Now for a little break until the final stretch with Part 5! I think I'm looking forward to this the most since these were my favorites (as well as least favorites) parts of the movie!

The thing with this whole sect..."
You know, I really think he did it to (view spoiler)

Yes you're probably right it was for both reasons. He is a complicated character!

One of my favourite books. It took me years to read it the first time but once I got into it I absolutely loved it. Read it a second time years later.
I would read it again if that is what is chosen as I really enjoyed the TV adaptation too

My main issue with at least half of the books on that list is that I just read them for wheel, lol!

I found the descriptions of the Klan hard to read. I know this book has a lot of criticism because of how she describes slavery (they are all so happy!) and the Klan, but that in itself is interesting to me that it was her genuine opinion of the time. (and probably a lot of other people's too). It is good that we can see what she wrote much more critically these days

I loved the characters. That is hands-down the reason this book is such a winner for me.

I'm finally reading this a little more seriously. I will not finish before the end of the year - obviously, because I never do - but I am hopeful to get to about half before 2022 rolls around :-)
It's an enjoyable read and from what I remember of the movie, the first part sticks pretty closely to the book. I also love how spoilt Scarlett is hehe. Well portrayed in the movie, too. She is a very, very particular character.

Looks like there will be a few of us reading this in January 2022 still hehe.
Yay, I am not alone ;-)

I'm somewhere on the 35% mark but I left it late so no surprise there. I am enjoying the read though. I'm thinking about popping the movie briefly in this weekend to check about Wade. I'm almost certain that the kid does not appear in the movie, or I have completely forgotten about the offspring between Scarlett and Charlie.

Really enjoyed it :D

To be fair, he's pretty much a non-character in the book too, so I can see how he could be forgotten, lol.
I only saw part of the movie once when I was a teen. I didn't have the patience back then to deal with the over-acting of '30s cinema (I've since gotten a degree in film and tv and am rather partial to the era, lol), so didn't watch more than about 15 minutes :D

I finally finished this doorstop. The last 40% went pretty quickly. I could have easily finished it on time if I hadn't stopped reading for some reason. I don't even remember why I stopped!
I'm still trying to figure out what I think about this book. I didn't always "enjoy" it as such. I didn't really like any of the characters...though it's hard not to get caught up in Scarlett's train wreck of a life. She is a fascinating character to follow. But I found the overall story rather depressing. I didn't get behind the "romance." The relationship between Rhett and Scarlett just seemed unhealthy and dysfunctional to me.
As far as the racial and political stuff goes...that's where I'm more stuck. I've been reading more on the topic, trying to figure out what Mitchell was trying to accomplish. Did she really see the Confederacy in a romanticized way, or was she satirizing it? There are passages in the book where the narrator is clearly denigrating the Old South and these characters. But then there are other passages that seem to go the other way. (It doesn't help that my own reading was stretched out for so long.) I can see arguments on both sides.
I may end up reading Southern Daughter: The Life of Margaret Mitchell and the Making of Gone With the Wind to try to gain some more insight. The Civil War era has always been a topic of great interest for me, so I want to dig deeper. I definitely want to read and learn more about the Reconstruction period, something I don't feel we touched on as much in school. I checked out a PBS documentary on it from my library, so I'll start there.
Oh, and I still need to watch the GWTW film. I can't say I'm really looking forward to it. It's long, and as I already said, I didn't love the story. Plus, while it sounds like the film cut out and toned down the racial stuff, it also sounds like it lost much of the subtext as well. I suppose it will be interesting at any rate.

I will have to say, I'm liking Scarlett more and more as the book goes on. She's unconventional, rude, self-centered, etc., but she knows what she wants and she's (mostly) not afraid to get it.
Also...I wouldn't mind Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. I've been trying to also tackle that one this year and I think I need a bit more motivation! Anyone else have some ideas??
