Cosmere references haha :)
