SOLVED. YA Fantasy comic book, several kids find a camera that opens a portal to another world during one's grandfather's funeral

I read this comic book I believe around 2008-2011. It's part of a series I found in the comic section of the local library. I remember the book (as well as the others in the series) were fairly thin. It might have been a year or two old by then. I found it in america, in english, and i know the story was also set in america, modern day.

From what I specifically remember of the plot, I believe a young black girl came into town with her parents (I think she was adopted) for her grandfather's funeral. She was friends with several other kids in the town, in some capacity. I remember one of them was a latino boy with (i think) huge eyebrows and a pretty crappy family. A while after the funeral the kids went into the grandfather's house and poked around, discovering a sort of old camera or device that created a portal. One of the boys went through and ended up with a village of people in that world, who he couldn't really understand.

The rest of the kids eventually followed, stuck there in that world. One blonde girl from the village helped them travel, and the latino boy had a huge crush on her. One of the big plot points as well were there were these shadowy spirit type things that came out at night, and hated the light. If they touched any human, they did bad damage.
