I wasn’t planning on putting up a bingo card this year, call me lazy. A good friend said that she did not believe that I could make it to the New Year without starting a bingo thread. As is more times the case, she was right, and I was wrong.

Catch as Catch Can-defined as the best one can do with whatever is available. Or, something done by any means or in any possible way, often haphazardly. That’s my plan for playing this year, que sera sera, whatever will be will be.

This next year I’m not going to take things to seriously, especially my challenges. I hope 90% of my reading this year is off my ever growing bookshelf. If I don’t already own it, forget it. This may make finishing challenges difficult. That said I have already found at least 3 books I want, hopefully through the library, hopefully they will stay open.

So on to next year, no hard planning, just letting it happen day by day, book by book.

Terry | 2376 comments Good luck with reading from from your bookshelf, Bob. I need to do that, too, and a lot of my Bingo options are there. But, truth to tell, I also put a lot of new options — shiny, new, hard to resist options. Just saying.

Terris | 4385 comments Way to go, Bob! I didn't think you could not do a Bingo card! Glad you're joining in, and hope you can use all the books on your shelf for the challenge :)

Connie G (connie_g) | 841 comments Usually I completely change my plans when I'm doing a challenge so your "no plans" idea will be fine, Bob. We all have the habit of buying too many books.

message 12: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen | 5458 comments I think you are wise, Bob. If this year taught us anything, it's that sometimes we have to catch as catch can! Enjoy your reading.

MJ | 176 comments You caved pretty quick! The reading plans I’ve made for this year are for books I already have, can read online through Gutenberg, or can get digitally from the library. It is limiting my options for sure, but I’m gonna be relaxed about the whole thing this year. Happy reading!

If this doesn’t meet the definition of Catch and Catch Can, I don’t know what does. I started the year off reading five books. I admit that these five books work for various Buffet Challenges, but nothing has been planned for Bingo. This morning I was reviewing my bingo card and all five of my books work in various squares. The best part is it also gives me my first Bingo. Of course I have to wait 6-7 weeks to finish War and Peace, but I don’t see me abandoning it.

So I’ll list this as a future potential bingo. I just had to share the coincidence. None of these are finished by all are well under way with a couple almost finished.

Five books no planning and a Bingo. I need to go get a lottery ticket.

Diagonal Future Bingo

B1: War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy , B2: Placeholder 01 by Holder Place , B3: Placeholder 01 by Holder Place , B4: Placeholder 01 by Holder Place , B5: Placeholder 01 by Holder Place

N1: Placeholder 01 by Holder Place , N2: Placeholder 01 by Holder Place , N3: Deep South (Anna Pigeon, #8) by Nevada Barr , N4: Placeholder 01 by Holder Place , N5: Placeholder 01 by Holder Place

Gloom, despair, and agony on me,
I let wishful thinking get the best of me.
I don’t have a Bingo with my first five books.
My wishful thinking has made a fool of me.
I should have looked closer at square I2,
My lack of attention has made me look the fool
Gloom, despair, and agony on me.

I2: Book Published or Written 1700 or earlier. The “or earlier” is important here. Yesterday I thought I had a Bingo with the first five books I have started to read this year. Sadly I have screwed up. Songs of Innocence and of Experience was published in 1789, not 1700 or earlier. I can use it for square G2: Book Published in the 18th Century, but that doesn’t help feeling foolish about not paying attention and losing the unplanned bingo.

Oh well, live and learn. And steal from old TV shows, Hee Haw!

Cynda, I found the historical fiction Joan of Arc story by Twain to be fascinating. Thanks for the non-fiction suggestion, I will be on the lookout for a copy.

Yes, I’ve not done any posting since January, just quietly reading and working for a blackout. I am currently reading my last book, The Sea, The Sea and I am enjoying it a lot. However, I have been sidetracked by The Deerslayer and currently The Fountainhead and have not focused on The Sea as much as I should. Two more weeks tops and I will blackout this bingo challenge.

message 30: by Bob, Short Story Classics (new)

Bob | 4602 comments Mod
Why do we get sidetracked? I should have had a blackout at least two weeks ago. I started to read my last book The Sea, The Sea over a month ago and have not finished it. There is nothing wrong with the book, I like it, so far. Yet, I have let other books take precedence and have set this aside, I haven’t touched it in more than two weeks. The longer I leave it sit, the easier it is to not pick it back up. I need to finish this book before I slip into a full out reading slump.

message 31: by Terry (new)

Terry | 2376 comments I hope you get back into The Sea, The Sea. I loved it!

message 32: by Sara, Old School Classics (new)

Sara (phantomswife) | 9407 comments Mod
I would not think The Sea, The Sea was a good book to experience this with, Bob. I can imagine laying it aside and losing the thread and not wanting to go back again. I am having much the same experience right now with Australia Felix--if I don't get back to it soon, I can almost guarantee I will dnf it.

I wonder if mid-year or summer is my problem, but I am feeling myself slide right into that slump you describe. Good luck keeping yourself on solid ground.

message 33: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen | 5458 comments This is frustrating, Bob. I have a couple of great books right now that are taking me forever to read. And I hate losing that thread, as Sara describes. But then sometimes when I go with my distractions, they take me to great places! Here's to avoiding the reading slump, whichever road you take. :-)

I also stalled on a book. I am halfway through The Jungle Book, and I really need to get back to it. You will do it. I have been meaning to thank you, Bob. Last year Bob you really inspired me last year with your 3x short story challenge. So this year I have been reading short stories and it has been so much fun!

It has been a long time coming but my Catch as Catch Can Bingo Challenge has been caught, filleted, fried, and devoured. With the completion of The Sea, The Sea, which I started last June, I have a Bingo Blackout.

Taking so long to finish this book is not a reflection on the book’s quality, I just had a few of life’s roadblocks pop up on me this year. I set this book aside and just picked back up about 10 days ago. It is my first by Iris Murdoch and I found it to be exceptional.

Considered you almost didn't play Bingo this year, you really did a nice job!! LOL Congratulations on completing your card! You have some "big names" in classic books. Nice list.

Somehow I didn't know that Forrest Gump was actually a book before it was a movie. Interesting.

Sometimes things you can't control can ruin a read completely, so I'm so happy you ended up enjoying The Sea, The Sea. You had a great year of reading! Looking forward to the next buffet.
