I read this in 2014 or 2015 and the book felt fairly recent. It starts out with a teenage girl who can hear other peoples’ thoughts. She has strawberry blonde hair and her mother nags her about her weight and appearance. The two are preparing the girl to leave town, dye her hair dark brown, and start a new life staying with another family in California to escape her abusive/dangerous father. She meets a boy who I’m pretty sure is named Dominique and catches feelings. He has a little sister named Chloe. At school, the girl wears a device that blocks out other peoples’ thoughts and tells the principle it’s for an auditory processing disorder, but she still gets in trouble because some people are mad that she gets to wear headphones to school. A mean girl bullies her at school and calls her “fatty.” One day at a school assembly, the voices are too much and she passes out and wakes up at the nurse who asks if she ate breakfast that morning. The girl rides her bike around town and it’s hard because of all the hills. The boy, Dominique, helps rig up her bike so it has more gears. The ending sets up for a sequel because she sees her dad’s car. I read the sequel also and it involves her befriending the bully and the two of them scuba dive and discover mermaids.
