Joe | 9 comments Hello! The book I'm looking for is a children/preteen mystery book written in the style of a Choose Your Own Adventure in which you play a journalist who is sent to Transylvania to report on something (can't remember if the assignment is to report on Dracula or find someone who goes missing).

I read this book around 1992-1994 but it may have been published earlier. It was a thin softcover book with a Transylvanian castle and the butler from the story on the cover. The story has a spooky, dark, rainy vibe to it. In the book you play a journalist who is assisted around the castle and given clues by a butler who looks like Albert Einstein. You have to solve riddles, complete crosswords and a number of other puzzles to move on in the story. After you completed a puzzle it would direct you to another page to continue the story, very much like a Choose Your Own Adventure. The story included a pack of wolf dogs named Amadeus, Wolfgang etc and a man sitting behind a large mahogany desk who we dont get to see. In the story you arrive at a town called Cluj. Some of the puzzles include a riddle about an elevator, and some rearview mirror writing with the word Cluj written backward. I don't think it was an Usborne book of puzzles even though my own searches bring up usborne books. It was a thin book that was highly entertaining and kept me engrossed for hours. Thanks for any help anyone can offer in finding this book.

Becca (beccalikesbooks) | 5545 comments Might be worth looking through https://gamebooks.org/, which catalogues Choose Your Own Adventure and similar books.

Joe, I added a few details to the header/topic title. You can update it by clicking the small "edit" link after the header. This only works on the full Desktop website - not the Mobile website or app. (On the Mobile website, click the "Desktop version" link at the bottom of the page.)

Thanks! I tried to look through this catalogue but can't seem to find it. There's a game book quite similar to this written by Dane Barrett called The Mystery of Dracula but this story is from 2019. Thanks for your input though, any help is a step closer to finding this book!

Can we eliminate Crypt Of The Vampire (1984, according to Worldcat.org) by Dave Morris?

I can't believe it! That's the one! I have been searching for this book for such a long time! Thank you thank you so much! How were you able to figure out what I was talking about? I felt like it was so obscure no one would know. It was one of my favourite books as a child. You have put me out of my misery, now I can sleep well lol. Thanks again!

Simi | 147 comments Glad it's the one you were looking for. There's actually another book in this PuzzleQuest series called The Riddle of the Sphinx.
