I read these books when I was around 6-8 years old, so I'm a little short on details. I remember they took place in a city or town with extreme social stratification. There was a rich girl and a poor boy, and at one point the boy speculated that she was "probably a van der (something)" because that was the prefix of the rich peoples' last names.

The books dealt with class and had a message of your abilities matter more than your birth. I know posting so little information here is a long shot and I'm hoping I get lucky!!
